I'm glad someone's looking to help change how we can address plagiarism, especially at the collegiate level. Without any universal backlog, some people will never see consequences
this is so weird to me, like in the UK on our university application system it actually has a plagiarism checker that checks against past essays and stuff !
@@lovemorgan6690 we apply through UCAS, which is basically a submissions tool that helps with the application process.... since every person in the UK who applies to uni applies through UCAS, they’re the ones who check for plagiarism. Essentially they can see if u have plagiarised any personal statement that has ever gone through the system, so plagiarism is basically impossible.
This shows your maturity by using this experience as a teaching lesson and not exposing the person. Hopefully they get repercussions from the school and learn from their actions.
@@iLastStar it doesn’t Matter how many paragraphs but how much percent of the essay is plagiarized. If it’s only two paragraphs in a four paragraph essay that’s enough for it to count as plagiarism. You’re doing the right thing. I wish that cheating in class wasn’t so easy to get away with. Even if TAs and professors report it, the university often doesn’t do anything about it because of the tuition money. We need to make sure that college is a fair environment.
Oh my uni takes those seriously, many people have failed courses because of that and have had to go to school tribunals to be judged and what punisher be sufficient
Ask your professors and TAs, you’d be surprised. I went to UCLA, where that shit was rampant and unchecked, especially in engineering. Even in departments where proctors do report cheating, the university doesn’t always expel.
I would have reported them to the school. You know why? In school they always say, would you want a dr. practicing medicine and treating you if they cheated their way through school? Uh, that's a hard NO. Probably isn't the first time they plagiarized. I have a very black and white view on this as a future vet. I worked my ass off to get into vet school and if I knew someone got into school by cheating their way in... Ugh.
It also reminds me of all the wealthy kids (à la Donald Trump) who just paid their way in and then, later on, obtain these super prestigious jobs that they're clearly not qualified for.
Same. In uni, you are proving that you can gather data &information, form an educated opinion on it, and present it in a comprehensive way to your audience. If you aren’t harnessing those skills, then you shouldn’t be there. Universities have different programs to help you work on your weaknesses. It’s your responsibility to take advantage of what your tuition is paying for.
Plagiarism is a problem. Learn from the essay and write about ones' own experience could be a better choice. Taking away good vocabs is fine, but learn from it. Withdrawl of applications could be done to show a sign of regret...

I really like how your thoughts on plagiarism didn't concentrate on how morally wrong it is and how disrespectful it is to the original authors, which is a given, but it emphasized more on how a person who plagiarizes, even if its just a paragraph or two, is only hurting themselves more by doing it and that it's not worth it. you can take her work as an inspiration for creative writing, how she construct it, did she start with facts, opinions, or did she point out the problems in introduction, how did she use words, etc. , something like this, Not copying the entire essay and just change the objectives.
I think you should definitely report this to their college. They'll do what they think is fit, but they need to be aware of prior plagiarism. It speaks to someone's ethics as a student, even if they become better people.
Hi Chloe. I wanted to share with you that aside from English ability or time constraints, a possible catalyst for plagiarism can also be self esteem issues (idk this specific person but I’m just saying in general when people plagiarise essays). I know so many people who binge college YT videos and feel like AOs will be blasé reading your entire life story because everyone else’s seems more interesting than yours. Not to excuse plagiarism in any way, but it seems that that is a mindset issue that needs to change. I shared your visceral reaction of anger as I watched this video. Writing my common app was an emotionally exhausting difficult experience that required so much thought and soul searching. The prospect of someone using my personal work would really infuriate me, so I really respect your maturity in this video.
It’s one thing to read sample essays or a good essay and take inspiration from it. By inspiration meaning like how to sound formal, maybe a word choice, adjective, etc. and maybe try to implement something similar into your essay because that is a way you can improve your writing. But it’s another thing to just blatantly plagiarize, and change like one or two sentences. I think there’s a fine line between taking inspiration from a piece of work and plagiarism.
Speaking of not being able to identify olagiarism... I worked organizing an art project that require all the members to do research and write like a mini-essay on the subject they choose for their art piece that everyone would send me so I could format it and edited to make it a cohesive document and almost everyone (except for one) sent me a copy-paste of an article they found on their subject. I introduce the text of the first mini-essay to a "plagarism detector" online and it said that it wasn't plagiarized, but when I googled the first paragraph I found the blog it was taken from in the first result... HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN??? Also, we are all in university, so I don't even understand why they thought it was ok to plagiarize in first place :)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
I admire that you chose not to disclose that person's identity, which is something I would do otherwise. The reason being is that I was a victim of plagiarism at one of my classes for my master's. A classmate of mine, asked to read one of my essay assignments before the due date. Without much thinking, also because I was still revising it, I handed them the hard-copy version with my revision notes on. One week after the due date, I was accused of being plagiarism, as the professor received two almost identical essays. However, they chose to believe that I was the one who plagiarized, because that person who had read my work was a US citizen who were born and raised in the US with English being their first and only language, whereas, I'm from a non-English speaking country. Basically, the committee members just didn't believe that a non-native English speaker can have a better grasp of the English language than that of a native speaker, hence, it had to be that I had copied their essay. After a tedious and time-consuming process of submitting evidence, the committee finally believed me. However, they chose and asked me keep silent about this "mishap", as I'm quoting the word used by them, and didn't reprimand that person in any shape or form. I'm talking about no failing for that class or suspension or warning letter. The only they received that was remotely a punishment was zero points for that assignment he plagiarized. That's why I abhor and loathe people who commit or committed such an act. Also that's why I would personally choose to disclose their identity, if it were up to me.
If this was the college i enrolled in, this guy wouldve been caught right away and get expelled immediately. How does this college not check for plagiarism?? Plagiarism in college application essays is probably nothing new already for the past 50 years, I'm sure! College admissions officers should install a machine designed to detect similarities in millions of essays that are submitted every year and catch offenders easily!! Perhaps make the applicants sign honor pledges that they didn't cheat with anything on their applications? And even if they cheated, then they would easily fail out of the schools naturally!!!
My University has that, it's called Blackboard, and it analyzes everything, from phrasing to checking if we have the right references cited. In addition, we have to sign an affidavit stating we did not plagiarize and the work submitted is ours. The percent allowed for similarities may differ from faculty to faculty (mine allowed 20%). But even so, more often than not, the comission in charge of evaluations turns a blind eye when the % is surpassed, because having a big number of graduates = more funding.
For anyone who doesn't know 5 consecutive words copied from someone else (unless it's a quote, listing something, or any other instance that would make sense) is considered plagiarism. This person was out here copying entire sentences, word for word.
@Rara Si The sentence, "Yet I knew I needed to veer away from aggression to be a good" is 14 consecutive copied words (8 consecutive copied words if you're not including I, and, to, a, etc.). Anything more than 5 is plagiarism, and the other similarities are just too much for it to be a coincidence. 😬
Plagiarism feels like a crime. Id be furious if i found out someone copied my pieces. And thats why i quit cheating on anything in general. The difficult way is the only way.
Girl tell me why youtubers are over here abusing the little guy... my most recent vid is abt another situation where one took advantage of my work. Just embarrassing for them 🤦🏻♀️
not to justify his actions AT ALL... but I think this is part of the reason why students should be very apprehensive about posting their college essays to schools they have been accepted (especially well known and sought after schools like UChicago). I’m currently starting my grad school program at UChicago and would be so hurt if my own stories and experiences were taken by someone else. Obviously you can do what you would like on the internet, but I think this is a great example of why sharing admissions essays may not always be smart. Another option is explaining the content of your work without sharing the actual wording and text. Anyways, I hope that kid is denied from every school he applied to because he deserves it!
That’s horrible. There’s consequences if a university catches someone plagiarizing, but they give little protection or policies for those whose works have been plagiarized.
Based on the content of the channel being named in these comments paired with them giving permission for it to be discussed on this channel, it sounds like they were hoping to get viewers from your platform and potentially get named on drama channels for views
@@cindytrinh5337 You're right. I figured out that Oscar plagiarized her work and got caught so he wrote an apology email. Arpi Park also got caught and wrote an apology on Reddit.
don't worry Chloe! I was having a sorta conversation with an admission officer from Stanford University and just like anything else, asked him a couple of personal questions like how do you make sure that the potential candidate hasn't like stolen the whole essay and like how do you figure out that the student got a significant amount of help from his supervisors or else. They told me that they use several apps and online exclusive paid platforms and custom created AI machines to detect plagiarism in the essays, which basically means that the admission officers are safe from scammer's lies.
Yeah. I'm kind of annoyed at Chloe that she accepted his apology, because it was clear to me halfway through that it was not a genuine apology for the unethical act of plagiarism he committed. If it were an apology, he would have directly accepted that he stole her words and tried to pass them off as his own. He would not have said he has no idea "how and why" his essay sounds exactly like hers. That is NOT an apology for plagiarism, that is an apology for getting caught.
@@michaelw7327 Do you not understand the analogy or what? "He's only sorry he got caught." In other words, he doesn't actually care that he plagiarized. He only apologized to save face, not because he actually meant it.

I hate this happened to you. As a student, I have looked at papers written by others for inspiration. Sometimes you see different points of view or even just a great way to get your own point across. Those papers have been extremely helpful with my brainstorming for a paper. To that point, I have cited dissertations by doctoral students in my own work, but that includes using ONE sentence and giving credit. To copy your entire paper (and not just facts from a book, your actual experiences) is unacceptable.

I forgot the exact wording, but if only this many words are allowed to be the same, wouldn’t someone be bound to have the same paragraph as someone else one day just by chance?
yep, I haven’t heard anyone get punished in that circumstance yet but that’s why it’s always good to use one or more plagiarism checkers after you’ve finished writing your essay, so that you don’t have to get into that potentially complicated situation

I never thought of copying or plagiarizing but I am very thankful for the reminder. I always feel down and tired that sometimes I break down even because I am so stressed about the applications. I am proud of myself because I am almost through it and I hope everyone who has been feeling this way feels better and enjoys the sweet results of their labor. Stay safe guys!!!
Keep working hard! It can be stressful, but at least you know that your accomplishments are because of your own hard work and not someone else's!

What the actual hell - I swear to god college apps reveals all the evil in people 😔

I feel like all college apps have similar language so this wouldn’t be effective.
Man and it just took my freshmen highschool professor like 2 minutes to run my essay through turn it in and check if it was plagerized ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
For anyone who doesn't know 5 consecutive words copied from someone else (unless it's a quote, listing something, or any other instance that would make sense) is considered plagiarism. This person was out here copying entire sentences, word for word.
@Rara Si
The sentence, "Yet I knew I needed to veer away from aggression to be a good" is 14 consecutive copied words (8 consecutive copied words if you're not including I, and, to, a, etc.). Anything more than 5 is plagiarism, and the other similarities are just too much for it to be a coincidence. 😬

not to justify his actions AT ALL... but I think this is part of the reason why students should be very apprehensive about posting their college essays to schools they have been accepted (especially well known and sought after schools like UChicago).
