- In the movie Arrival, Ian, the scientist, points the significance of the number 0.0833... Then he says that the number 0.08333... is equal to 1/12. The number 12 was mentioned in the movie several times as an important part of the plot.
I wanted to show how to change the number 0.0833..., a repeating decimal number, into a fraction.

Since it's .00333..., with 2 zeroes after the decimal point, wouldn't multiplying by 100 instead of 10 be easier?
Another way of looking at the repeating part; since 0.3r = 1/3, then 0.003r = 1/300. Then you simply have 8/100 to add to that, which is 24/300, which equals 25/300, which simplifies down to 1/12.

Multiply both sides by 100. 12 into 100 goes 8. 96 from 100 is 4. 4/12 is .33333 so add 8. 8.333333 divided by 100 is .083333. This way you can do the math in your head.

@@sankarib9902He is attempting to express 1/12 as a percentage. So he multiplies it by 100 to make it a percentage, which is 100/12. Then, 12 goes into 100 8 times (12 x 8 = 96) which leaves a 4 remainder. That remainder is 4/12, which can be rewritten as 1/3, which we know equals 0.333...
Then add that to the 8 and we get 1/12 = 8.3r%. Which we can just express as a decimal instead of a percentage by dividing by 100, making it 0.083r. He was just showing a way of working out what 1/12 is as a decimal in your head.
1/12 = n/100. Cross multiply: 12n = 100 x 1. Divide by 12: n = 8 1/3. 8 1/3 is also 8 + 0.333... In order to get back to the original numerator (1), express as a percentage by dividing 8 1/3 by 100: (8.33...)/100 = 0.08333... Move the decimal 2 places to the left. IOW, what percentage of 1 is 1/12? 8.33...%.
Another way: n = 8 1/3, convert to percentage by dividing by 100: Since 8 1/3 = ((3 X 8)+1)/3, 8 1/3 X 1/100 = 25/3 X 1/100 = 25/300 = 1/12 = 0.08333... But that seems like a trivial answer to me, like saying 1/12 = 1/12.
