Building Beautiful Monsters in Mexico

  • All across Mexico, fantastical creatures can be found dotting the streets, covered in bright colors, giant wings, bulging eyes and viper tongues. These are alebrijes, papier-mâché creations that have become a staple of Mexican folk art. But how did these beautiful monsters come to be? That’s all thanks to one man with a dream. As history has it, after falling into an unconscious state, Pedro Linares dreamed up a series of horrific creatures. Upon waking, he created his first sculpture. Today, his family continues to carry on the tradition of monster-making, keeping Pedro’s visions alive.

Instead of pessimistically focusing of the loss of someone during death, they optimistically focus on the transition to a new and better afterlife.

The just need to highlight that the best alebrijes are made in Oaxaca, it's a state 5 hours away from Mexico City, in the South of the country.

The alebrijes in Oaxaca are made of wood, whereas the original papier-mâché ones as well as the alebrijes monumentales are from Mexico City.

Los alebrijes de Oaxaca son de madera y su forma es muy realista ; los de Mexico City son mas creativos , son hechos de papel mache y por supuesto son los originales !😎

Big and well deserved kudos to the narrator who had a wonderful pronunciation over Alebrije. For an instant i thought it was going to be that lady mispronouncing everything that's not an english word saying ei-leigh-brie-jey but nope, it was wonderful =)

This video confused me. Were the alebrijes a preexisting Mexican idea, or did the artist's grandfather create the concept of the alebrijes, and their depiction? If his grandfather created the creatures, then how is this 'folk art'?
