My mother is a T2 diaetic taking metformin for the last 4 years. Also in this time she had a stomach ulcer for which she was given omeprozole 20mg to take long term. She started to develop nephropathy in her feet and legs the pins/needles effect and numbness after about 2 years of taking theses medications which lead me to doing lots of research online. This research lead me to the potential depletion of B12 due to malabsorption in the blood due to the 2 drugs mentioned. Recently I took the decision to start my mother on 2000mcg daily of Methyl B12 supplements. After 3 days the pins n needles/ numbness in her feet had reduced slightly and now after 3 months is hardly noticeable. In all this time and many visits to many local doctors never once did any of these docs ever check or mention anything to do with B12 deficiency. I am very disappointed in the medical care my mother has received from the medical profession or at least the professionals we dealt with. In fact the doctors started treating mother with pregabalin which is quite a strong medicaation for the nephropathy which does help but has a multitude of other side effects which i wont go into here.
Excellent video by the way and very accurate.

I took Omeprazole for 2 months and got all sorts of issues including burning sensation all over my body and sharp pain in between shoulder blades and pain that shoots across legs feet triceps. I think it’s all b-12 related. Been off and on b-12 for a couple months and saw slight improvement. But after stopping a couple months later the symptoms came back stronger. Do you think injections of b-12 would help?

@@Caliguy1990 hi I don't know which form of B12 you were taking but I would recommend the B12 lozenges which you put under your tongue and it slowly released into the bloodstream. The problem with capsules or tablets is they have to go through your stomach and be metabolized by stomach acid which many people do not have enough of and the right amount of B12 won't reach all the cells. I've done quite a bit of research on this matter and I believe this information to be pretty accurate. The type of B12 lozenges you want to go for is the methyl B12 variant which are the non synthetic form and reach the body better.

@@sajidkhanmahmood appreciate it, did you mom ever make a full recovery? From the damage Omeprazole did?

Can you please do a video on the damage that can be done from a chronic low normal B12. I was first diagnosed with a low b12 at the age of 20. at that time i had head aches and stomach issues and had already been told i likely wasnt absorbing my nutrients when my son failed to thrieve on my breast milk. Since then I can not remember a time I was over 400 in my count and if im in the 200s im doing dreat I am often in the low 200s and with WEEKLY b12 injections after 6 weeks i tested right at 397. Dr.s dont seem at all concerned with this. I finally found a dr that tested my blood work, and i told him exactly what it would come back at, when it did he finally believed that this was an ongoing issue for me and agreed to weekely injections. after 6 weeks my score was up by only about 50 points and no he is finally wondering why my b12 stays low. I cant seem to get a dr to link my nerve damage to b12. I have struggled with a progress neurological decline, at times feeling like i was loosing my mind and starting early on set dementia, Im now dealing with wide spread spacicity and regidity, including my lungs, I am struggling with my swallowing ability now, and i describ it as the nerves just stop working, same with my digestive tract. on top of all the other typical nueropathy issues. I have broken my own foot on 2 different occassions in the spontanious falls... What kind of dr do i go see that specializes in the problems created by b12 deficiency... And why has more research not been put into this. This defiency has stollen my life because drs ignored it and didnt give it value. Its something that could have been stopped or slowed if i had had significant b12.... its frustrating. thanks in advance for the info on chronic lownormal b12

I find that only taking supplements doesn’t work that well. You should eat liver every. You can eat liver with onions and bacon or tomatoes. I know it doesn’t taste that good, but this will make it more palatable.

Hi, pernicious anaemia sufferer here. From my research on B12 deficiency, I think there are two things that could be the culprit in your case:
Firstly you may have an allergy to cobalt. B12 is called cobalamin because it is made up of the cobalt atom. If you're allergic to cobalt, then your body will do everything it can to flush the B12 out of your system. If you are allergic to cheap jewellery (nickel) then there is a good chance you are also allergic to cobalt (iron, cobalt and nickel are known as "the iron triad" because their chemical properties are so similar). If that is the case, you'll need very small amounts of B12 very regularly.
The second probable culprit is nitrous-oxide. If you work in a dentist office or maternity ward that'll be your poison. The reason that they don't (or at least didn't used to) employ young women as midwives in hospitals was because the nitrous-oxide was known to cause miscarriages. It wasn't until later that they discovered that it was because it depleted B12 levels. If this is you, you I'd recommend changing jobs.
Hope this is helpful to you. I wish you all the best in your quest for a normal life. I'm on that road myself and I know how frustrating it can be.

Ive been on and off acid blockers for yrs, recently was taking Pepcid for about 6 months and I knew the b-12 leeching effects antacids have. I had gotten lazy and slacked on taking my B-12 sublinguals, and man I feel like crap now, sore legs tingling fatigue etc

Many thanks for the Video. I am a T2 diabetic, 25 years on Metformin. Several years ago had tingling on both hands, operated one hand for carpal tunnel, no improvement. Then they said I have ulnar nerve damage on both hands and peripheral neuropathy due to diabetes and said unable to help other than keeping blood sugar levels low. Eventually, both hands became claw hands. I am still using Metformin 500mg x 4 a day. Now I suspect long term use of Metformin could have resulted in this. Any guidance of the course of actions I should follow is much appreciated. Thak you.

Hi Alex, a consultation may be of some benefit. Talking to your doctor or looking for a functional neurologist regarding B vitamin levels may be of some yield.

This is a tricky one. A lot of people (including a nurse I know) seem to think that Folate is the same as B12. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME! Folate is actually vitamin B9 and vitamin B12 is called cobalamin. In fact B9 can be toxic if you have a low B12. If your doctor has made this mistake you should probably correct him/her before taking any more advice on the subject.
Low levels of vitamin B9 (folate) can cause abnormally large red blood cells whereas low levels of Iron can cause abnormally small red blood cells. Both conditions cause the blood to carry less oxygen which can cause neuropathy in the extremities (hands and feet). Unfortunately, if you have both low B9 and low Iron it won't show up on a blood test because the size changes cancel each other out. This is known as megabolastic anaemia. If you don't have other symptoms of anaemia you'll probably be fine but keep an eye on it and research it for yourself. Doctors are smart people but they don't have more than 15 minutes to spend on each individual patient so they can't be less thorough than you might like.
