      @@23SSG no, I didn't have any issues with Gimp (other than learning how it is different that Photoshop). It seemed to work pretty smoothly for me. Of course, updates and processing speeds can have a lot to do with how a program handles as well. If it keep crashing, I would look into what requirements the program needs to work. Good luck!!

    Bravo! Very cool project! I hope do use this technique for my home theater in the future.
    One tip for any beginners to woodworking is to assemble the frames with the holes for the pocket screws on the outside of the box, rather than the inside (as is shown at 6:00 in this video). The reason is to allow those pocket screws more material to bite into. For this project it does not make much difference, but if one was building a bookshelf or cabinet, the screws might tear through the wood and the joint could fail.

    Love it.. thanks for the detailed explanation. Functional & looks great. I recently visited a friends home theater & he had several movie posters in glass around the room & all i could see was the reflection of light from his screen on the glass of the poster. I had one framed with this expensive glass that is supposed to be anti-glare (i.e. see through) but in a dark room i could see a reflection so I never hung it on the wall (and spent more than what you did for all 5 panels). This is my next project for my theater room!!!!!

    • @LifeofBliss
      @LifeofBliss  5 років тому +1

      Ah man that sucks about the reflections you got. These things are so cool looking and zero reflection! Granted I wouldn't put a mostly white print near the front screen area cause you'd still see some light from that... good luck man! Check out the forum for more help on them too.

    You'll get better sound absorption by using thinner pieces of rockwool and having a small air gap in between. Use scrap pieces of rockwool or strips of lumber to hold the sheets of rockwool apart. Glue them in place. I suppose you could also use bubble wrap to create the gap too. I might try that route myself if I make a panel.

    I liked this video quite a bit! My build is quite similar to yours. Once I get my Volts on the back wall I am going to look at acoustic treatments for the rear. I'm not sure I want to do movie posters yet... but they look great in your space.

    • @LifeofBliss
      @LifeofBliss  5 років тому +1

      Thanks man, definitely filled in some wall space and made it more finished looking. And helps with sound, so win win. And yea you can do the same thing with a solid color fabric of choice if you didn't want movie posters, would be a lot easier. Just make sure the fabric is fairly thin and transparent for sound!

    Well, I built some of these but did a few things differently and I am still waiting on my print outs to show up so I can complete them. I converted my upstairs game room into a media room a while back by adding a door and closing in a 9'x4' opening that looked out over the stairs. That room also has 4 - 34"x58" windows and I needed to close them in somehow but I don't like blinds (don't block enough light) and I don't like curtains. So a friend sent me your video and this is exactly what I needed. I built out acoustic panels per your design with the idea that I would inset those into the window frames. I have that part done. I put white cloth backing on the back and used the same insulation as you accept the outside has the reflective radiant barrier on it to help block any additional heat coming in from those windows. Those windows are on the side of the house and not visible from any angle really unless you are in my side yard so that is good. Once I get my print outs I will cover the boxes and then I plan to cut some trim to fit around the outside edges as a frame to make these look more like poster boxes. That will seal out the remaining light that is coming in on the edges and will completely block the light for my media room.

    • @avikamath9676
      @avikamath9676 3 роки тому

      I am trying to do the same to block the light from my windows in the media room. What reflective barrier did you use for the back?

  • @Marzen216
    @Marzen216 5 років тому

    I love mine, they're the first thing people notice when they walk in. Don't forget to add a 'cloud' or two to the ceiling to reduce that 1st reflection point and improve the front sound stage imaging even more. Can't wait to see your REW analysis. All I have left to do is some bass management; and then start over upgrading hardware...lol

    • @LifeofBliss
      @LifeofBliss  5 років тому

      I might add a cloud, not sure yet. But I will get a video out at some point on the difference these made

    pretty cool idea and I am happy to see you using GIMP but just a hint to that, resize the canvas then you can center the poster with the function and when you add then the new layer there are two options first you can decide if it gets under or above the current activated layer, choose under and another option allows you to create it with the for-/background color so when you have black as this one just use it saves another working step

  • @nickbuol
    @nickbuol 5 років тому +2

    Hey, just checking in. Great video Kyle! I've always said on the forums that anyone can do these. There are always a few extra steps for things like images with white backgrounds, ones with black edges to the image and hot to align those when the border is also black, verifying image quality (can't always trust the internet image sites as most of those are already enlarged, but some are better than others, and how to handle that dream image that doesn't look up to snuff before printing). Those are more of the exception than the rule and people can head over to that forum link in your description to ask for more specific help, but this should work spot on for almost everyone. Again, great video, and everyone else in the comments, go make some panels!

    Hey man. A couple years ago I used your video to create movie posters for my theater room and they came out amazing!! I am doing a golf simulator room now and would like to do the same thing with High Resolution images of golf courses and a few golfers. I am having trouble in Gimp with my pictures I guess because they are long not tall....... Any help would be much appreciated.

      I think because the High Res images I downloaded arent 2500x 4000.... Any ideas where I could find some without paying a lot from somewhere like shutterstock? Thanks in advance.

    This is a great video. Looking at the example picture that you pulled in, the pixels per inch are 300. Did you scale it from 72 to 300 prior to the video? I think that is an important step to possibly add to your video. Thanks for the help!

    • @LifeofBliss
      @LifeofBliss  4 роки тому

      I didnt do anything to the image before editing it... if it didn't change automatically, I adjusted it, but I should have gone over every step... regardless, you are correct, the DPI should be between 150 and 300 to get the right resolution for printing 👍

  • @kinetic1259

    Given how much carpet, plush couches, cushions, curtains and sound-absorbing posters you have in that room, there seems to be quite a lot of echo on your mic input. Did you add additional reverb for the video?

  • @bikonor

    FYI you need to change dpi before u change dimentions when you are rescaling in gimp, or you will get wrong dimentions(like i had for the first attempts).

    Hey Kyle, and anyone else making these. Someone posted that there was a way to center the image and add the black border, without having to make a new layer. He didn't go into detail how to do it, but I figured it out. After you scale the image, and fit image to window, click on Image/ Canvas Size. Change to inches, and make it 33x48. Change offset to inches, and click Center. Change Resize Layers to All Visible Layers, and Fill With to Background Color. This step drove me crazy, but I figured it out. The Bucket Fill color that says Active background color, needs to be Black. It was white, and kept filling the background to White. Click Resize, and you'll have the poster all ready, with the black border. Then just rotate 90 degrees to upload it for printing.

  • @cr0ft-2k
    @cr0ft-2k 5 років тому

    Great looking panels, but there's an insufficient quantity of them. Maybe do some that are just plain and can vanish into the room, sort of. Also, consider what need there is for bass traps, like in the corners. There are acoustic room mode calculators on the web to help figure out how much treatment is needed and what kind to get the most out of a home theater or audio room.

    • @LifeofBliss
      @LifeofBliss  5 років тому

      I may do more down the road. But this is not a dedicated area, so was trying to make functional decorations without going overboard. Many walls won't have any treatments

    Thanks for this amazing tutorial! I have a question - what size should the frames be? I have followed your tutorial step by step so should I make the frames the same size as yours or does it depend on the measurement of the image on the fabric?

    • @LifeofBliss
      @LifeofBliss  2 роки тому

      The frames will be the same dimensions as your final image size. For example, if you made your image size 24"x48", the outer dimensions of your frame should be 24"x48"

    • @LifeofBliss
      @LifeofBliss  5 років тому

      Really just depends on the image quality. There are some things you can do with editing software sharpen them if the quality is lower, but I don't know much about that process. If you use that site for the movie posters, I think you have some room to increase the size a bit more without losing much quality.
