Just the sort of price for a ready-to-run model I'd be willing to pay. Mate, I'm not being harsh with you here. I don't know what it is from Hornby you want to see, but that is a stunning Standard 2MT model you have there. She ticks all of the boxes, she runs smoothly (OK, she did stick somewhat but that's easily forgivable) and her motor is slightly noisy. Hornby have, for once, got quality and price on par with each other. I can clearly see it. If I had the space, I'd happily add this stunning little Hornby beauty to my collection.

I'm actually a fan of the gearing. I find a lot of older locos run WAY too fast, and sacrifice low speed controllability. So many models will run at a scale speed of 150mph, especially when the loco itself would do 60-70mph flat out. A low ratio gear box allows better pulling power too.

Great review! I don’t think this model is bad at all. It looks great, and seems to run well! It’s a pity about the gearing, lack of firebox glow, and the brake rigging and water scoop not coming pre-fitted, but all in all, it’s a good model, and definitely one I can see myself picking up, as I’ve always liked the standard 2, and it’s great that there is finally a ready to run model of it! I do think the price (as usual with Hornby these days) is a bit too high though. This is a relatively small loco, and it doesn’t have that many flashy features, so probably £140-150 would have been a better price, but that’s just my opinion. Overall, can’t wait for the BR Green version to come out, and I might pick up a BR Early Crest Black one too!!

One of the problems with having all the parts fitted during manufacture is that they can easily be damaged when removing the locos from their clamshell packaging they also fall off easily in use because for the most part they are simply an interference fit. To me this looks to be a very nice loco, I'm afraid the production of a new tool is incredibly expensive and Hornby have to weigh this against prospective sales hence the price. In the end if you want new tooling with more and more detail then you have to expect prices to be high.

About the gearing. This is a mainly a branch line engine and the operation speed should be lower than on a mainline loco, besides the slower gearing means a far better control on slower speeds, branch line engines had to do all jobs, not just hauling passengers or freight on the line but do most of, if not all shunting along its way. Only thing I hang up on it is the ungainly gap between the cab and tender, this was cleverly solved on Rocos steam engines back in the early 1980,s and they run well without derailing on normal tighter trainset curves.
Hi Ollie I hope you are well Yes maybe your are right. Both this and my replacement got warm. But I know what you are saying Thank you for the kind words and watching and commenting Keep safe ARP

I have Italian and German engines that run half the speed, at full throttle, of UK models running half throttle... Some of the hand rails look wonky, too. I’ll stick with my excellent Bachmann 2MT’s.

Hi h I hope you are well Yes am very disappointed with the model it also has no talk when I hold it back Thank you for the kind words and watching and commenting Keep safe ARP
Thanks for making this video, was very informative and interesting,... Hornby has had many new products using this type of motor and many are not preforming as they should, if the motor is getting hot, running as slow as your train of wagons, then this is just not good enough, my old X04 fitted locos would run at full speed all day without braking a sweat, my local model shop had a window layout running all day long without a hitch...I'm thinking they would run better on DCC, or maybe thats what the manufactures want, Dapol N gauge simply do not run on DC, fit a decoder and..run perfectly..funny that..
Hi Paul I hope you are well At full speed it not much faster Am replacement one came and it got hot and speeding up and down by it self too so I've asked for a refund now. To be fair it not much more detailed than Bachmann class 2 in my opinion and that was 2008 ish when it came out. Thank you for the kind words and watching and commenting Keep safe ARP
Super looking loco with great detail. I thought that was a smooth take-off, and no jittering at all. If I had it, I’d run it close-coupled with the tender. So what is it that is disappointing you Adi?
Hi mate I hope you are well. I should be grateful for the model but the long wait and no firebox glow and alot to add your self Is see high on the controller too Could just be me Thank you for the kind words and watching and commenting Keep safe ARP
Looks a nice engine tbh, price is high, but they all are now, fit DCC and it will preform much better, the motors are weak now compared with older models...
Hi Paul I hope you are well I think I was expecting more from it Am on my 2nd model now and it getting warm when running Thank you for the kind words and watching and commenting Keep safe ARP
£200 does not seem a bad price, a lot locos from Europe or the US cost a lot more than that. The UK is just catching up with the rest of the world in prices. Size also does not dictate cost, it is the tooling cost, all of which have to be paid in US$ so depends upon exchange rates. Why a flickering firebox, can not see it if the doors a closed.
Hi Andrew I hope you are well It high in my opinion for a 4-4-0 model. I understand Europe and North America models cost hell of alot more I guess you could be right The flickering firebox is a gimmicks in my opinion Keep safe ARP
A good honest review. Given Hornby's experience, the price and the time the 2MT has taken to come to market it could and should be better than this. I'd have expected a diecast body, firebox flicker and working lights plus most of the detail parts already fitted for ~£200 RRP. It is quite a small loco after all. Does yours have a weak or faulty motor as Hornby are rather hit-and-miss with the quality of their motors? Best to only buy locos from retailers that test them first, at least that gives you a reasonable chance of avoiding being landed with a poor runner.
Hi Paul I hope you are well I should be grateful I have I model it very much a 1st world issue Sad I know. I was at least expecting firebox glow Only issue I've had with hornby motor was h class on it 4th. I may have to a comparison video with my Backman ivatt class 2mt Thank you for the kind words and watching and commenting Keep safe ARP
Hi Adi I am sorry that after a 3 year wait you were disappointed with her but a nice video all the same and good that you have a new shop for your purchases. Cheers for the shoutout its very kind of you so until your next one and I have a new video on Thursday as will be at GETS on the Saturday looking forward to it keep well Cheers Robert.

Good review mate. Model is really well detailed shame it doesn't tick all the boxes for me , a bit on the pricey side considering it doesn't have all the things you would expect from a model of this price. Unless the price comes down to a more realistic price then I will stick with my 1970s ivatt 2mt.
Hi Gordon I hope you are well. Yes very pricey and lacking of features When other Mogul are 160 max I believe Bachmann ivatt class is 140 ok it 15 years old but it has the same features as this model by hornby Thank you for the kind words and watching and commenting Keep safe ARP
Hi Adi, a great review and Video, sorry to hear that your not impressed with this model and again I think that the long wait you expected more for your money. Looking at the detail on most models these days I find very impressive so much so that I think it could put the kit builders out of business ! What do you think ? Stay safe, Regards from Ron 🚂👍🚂😃🚂
Hi Ron I hope you are well Yes I think it was delay that made me expected more to the model Am sure they could of easily but a glow in the cab. I think that trouble when models this day and age we expect more on a model Thank you for the kind words and watching and commenting Keep safe ARP
Hi Adi. Sorry that you are a little disappointed by this model, it does look nicely detailed though is lacking in some of the features of today's models. The price is way off compared to the competition, I think £160 would have been better. It would be interesting to see what motor is used and how it will perform over time. Good honest review, all the best. Cheers Rob.
Hi Robin I hope you are well Yes don't get me wrong it look fantastic the running is hard it could be correct and am just used to faster models The price is high compared to other Mogul dapol 43xx is around 150 I was also disappointed at no water scoop and brake rigging should of been added Thank you for the kind words and watching and commenting Keep safe ARP
Over 200 quid for a small mogul is stupid money. All the manufacturer's are too greedy and they are killing the hobby. The manufacturer's greed is filtering down to the second-hand market too as on a certain auction site sellers are asking more money for older models than they actually bought them for. Hawick is pronounced Hoik by the way.
Hi David I hope you are well Sadly I have brain damage and struggle to read word sorry if I said it wrong. Yes for £200 it a let down. Even the replacement one had issues so I when for a refund Thank you for the kind words and watching and commenting Keep safe ARP
Don't you need to run it in for a few hours before it will run slow? I think that will make a difference so before you get dissapointed, try a run in session each way. 👍 Non of these are perfect out of the box. Happy Modelling.
The water scoop is not fitted because they were not fitted to all of the class in service, I have 2 of these models and on DCC the running is very smooth indeed and they do not get worm. Not sure why some modellers get hung up on flicking firebox’s etc etc and it really is insignificant that this model is 3 years late!!! This has no effect on its outcome Hornby will have been working on numerous projects and trying to get them to a point of approval for manufacturing. Price comparison between manufacturers is very dangerous and the materials used are not the same in many cases. Also I am a little confused with the many comments about the Bachmann Ivatt being a better model??? It’s an inaccurate model with an inaccurate running plate, motion, chimney and wheel centres. Good honest review though.
Nice model but, according to Hornby, they **don't** have any spares so as so many arrived thrown together loosely and damaged badly ... TOUGH!! Then when you complain..."Oh well you can send it in to us if you wish"... Er..Er..Hornby are you totally stucking fupid..?? If you haven't got simple repair spairs then what's the pucking foint because they wouldn't be able to repair any faulty models. Perhaps it was just the pillock I was talking to *GRRRR*. Some of them are very good but some just don't want to help. Who's paying their wages..?? I bought three and all were damaged and needed fixing, one replacement was worse than the original!! If Bachmann were to produce an upgraded 2MT then it would win hands down based on their present quality of model. All Hornby are interested in are their shareholders..No More Hornby, ever! Loose and badly adjusted wheels, crap wire, brittle plastic, damaged linkage, broken bogie, badly serviced!! Don't rely on Hornby for any help just return the crap to the retailer!!
Hi Adi, I waited for the carpet review of Sam's trains of this 2MT before commenting on your review and with all respect I find you a bit harsh with your conclusions except for the to high price. The model is stunning and compared with the Old Bachmann it's way more detailed and a far a better runner for it also has the standard all wheel pick ups. My Bachmann 2MT is a very bad runner stalling on all points in forward but not in reverse.(??) I love the Hornby gearing for the slow speed is exemplary and who needs rocket trains ? It's also a good puller and a long train is not a problem. Motor noise can be amplified by the type of the support the rails are on. In your case a plain tabletop without roadbed is not improving things - even for the wheel noise. Also consider that Chinees Made motors are not the best in the world and you have to test 10 to find 1 descent. I don't mind firebox glow and all these gadgets that make modern models more expensive but not better. Ease of maintenance, nice detailing, quality and good running & pulling performance are on top of my list and this locomotive ticks all the boxes. The price though is way to high. But then again you will never find a comparable EU steam locomotive even for that price. Consider yourselves lucky in the UK regarding train hobby prices compared to the EU !! Success & thanks for sharing this review. Cheers, Filip
Hi filip I hope you are well Yes I understand Sam's trains is no1 review I truly get that. I've had 2 now both got super hot running so I got a refund Yes I fully respect your opinion. My ivatt 2 is great runner. Thank you for the comment A review is only someone opinion I was really looking forward to it. Keep safe ARP
I disagree with you. I think it is far from disappointing. I think the gearing is quite right for the model since it wasn't expected to do 100 mph but could still put in a turn of speed when necessary. They were also powerful taking up to 9 coaches (OK not fully laden) up some serious banks, which you would expect a class 3 or 4 to do. I will await a second hand model or an offer later, but £200 is the cost of current locomotives, which not that long ago would have been £120-150, but that is the cost of inflation.
Hi don I hope you are well Yes am glad you disagree with me and my opinion I had a replacement that got hot running so I've had my money back. A review is only someone opinion at the the end of the day Thank you for the comment and watching Keep safe ARP
Anyone who buys new locos is a fool .they are too expensive ...too delicate...not very reliable and nearly always a disappointment. Since the dcc sound models came in it just got worse. I run my locos and layout like a real railroad .i like operating them .i dont want the sound of eggs frying birds tweeting whistles blowing and doors slamming .i want detail to a good level .decent reliable running motor and reasonable price. Stop buying and the prices will fall .hornby buy the cheapest chinese motors this is why they are inconsistant runners. And china laugh all the way to the bank .dontbuy them .
Horbny are going downhill again, all the good work that Simom Kholer did to put the company back on it's feet is been blown away by the current way overpriced lacklustre models. I always wait until the prices drop, if buyers are prepared to pay the RRP that is their choice. Bachmann loco's have been better than Hornby for a few decades, and i can't see this changing. These new overpriced models are going to put off any new entrants to the hobby, not everyone are paid enough to start a layout.
Hi Barbara I hope you are well Yes hornby had 3 years to get this model perfect If they kept the price around 170 I would not be too bad It looks a great model People say it runs smoothly I hate saying anything bad but am disappointed alot Thank you for the kind words and watching and commenting Keep safe ARP
I am fine thanks, i hate leaving negative comments but Hornby are going downhill at an ever increasing rate. Releasing sub standard over priced models is a recipe for a disaster. I started my collection in the late 60's and have watched over the years how much more detailed the models are, but the prices are now off the scale. The ones from the eary 90's are detailed enough and back then cost well below £100 even allowing for inflation the manufacturing costs of them is a fraction of the retail price. Most model shops work on a 100% markup, so that £170 model cost them £85 a lot less for the larger retailers like Hattons that buy in bulk at large discounts. Food for thought!@@AdiPullen

Not to nit pick, but it's not an Ivatt 2. It's a standard 2, ivatts have a small dome just behind the chimney, and a few other differences besides.

Hi Paul
I hope you are well
At full speed it not much faster
Am replacement one came and it got hot and speeding up and down by it self too so I've asked for a refund now.
To be fair it not much more detailed than Bachmann class 2 in my opinion and that was 2008 ish when it came out.

Super looking loco with great detail. I thought that was a smooth take-off, and no jittering at all. If I had it, I’d run it close-coupled with the tender. So what is it that is disappointing you Adi?
Hi mate
I hope you are well.
I should be grateful for the model but the long wait and no firebox glow and alot to add your self
Is see high on the controller too

Looks a nice engine tbh, price is high, but they all are now, fit DCC and it will preform much better, the motors are weak now compared with older models...
Hi Paul
I hope you are well
I think I was expecting more from it
Am on my 2nd model now and it getting warm when running

£200 does not seem a bad price, a lot locos from Europe or the US cost a lot more than that. The UK is just catching up with the rest of the world in prices. Size also does not dictate cost, it is the tooling cost, all of which have to be paid in US$ so depends upon exchange rates. Why a flickering firebox, can not see it if the doors a closed.
Hi Andrew
I hope you are well
It high in my opinion for a 4-4-0 model.
I understand Europe and North America models cost hell of alot more
I guess you could be right
The flickering firebox is a gimmicks in my opinion

A good honest review. Given Hornby's experience, the price and the time the 2MT has taken to come to market it could and should be better than this. I'd have expected a diecast body, firebox flicker and working lights plus most of the detail parts already fitted for ~£200 RRP. It is quite a small loco after all. Does yours have a weak or faulty motor as Hornby are rather hit-and-miss with the quality of their motors? Best to only buy locos from retailers that test them first, at least that gives you a reasonable chance of avoiding being landed with a poor runner.
Hi Paul
I hope you are well
I should be grateful I have I model it very much a 1st world issue
Sad I know.
I was at least expecting firebox glow
Only issue I've had with hornby motor was h class on it 4th.
I may have to a comparison video with my Backman ivatt class 2mt

Hi Adi
I am sorry that after a 3 year wait you were disappointed with her but a nice video all the same and good that you have a new shop for your purchases.
Cheers for the shoutout its very kind of you so until your next one and I have a new video on Thursday as will be at GETS on the Saturday looking forward to it keep well
Cheers Robert.

Good review mate. Model is really well detailed shame it doesn't tick all the boxes for me , a bit on the pricey side considering it doesn't have all the things you would expect from a model of this price. Unless the price comes down to a more realistic price then I will stick with my 1970s ivatt 2mt.
Hi Gordon
I hope you are well. Yes very pricey and lacking of features
When other Mogul are 160 max I believe Bachmann ivatt class is 140 ok it 15 years old but it has the same features as this model by hornby
Thank you for the kind words and watching and commenting

It does have a die-cast boiler, what about the running board?
I don't think so
Hi Adi, a great review and Video, sorry to hear that your not impressed with this model and again I think that the long wait you expected more for your money. Looking at the detail on most models these days I find very impressive so much so that I think it could put the kit builders out of business ! What do you think ? Stay safe, Regards from Ron 🚂👍🚂😃🚂
Hi Ron
I hope you are well
Yes I think it was delay that made me expected more to the model
Am sure they could of easily but a glow in the cab.
I think that trouble when models this day and age we expect more on a model

Hi Adi.
Sorry that you are a little disappointed by this model, it does look nicely detailed though is lacking in some of the features of today's models. The price is way off compared to the competition, I think £160 would have been better. It would be interesting to see what motor is used and how it will perform over time.
Good honest review, all the best. Cheers Rob.
Hi Robin
I hope you are well
Yes don't get me wrong it look fantastic the running is hard it could be correct and am just used to faster models
The price is high compared to other Mogul dapol 43xx is around 150
I was also disappointed at no water scoop and brake rigging should of been added

Hi David
I hope you are well
Sadly I have brain damage and struggle to read word sorry if I said it wrong.

Don't you need to run it in for a few hours before it will run slow?
I think that will make a difference so before you get dissapointed, try a run in session each way. 👍
Non of these are perfect out of the box.
Happy Modelling.
I ran it for 3 hours before recording
@@AdiPullen OK.

Great loco ,can’t really see your problem .except price .

@@AdiPullen Thanks . I also found that alot of new stock Hornby are mostly faulty
@@Tauraco00 yes I got this model replaced and them replacement had issues too so got a refund in the end
@@AdiPullen yes agreed something aint right..will stick to older working models🥶
Am just disappointed in the model had 2 both had issues
So got a refund and brought a 2nd hand ex lms Stanier 4p
Hi filip
I hope you are well
Yes I understand Sam's trains is no1 review I truly get that.

Yes I fully respect your opinion.
My ivatt 2 is great runner.

Hi don
I hope you are well

Pardon
Anyone who buys new locos is a fool .they are too expensive ...too delicate...not very reliable and nearly always a disappointment. Since the dcc sound models came in it just got worse. I run my locos and layout like a real railroad .i like operating them .i dont want the sound of eggs frying birds tweeting whistles blowing and doors slamming .i want detail to a good level .decent reliable running motor and reasonable price. Stop buying and the prices will fall .hornby buy the cheapest chinese motors this is why they are inconsistant runners. And china laugh all the way to the bank .dontbuy them .
I just run for fun
Horbny are going downhill again, all the good work that Simom Kholer did to put the company
back on it's feet is been blown away by the current way overpriced lacklustre models.
I always wait until the prices drop, if buyers are prepared to pay the RRP that is their choice.
Bachmann loco's have been better than Hornby for a few decades, and i can't see this changing.
These new overpriced models are going to put off any new entrants to the hobby, not everyone
are paid enough to start a layout.
Hi Barbara
I hope you are well
Yes hornby had 3 years to get this model perfect
If they kept the price around 170 I would not be too bad

I am fine thanks, i hate leaving negative comments but Hornby are going downhill at an ever
increasing rate.
Releasing sub standard over priced models is a recipe for a disaster.
I started my collection in the late 60's and have watched over the years how much more detailed
the models are, but the prices are now off the scale.
The ones from the eary 90's are detailed enough and back then cost well below £100
even allowing for inflation the manufacturing costs of them is a fraction of the retail price.
Most model shops work on a 100% markup, so that £170 model cost them £85
a lot less for the larger retailers like Hattons that buy in bulk at large discounts.
Food for thought!@@AdiPullen
