I'm a social democrat politically, but I detest socialism. Argentina has been long overdue for an economic change, but truthfully most of South America is too.
They're still a long way away from that tho... They have been economically mismanaged for so long that they are still basically stuck in the 90s. Both the government and the central bank really f...ed things up. The corruption, bloated state aparatus and inefficient industrial sector are all huge problems. They have one big advantage tho - their population is fairly educated (at least compared to the region). They need to implement major political, economic, and societal changes so that they could ever reach their potential.

More important than anything else is how he handles corruption. Efforts to minimise corruption must be constant. If you do not do that, then any other measures will just be eaten by corrupt officials. We will see.
Being recently back from Argentina I'd say that it is actually one of the problems that most South American countries have that they don't... I'm an Economist and I can't understand how Argentina was able to get into such a deep hole. Like it would have been more sane to leave a monkey to make the financial decisions in this country for the last century and they would've most likely been a south American juggernaut and with probably triple the population!

Let's say that the amount of corruption for 2 hypothetical nations with the same GDP is 10%; however, "Libertarianstan" has a government that eats just 10 billions of dollars of the GDP, while "Socialistan" eats 100 billions. Therefore, if for both the amount is the same 10% of corruption, than it follows that "Socialistan" will have 10 billions drained through corruption, while "Libertarianstan" will only have 1 billion drained. The more power you give to the State, the more corruption. It's a simple matter of math. Also, the more laws a country has, the more corruption it has, because there will be more reasons to circumvent those. And more incentives to get close to the agents of power. It's not by coincidence that socialist countries are rotten to the core with corruption.
Im Czech, I can say that the change from dictatorship to capitalism was stunning. In 30 years we have higher purchasing power than Italy or Spain. I hope for people in Argentina the same sucess.
One of my exgirlfriends family were Czechs that fled the Bolshevik take over during WWII... Her grandparents always said "had we know what would follow the German occupation the Czechs would have fought to the death along side the Germans"! That was heavy to me! That made me really start digging deep into 1900's "history" and not just listening to the western media made documentaries who defended and covered up the horrifying crimes of the Bolsheviks!

I always get pissed when people say he "devalued the Peso" He didn't really devalue as much as in was being honest with the actual value of the currency and move it closer to the black market price (which is the one common folk use since nobody could access dollars at the state sanctioned price there was before). To put things in perspective the official state sanctioned price was 1 dollar equalled 370 pesos, while the black market was trading between 900 to 1000 pesos per dollar. Milei moved it to 800 and that still falls short of the real price 😂

As an Argentinian myself I can ABSOLUTELY say you are right, the peso never was as close to the dollar as they said officially, prices always were 3, 4, or even 5 times the amount the official peso was. Plus if you wanted to buy dollars they would apply so many taxes that the difference between that and the black market one was next to invisible. Milei did the right thing in putting a more honest number to the peso, mostly because it did nothing to change negatively the prices right after, we all knew the real value and now is closer to what it is. That is just being honest with your people.
@@farenhaid13421 problem is nobody outside or Argentina understands that we literally had like 20 different dollar vs peso valuations/prices depending on circumstance (remember dollar Qatar or dollar Coldplay) so they just say the new government devalued the peso because they take the official value as reference (which would be true in most countries except for Argentina or Venezuela 😂). Hard times where the USSR laid its eyes on Argentina, attacking and training terrorist groups known here as Montoneros, who trrorized the country and forced people to actually like initially the idea of a dictatorship, supporting it in its early stage while the US also had its influnce.
Argentina has one of the best hands on terms of resources and geography, and a well educated population, but thought itself an already fully developed nation when it was still an emerging one. It just needs to get over its State obesity-related demons to overcome any other country in the region, including Brasil.
Their population is 45 million, Brazil's is 220, even if they become a richer nation they won't even become close to Brazil's power, and it's not like brazil isn't developing too just look at the graphs in the last 20 years of both countries

"Educated" really doesn't mean much. It often just result in brainwashing, worse by external forces. In a democracy, the media does the brainwashing. Argentina's only hope is, they are lucky enough some leader may emerge that is patriotic and smarter enough to get elected. In a democracy, this is the process, that anarchy will ultimately result in order. Milei is unlikely to be this leader, he appears to be too idealistic to be smart. Ideologies are always the extremes, it is a tool but if it becomes a religion it is a curse.
However critical I may be of Miley's ideology, I am very curious to see how Argentinian society fares under his rule. It will certainly be very interesting to watch. I hope the Argentinian people can see brighter days under his governance. Time will tell.
The fact the media is labeling a libertarian as far right, tells me he's a far lessor evil than whatever left wing idea is pretending to be center-left. I dislike libertarianism, but when your alternative is actual card carrying peronist fascist and socialist what else can you do.
All I know is Buenos Aires Argentina is way cleaner, more first world looking, better public transportation and has better demographics than NYC. Hope Argentina can do a 180 and once again be rich successful country. Best to Argentina!

I have been following since Russia's invasion :D Just wanted to mention a couple of details about ARG that you haven't considered: The "Everything was going nicely until Peron came and ruined everything" narrative is incredibly oversimplistic and has been repeated over and over again here for decades, by the very same people who also ruined everything in every opportunity they had to govern. You did not make any mention of the 60s-90s decades in ARG, which were actually the moment in which this country stopped being a developed one and failed to catch up with the rest of the world's growth. In fact, during this period, for 30 years Argentina had the lowest average economic growth in the world. I humbly encourage you to further research this, as it's the main window to understand what went wrong. Going to Milei and current Argentina, tbh the situation for the government is absolutely impossible and precarious. They must take incredibly unpopular measures, like raising the bus/train tickets by 1500% in 3-4 months or increasing gas/electricity bills by 400%, at the same time that current salaries in Argentina are around 300 USD on average, and goods prices aren't so different from, say, Poland. Today, for example, Milei's team announced that they will re-create an income tax that Milei actually voted for its derogation when he was MP, just 3 months ago, and after declaring that he would rather cut his own arms before creating new taxes. In short, the situation is extremely dire and complicated, and the upcoming months will determine just how much patience the middle class, which is currently earning 400 USD a month but has lived most of their lives used to a higher living standard (and that was and is Milei's main electorate) and if they will continue to endure thought the pain of the process, or rather succumb and denounce Milei as a failed emergency surgeon.

Not to mention the savvy move Milei did for Zelensky during his inauguration. I truly hope that Argentina does fix its problems and finds its place in the sun again. As well I’m hoping Milei moderates his views and is a successful president even if I don’t agree with him ideologically. But sadly I don’t have much confidence. Also I find it freaking hilarious that he is this super anti government libertarian who sees the government as the enemy. But as soon as he’s in charge he begins beefing up the police and military in preparation for massive crackdowns. I live in a region with a lot of American style libertarians and all the ones I’ve spoke with are the same; they hate taxes, hate the government, and want absolute freedom. But all of that disappears the moment there is a crime around them or a group they don’t like starts protesting; then they scream for the police to crush them as violently as possible. One of them was even self aware enough to tell me, a truly libertarian utopia state would require everyone to believe in libertarianism and go along with its ideology. Which is impossible, human beings bring human and all. So anyone who doesn’t should be ‘removed’ from society. At least he’s fucking self aware. But once again those are my personal experiences and they might not be representative. It’s just interesting seeing a bit of correlation.

For us Libertarian, the government/state has 2 basic functions: 1. *Maintain internal order* thru law enforcement and justice system 2. *Protect the society from external threat* by organizing collective defense, thru national military and other means. That's it. No wealth redistribution, no social engineering, no market intervention, no central plan. No public infrastructure project, no public transport, no public healthcare, no public education. *No subsidy for the poor nor bail out for the rich.*
Libertarian means having a small government that does the few responsibilities it has well. Those responsibilities being military, judicial system, infrastructure and legislature from my understanding. Basically the libertarian government primary job is to keep law and order, but otherwise keep their big noses and grubby hands out of the citizen's business. If that means hiring more police or judges to keep the peace and handle private property disputes so be it. That's the primary responsibility a government is supposed to have above all others. Other than that they pretty much want zero welfare programs, no government owned businesses/schools, and nearly zero regulation and licensing laws(license as in government won't allow you to work unless you have a government approved license to do the job).

Although the works are then executed by private companies, these works are sponsored by the government. And reciprocally, a government could offer the services of its country's companies by reaching a preferential price agreement. Well, Milei will stop doing such things with China. But private companies can do business on their own without government interference.
While its "wait and see" conclusion is the correct one, this video would be more informative if it spent more time capturing the details of Milei's political and economic philosophy, and less time giving voice to personal attacks on him that are likely baseless. Milei is one of those public figures who is often painted as "crazy", but when you listen to any long-form interview with him, you'll find he can clearly explain his policies, back them up with references to economists and political/social scientists, and tie everything together in an articulate, thoughtful way. This of course makes it difficult to attack his ideas on non-ideological grounds, so opponents resort to personalized attacks to appeal beyond their base. Terms like "psychopath", which he certainly could be since that diagnosis does not preclude coherent thinking, are used as a shorthand way of warning people off and side-stepping the challenge of a public policy debate with someone who has very high breadth and depth in his thinking. It would be nice if everyone put their cards on the table like Milei, but unfortunately if you have in-the-box ideas, you're not required to back them up,, whereas out-of-the-box thinking can be dismissed as "crazy" without much blowback. This is true in business as well as the political and social spheres. It's only the certainty of steady decline and the likelihood of ultimate collapse under the current system that led so many voters to take a risk on his radical policies.
Libertarians are the communists of the right wing. Their BS never sounds good or particularly interesting, because it has nothing to do with common sense. Yeah for sure, no state, and noone dares to touch my earnings, which is actually protected by the police in other words the state itself. So at the end we always finish off a that the poor are paying the rich guys defense.
This is a left leaning site. They're not going to give voice to his ideas. Count how many times you hear "radical" "far-right" or other derogatory terms. The sad truth is none of them are true. This site, and the left as a whole, fears the objective rationality of Milei. The mere fact that they present Libertarianism as anything other than centrist shows how ignorant they are of it.
I don't know man, this may true if you are looking online and social media. But I follow economic researchers and they have plenty of valid criticism for him. And one of the common ones is that many of the economists and political/social scientist that he provides as reference are either politically aligned or funded by conservative think tanks. So essentially backers of his politics, not necessarily of the field itself. Just because someone is articulate and can say 'listen to all these other experts agree with me'; can still feed empty promises and half-baked idea to a desperate people that are looking for any type of change in order to get in power. This is a common path for politics in troubled countries. Admittedly, I'm not an active working expert in economics, but I do have a graduate degree in applied financial economics and follow a diverse background of economists. And the only ones agreeing with him are the same ones that act like 40 years of trickle down economics is good for the US economy because of how well the stock market has done; while actively ignoring/denying that it has also resulted in stagnant wages for the middle class, skyrocketing medical and housing costs, cost of living in general has gone up greatly, and an increase in homelessness and crimes from growing poverty. And the same can be found in the UK under Thatcher. There is plenty of research out there that finds over liberalization of the market can actually harm the every day citizen while feeding more wealth to those already in wealth. Not to say that there shouldn't be an overview and re-haul of regulations and governmental inefficiencies. But there is such thing as over correcting. And over correcting is a valid criticism, and the one I have predominately seen made. Not based on 'psychopath' or how you are describing it. One of my favorite quotes from a policy researcher: "Communism and anarcho-capitalism have the same thing in common. They are simplistic to understand and sound great on paper or in a political speech, but both fail equally in practice."
No doubt there are absolutely many valid criticisms of Milei and his policies! But that doesn't mean its EASY to make these criticisms compared to the obvious lies and oversimplifications of other politicians. I think this is best illustrated by your final quotation... if one thinks Communism is "simplistic to understand", then one's understanding of Communism and its history must be limited to grade-school propaganda. So this, taken out of context, is a pretty simplistic and reductionist take on Milei - not as bad as calling him "crazy", but adjacent in its facile dismissiveness. GDP per capita may have been higher but the wealth was concetrated in hands of the few rural land owner elites called estancieros, if you see metrics like life expectancy, percentage of literacy, education level, averange argentinians quality of life was on par to neigboring countries.
You are completely wrong about China. Milei supports free trade with China. He's support have relations beyond commerce with China. Milei supports free trade with each country, believing that he doesn't control the actions of his citizens.
If Argentina recovers under Havier, the evidence and message will be there... libertarianism will officially be the most prosporous economic and political system for a government to adopt. And we can finally with evidence point to the importance of transitioning to it. I hope this is the case, this is our first chance for a global political shift to freedom.
My humble opinion (as an argentinian) is that, unfortunately, Argentina is beyond recovery or salvation; no matter if a radical left-right winger, a moderate centrist or any kind of peronista rules the country.
When a country is in financial problems it's always acceptable to cut pensions, social services, infrastructure development or whatever. Each affecting millions of people. Meanwhile it's somehow unaccepable to tax companies and individuals worth billions of dollars. People who could loose 99% of their wealth and still be 1000 times richer than the average. Nah, let's better cut a guys pension by 10% after he worked 50 years and has barely enough for a relaxed retirement.
Bruh, stop projecting some american twitter "eat the rich" bullshit, they are doing just that since 1940s and it only gets worse with time. Increasing taxation can't solve any problems when there's not much to tax in the first place. And even if somehow they'd manage to substantially increase their budget, and at the same time not let those hypothetical companies go bankrupt, they'd still have to figure out how to efficiently spend that money on economical investments (and it's naive to think that any Latin American country would ever have functioning bureaucracy)
And when companies leave the country due to tax pressure, and the people who work in those companies lose their jobs, who are you going to collect those honorable taxes from, genius?

Give the ownership of the companies to the workers and hire 1 new guy to replace the little work the owner did before, if they did any. (Large companies are run by CEOs and not the owner anyway). There is a saying: If tomorrow all workers stay home, no work get's done. If tomorrow all owners stay home, nothing changes.

@@montyoomska You are wrong, data from Maddison Historical Statistics shows that in 1895 and 1896 Argentina 🦁 was not one of the richest countries, but number one, with the highest GDP per capita in the world. The following positions were for the United States, Belgium, Australia, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. You have to inform yourself well.
Things will not change in Argentina unless the people significantly change their collective mindset. Blaming problems on outside factors beyond their control is engrained in the culture of Argentina. They need to start looking at themselves... And not just the politicians, but every single Argentinian.
People here complain about corrupt politicians yet everyone always break the law as much as possible. In fact, If you try to be a good citizen they'll look down on you. Argentina has the politicians it deserves.

Something that is barely mentioned in the video is the support former president Macri's party, "Juntos por el cambio" gave him in the second round. Practically all the votes that "Juntos por el cambio" got in the first round, were transferred to Milei in the second round and that gave him the overwhelming victory over Peronism. But also Macri's legislators are giving him a lot of support in Congress.

Last we knew from them today was that they changed their vote during the vote of an important huge changes and new laws, super powers for the president, stopping the subsidies of some millionaires that make "culture" (movies) and other stuff. @@morenitomoreno1282 Lowering spending in general, buying dollars and changing the crumbling peso currency to a more stable exchangable currency ( euros, dollars, australian dollars, you name it) can give a better international interest as a more stable nation, in general, its pretty much the State vs some Mafia States ( provinces here) because so far, after a province went in debt after taking a loan, and in such contract to take the loan it was written that "The money would be taken from the coparticipation money sent to the province if the province didn't pay in time". Such thing was done, as per contract, and the province is talking about the State being evil, striking the province down and so on and so forth, when the contract was signed with the previous goverment, and the new governor took a loan of almost 10 times the size of the debt, and spend money on carnivals and increasing the money spent on its own "senators" ( its diputados but deputies aren't the same thing). In general, seeing 2 things you don't agree with doesn't mean its the whole thing Argentina is doing. Lowering the massive excess spending is vital to not commit the monetary emission problem ( causing more inflation), which by then you get a more stable and lowering inflation per month, a more stable coin, and prices won't scale up insanely high due to actual speculation ( with devaluation of the coin, you must appreciate your goods that preserve better their value.)

I admire Milei's call to cease trade with china on moral/ideological grounds. I understand this would be impractical for many other nations, but I love a principled stance.

If you don't then you honestly should avoid giving your opinion on things you know nothing about. He managed a balance by cutting retirement funds, budgets for education, science, welfare, etc. the dumbest person alive can do that. All the while indenting the country to the IMF even further since now state income from taxes is the lowest in 9 years because he destroyed people's purchasing power. And this is just the beginning, unless congress or the people stops him we will be seeing the destruction of all national industry as it happened in the 70s and 90s.
If the US was smart (which we are not) we would be doing everything in our power to make sure this is a success and that we're seen as a facilitator of its success. Peronism is so awful and Argentina has so much potential. Would also be an incredibly valuable ally in this changing paradigm.

Talking about Perón in terms of right and left is tricky. His economics was a mix of national socialist and populist policies and tried to industrialize a mostly agricultural economy. Most of the debt that affect Argentina to these days was done by the military juntas in the 70s and neoliberal policies in the 90s. Your view is short sighted and simplistic. I understand that Perón looms big for people out of Argentina but you should analyze that whole history not cherry pick to fit your discourse. Milei is a sad mistake that will only impoverish the population and will be ousted in no time.

I'll explain again. Private companies can do business with whomever they want. But the Argentine state will not give contracts to companies from dictatorship run countries. So for example, before Milei the Argentine state could hire Chinese companies to do infrastructure work or whatever, now they will not. However if a private Argentinian company wants to do business with a Chinese company they are free to do so, freer now since Milei will drop all tariffs to 0.

I am portuguese and let me tell you that IMF reforms where basicly reverted by the Socialist Party that has been in power for the last 8 years. They bought back the airline and slashed all labor reforms, but were smart enough to keep debt in check so not to create the same problem of 2009. Regardless of his politics, with the third largest party in their legislature (~26.5%), it seems questionable how much could be done. Plus even if gets the other major party that seems closer to his goals, that is just barely getting to a narrow majority, which tends to have it's own issues.
Only for two years and already got his major reform bill through the “house floor” and seems to have the votes to pass in the next two days. They have one big advantage tho - their population is fairly educated (at least compared to the region). They need to implement major political, economic, and societal changes so that they could ever reach their potential.

Being recently back from Argentina I'd say that it is actually one of the problems that most South American countries have that they don't... I'm an Economist and I can't understand how Argentina was able to get into such a deep hole. No, I didn't use the "Libertarian definition". I said that this a matter of math. Let's say that the amount of corruption for 2 hypothetical nations with the same GDP is 10%; however, "Libertarianstan" has a government that eats just 10 billions of dollars of the GDP, while "Socialistan" eats 100 billions.
Therefore, if for both the amount is the same 10% of corruption, than it follows that "Socialistan" will have 10 billions drained through corruption, while "Libertarianstan" will only have 1 billion drained.
The more power you give to the State, the more corruption. It's a simple matter of math. Also, the more laws a country has, the more corruption it has, because there will be more reasons to circumvent those. And more incentives to get close to the agents of power.
It's not by coincidence that socialist countries are rotten to the core with corruption.
Im Czech, I can say that the change from dictatorship to capitalism was stunning. In 30 years we have higher purchasing power than Italy or Spain. I hope for people in Argentina the same sucess.

I always get pissed when people say he "devalued the Peso"
He didn't really devalue as much as in was being honest with the actual value of the currency and move it closer to the black market price (which is the one common folk use since nobody could access dollars at the state sanctioned price there was before).
To put things in perspective the official state sanctioned price was 1 dollar equalled 370 pesos, while the black market was trading between 900 to 1000 pesos per dollar. Milei moved it to 800 and that still falls short of the real price 😂

As an Argentinian myself I can ABSOLUTELY say you are right, the peso never was as close to the dollar as they said officially, prices always were 3, 4, or even 5 times the amount the official peso was. Plus if you wanted to buy dollars they would apply so many taxes that the difference between that and the black market one was next to invisible.
Milei did the right thing in putting a more honest number to the peso, mostly because it did nothing to change negatively the prices right after, we all knew the real value and now is closer to what it is. That is just being honest with your people.

Just wanted to mention a couple of details about ARG that you haven't considered:
The "Everything was going nicely until Peron came and ruined everything" narrative is incredibly oversimplistic and has been repeated over and over again here for decades, by the very same people who also ruined everything in every opportunity they had to govern.
You did not make any mention of the 60s-90s decades in ARG, which were actually the moment in which this country stopped being a developed one and failed to catch up with the rest of the world's growth.
In fact, during this period, for 30 years Argentina had the lowest average economic growth in the world. I humbly encourage you to further research this, as it's the main window to understand what went wrong.
Going to Milei and current Argentina, tbh the situation for the government is absolutely impossible and precarious.
They must take incredibly unpopular measures, like raising the bus/train tickets by 1500% in 3-4 months or increasing gas/electricity bills by 400%, at the same time that current salaries in Argentina are around 300 USD on average, and goods prices aren't so different from, say, Poland.
Today, for example, Milei's team announced that they will re-create an income tax that Milei actually voted for its derogation when he was MP, just 3 months ago, and after declaring that he would rather cut his own arms before creating new taxes.
In short, the situation is extremely dire and complicated, and the upcoming months will determine just how much patience the middle class, which is currently earning 400 USD a month but has lived most of their lives used to a higher living standard (and that was and is Milei's main electorate) and if they will continue to endure thought the pain of the process, or rather succumb and denounce Milei as a failed emergency surgeon.

Also I find it freaking hilarious that he is this super anti government libertarian who sees the government as the enemy. But as soon as he’s in charge he begins beefing up the police and military in preparation for massive crackdowns. I live in a region with a lot of American style libertarians and all the ones I’ve spoke with are the same; they hate taxes, hate the government, and want absolute freedom. But all of that disappears the moment there is a crime around them or a group they don’t like starts protesting; then they scream for the police to crush them as violently as possible.
One of them was even self aware enough to tell me, a truly libertarian utopia state would require everyone to believe in libertarianism and go along with its ideology. Libertarian means having a small government that does the few responsibilities it has well. Those responsibilities being military, judicial system, infrastructure and legislature from my understanding. Basically the libertarian government primary job is to keep law and order, but otherwise keep their big noses and grubby hands out of the citizen's business. If that means hiring more police or judges to keep the peace and handle private property disputes so be it. That's the primary responsibility a government is supposed to have above all others.
Other than that they pretty much want zero welfare programs, no government owned businesses/schools, and nearly zero regulation and licensing laws(license as in government won't allow you to work unless you have a government approved license to do the job).

Milei is one of those public figures who is often painted as "crazy", but when you listen to any long-form interview with him, you'll find he can clearly explain his policies, back them up with references to economists and political/social scientists, and tie everything together in an articulate, thoughtful way. This of course makes it difficult to attack his ideas on non-ideological grounds, so opponents resort to personalized attacks to appeal beyond their base. Terms like "psychopath", which he certainly could be since that diagnosis does not preclude coherent thinking, are used as a shorthand way of warning people off and side-stepping the challenge of a public policy debate with someone who has very high breadth and depth in his thinking. It would be nice if everyone put their cards on the table like Milei, but unfortunately if you have in-the-box ideas, you're not required to back them up,, whereas out-of-the-box thinking can be dismissed as "crazy" without much blowback. This is a left leaning site. They're not going to give voice to his ideas. Count how many times you hear "radical" "far-right" or other derogatory terms. The sad truth is none of them are true. This site, and the left as a whole, fears the objective rationality of Milei. The mere fact that they present Libertarianism as anything other than centrist shows how ignorant they are of it.
I don't know man, this may true if you are looking online and social media. But I follow economic researchers and they have plenty of valid criticism for him. And one of the common ones is that many of the economists and political/social scientist that he provides as reference are either politically aligned or funded by conservative think tanks. So essentially backers of his politics, not necessarily of the field itself. Just because someone is articulate and can say 'listen to all these other experts agree with me'; can still feed empty promises and half-baked idea to a desperate people that are looking for any type of change in order to get in power. This is a common path for politics in troubled countries.
Admittedly, I'm not an active working expert in economics, but I do have a graduate degree in applied financial economics and follow a diverse background of economists. And the only ones agreeing with him are the same ones that act like 40 years of trickle down economics is good for the US economy because of how well the stock market has done; while actively ignoring/denying that it has also resulted in stagnant wages for the middle class, skyrocketing medical and housing costs, cost of living in general has gone up greatly, and an increase in homelessness and crimes from growing poverty. And the same can be found in the UK under Thatcher. There is plenty of research out there that finds over liberalization of the market can actually harm the every day citizen while feeding more wealth to those already in wealth. Not to say that there shouldn't be an overview and re-haul of regulations and governmental inefficiencies. But there is such thing as over correcting. And over correcting is a valid criticism, and the one I have predominately seen made. Not based on 'psychopath' or how you are describing it.

My humble opinion (as an argentinian) is that, unfortunately, Argentina is beyond recovery or salvation; no matter if a radical left-right winger, a moderate centrist or any kind of peronista rules the country.
When a country is in financial problems it's always acceptable to cut pensions, social services, infrastructure development or whatever. Each affecting millions of people. Meanwhile it's somehow unaccepable to tax companies and individuals worth billions of dollars. People who could loose 99% of their wealth and still be 1000 times richer than the average. Nah, let's better cut a guys pension by 10% after he worked 50 years and has barely enough for a relaxed retirement.

@@morenitomoreno1282 Lowering spending in general, buying dollars and changing the crumbling peso currency to a more stable exchangable currency ( euros, dollars, australian dollars, you name it) can give a better international interest as a more stable nation, in general, its pretty much the State vs some Mafia States ( provinces here) because so far, after a province went in debt after taking a loan, and in such contract to take the loan it was written that "The money would be taken from the coparticipation money sent to the province if the province didn't pay in time".
Such thing was done, as per contract, and the province is talking about the State being evil, striking the province down and so on and so forth, when the contract was signed with the previous goverment, and the new governor took a loan of almost 10 times the size of the debt, and spend money on carnivals and increasing the money spent on its own "senators" ( its diputados but deputies aren't the same thing).
In general, seeing 2 things you don't agree with doesn't mean its the whole thing Argentina is doing.
Lowering the massive excess spending is vital to not commit the monetary emission problem ( causing more inflation), which by then you get a more stable and lowering inflation per month, a more stable coin, and prices won't scale up insanely high due to actual speculation ( with devaluation of the coin, you must appreciate your goods that preserve better their value.)

If you don't then you honestly should avoid giving your opinion on things you know nothing about. He managed a balance by cutting retirement funds, budgets for education, science, welfare, etc. the dumbest person alive can do that. All the while indenting the country to the IMF even further since now state income from taxes is the lowest in 9 years because he destroyed people's purchasing power. But the Argentine state will not give contracts to companies from dictatorship run countries.
So for example, before Milei the Argentine state could hire Chinese companies to do infrastructure work or whatever, now they will not.
However if a private Argentinian company wants to do business with a Chinese company they are free to do so, freer now since Milei will drop all tariffs to 0.

From the cab driver to the cafes to the bars everything revolves around English music and culture even the London phone booths are in Buenos Aires. Look it up if you don't believe me. The Argentine people are very Anglo centric. They certainly love the English much more than they love the Spaniards from my experience as an Argentine American.

@@joekaputt4415 Protectionism isn't really a big deal. The big deal is deregulation and market competition internally. Reducing the size of the state, and eliminating the welfare state are most important. China, Japan, Korea were all very protectionist during their industrializations as well.
I am portuguese and let me tell you that IMF reforms where basicly reverted by the Socialist Party that has been in power for the last 8 years. They bought back the airline and slashed all labor reforms, but were smart enough to keep debt in check so not to create the same problem of 2009. This means we don't need IMF help but also are fast aproaching the worse standard of living in Europe. We're fucked basicly because 25% of our under 39s are living abroad and whats left are pensionists, public sector workers and people who just don't want social spending cut. So no growth for a decade. 😢

Regardless of his politics, with the third largest party in their legislature (~26.5%), it seems questionable how much could be done. Plus even if gets the other major party that seems closer to his goals, that is just barely getting to a narrow majority, which tends to have it's own issues.
Only for two years and already got his major reform bill through the “house floor” and seems to have the votes to pass in the next two days. He is holding financing to provincial goverments hostage (Either they vote in favour or he forces the local governments to extreme austerity measures by taking away a tax he can veto and the governors want)
With two years I mean there will be midterms where he can get a lot more congress votes in case economic recovery has started by 2025 which if the current bill passes is quite likely
All he has to do is shrink the size and reach of government. Functional markets solve problems, not government. Milei is trying to teach Argentines this basic truth. Nothing magic about it.

I am originally from Argentina. No, Milei will not save Argentina because he is using cosmetic measures. Argentina's problem is its monstrously unfree markets. There is no true market economy in Argentina, it is merely monopolies in respectful competition with one another.
He literally just gave a speech at the world economic forum claiming that there was no difference between a whole slew of ideologies, some as contradictory as nationalism and globalism. At the end of that same speech he gave the most glowing praise of the billionaire class that I may have ever witnessed, going to far as to call people on any form of government assistance parasites. Pair this with his heavy restrictions on protesting, he's at best a new coat of paint on the same political system argentina has had. And at worst He is very clear about who he intends to benefit and who he intends to leave behind.
As an argentinian citizen i'll tell you this: Keep on supporting brussels/paris ideas and in no time your kids will be living like those in villa banana, la matanza or resistencia and also please, don't talk about something that you don't know in the slightest or at the bare minimum go read the 2000 pages of reforms that have been introduced since december 11
