I was born and raised in the Philippines and English is our 2nd official language. We're taught since we're in preparatory and the medium of instruction in our school is English. But unlike my peers, I'm a little more passionate about learning the language and even more passionate about sounding like a native. I'd watch countless American tv shows and movies to expose myself to American English. It paid off....few years later I found myself speaking the language fluently with an American accent. It just flows . Now, I find it easier to express my thoughts using English, than my own native language. Weird. LOL.
Guys, it's ok to learn english and trying or even become a fluent english speaker or even sound like a native, same here I'm a born and raised filipino in the philippines, and I try to sound like a native speaker and try to be fluent in it. But also remember to learn our own language, why learn the english language by taking classes or watchin youtube videos to learn english but not tagalog or whatever your dialect is? We have to be more connected to our roots and be proud of it. One of the most important thing filipino should learn is our language. Why don't you guys take a filipino language class? Or watch youtube videos that will help you in tagalog or bisaya? Actually if you just search it you'll find videos in youtube about learning in tagalog and bisaya, I personally searched for it and found it, and I plan to learn tagalog and bisaya soon, specially when I have time. Now I'm just concentrating in english. 'Coz I already have enough knowledge in tagalog in bisaya, but still wants to be more fluent in both language and dialect. And guys remember to give importance to our own, wether it be language, music, culture, etc. 'Coz remember that's our own, and those are part of who we are as a filipino

Try to learn Portuguese , I’m native Portuguese speaker till today I don’t know right lololol. What I realized learning another language , you need listening every single day then you’ll get used to ears with news sounds . I’m learning about English and there are so many things I can’t understand lololol But I keep it up
As a native English speaker I never thought about this. I’m fascinated by linguistics and by English. When I studied abroad and met study abroad friends at my school in America it really opened my eyes to how complex English is. So props to anyone who can learn this freakin language
Japan na, for me, English is the most beautiful language in the world, but is far from being a hard one. You can't judge a language by its "rules" of contractions, because every single language has contractions. Portuguese (my mother tongue), for example, is full of them. Combine this with word genres, plural (which modifies sometimes all the words in a sentence) and a lot of different forms that different subjects use in a sentence. So, English is not hard; it's the opposite. It's a simple and beautiful and very useful language. _I know I've made a lot of mistakes, but it's been only a year since I started learning._
@taesthetic, actually, I like English since I was a child, but only around a year ago I really started studying. I watch videos of native English speakers on UA-cam, I read books in English, I watch movies, TV shows, everything in English. It's a complete immersion.
I’m from America and English is my first language but for some reason I love to watch these videos to see what non-native speakers have to learn. I honestly kind of feel bad because we have so many different ways to say one word or sound. English is so complicated 🤦🏼♀️
Bts trash english is very easy, the grammar is extremely schematic. Of course there are some things to smooth, but it all goes off while living in english-speaking country.

I'm not a native speaker and since I was a kid, I wanted to speak English and now that I can do it, I've realized if you speak as everybody does, automatically you'll get the accent and use fast speech correctly.
I can understand everything that you say in your videos, but when I try to watch a movie or a series without subtitles I can't. It's so frustrating... These kinds of tips are helping to figure out the reason why. Thanks! Regards from Brazil.
Hey Rafael, where in Brazil do you live in? I'm also from Brazil, and it would be awesome if you created a group on WhatsApp to exchange English knowledge, if you do it, I'm in. 5585997126691
omg, im from poland and all time i think i bad in eng but now i see i speak like native some sentence :D it does not change my gram and vocabulary etc is bad but its more motivation to learn :) this what u talk i learn from amercian tv shows, serials and youtube. i like watch how difrent american people say and how them mouth and tongue looks when speek.
We exactly need stuff like this as an English learner, not textbooks that put you much further from the english natural sound. Keep it comin', please!!!
Thank you so much, Stefanie! I'm from Ukraine and it's so easy to understand what you are talking about. It's very helpful. That's really what I've been searching for! You are so great, positive and kind. Thanks!!!
Oh my gosh, you are so beautiful and speak so clearly, my ears are falling in love eith your soothing voice. Me subscribo para seguir practicando mi listening😃💕
Good video, thanks! I know 4 languages and learn 5th. In my opinion, English is the fastest of all languages. Unfortunately, many teachers speak too slowly when they teach their students. As a result a lot of students know many English words separately but they can't understand native speakers. You have the right approach. Cause You speak quickly and help us improve our listening skills
You are so right! These are the kinds of things you learn about learning languages once you’ve done it! Unfortunately, many English teachers have never learned a foreign language 😩
YOOOO im a native english speaker..but i never actually knew this is how we talk. I mean i did but not like this. Its also intesting to watch these videos knowing all of the "english ways" and just realizing all these thing that non native speakers have to learn and go through and to see how my language (not rlly "mine but u know what i mean) really is.
I was talking to my friend about this! They are from Japan and moved to Texas! I was mentioning how we roll stuff together when speaking and how it must be so scary to listen to. Like how instead of saying "You all are going right? Because if you don't want to then I'm going to go by myself." We would say: "Y'all're goin' right? If you don't wanna then I'm gonna go by myself." People who are bilingual are amazing I can't imagine learning another language. So much dedication and hard work. I always admire people who do.
I’ve been looking for that kind of video for years. As I’ve always thought, the biggest problem about textbooks is the way they teach us English in written form rather than spoken form. That’s why I can only watch movies and TV shows with the subtitle activated (in English, of course). Even when I hear the sound and read the captions it doesn’t seem the same. Sometimes, a huge dialogue is spelled out in a second. That’s crazy.
I’m officially addicted to watching your videos lol sorry, not in a creepy way though, this year I really want to improve my English, been in the state for about 14 years and have no problem communicating but now running my own business I deal with all kinds of people and need to up my game. :)
Hey, I’m in the music industry, I have a sound design company called That Worship Sound, we’re dedicated to make “sound libraries” also referred to as “sound banks” for computer based softwares, its a new concept it might not be easy to understand for none musicians, but you can definitely check out more on my about page also have links there to my websites, here’s a video on how my sound libraries can be used to make music. :) ua-cam.com/video/zJFydI0Gv0A/v-deo.html
"linking and reduction", this is what I wanted to know. actually every japanese english teachers doesn't not teach kinda these things:( I got it. I can listen to native English easily better than before!! big thanks:)
I guess language teachers won't teach those things even if they know it, unless you are in their country. I suspect that's because, as she mentioned in the video, those things are different in different countries and different regions, and the teachers would have to assume that the students are looking for a specific dialect of English. Try asking a teacher who learned English in Australia to teach you linking and reduction and you'll be in for a trip, lol.
The English fast speech you are explaining is the informal English and that is why we as English learners don't understand sometimes, it's just a matter of practicing or speaking with native English speakers in order to learn your fast speech, because we only learn formal English in schools or courses. This is like in Spanish, for example, in Latam we have lots of accents and ways to speak very fast by reducing words or sentences. Very good and useful video!
I studied British English all my life until I selflerned the American accent 'cause of how much I loved it's sound. I still love it and, in spite of I just realized I still have a lot to learn and I'm finding it a bit complicated, that doesn't mean I didn't wanna learn to speak with an American native speaker even if it's you. Greetings from Argentina.
For real though, as a native english speaker I don't even have to open my mouth to "say" the phrase "I don't know," because the meaning just gets across from the inflection of my voice! I hope people know what I mean!
Im from Brazil and I'm trying to use your videos to understand and learn more about English. You are very sweet and I love the way you speak. I hope i can do it one day. Thanks a lot!
I read an interview with the actor Michael Caine who once worked with a voice coach on an American accent for a movie role. The coach told him to let the syllables "lean on each other." We native English speakers in the US really let the sounds slide around quite a bit, I never realized to what extent before watching this video!
Great video!!!! It is called "Connected Speech" for the people who want to search for more about it... Regarding the video you were so right in saying that the assimilation of sounds varies according the region. Nevertheless, some assimilated sounds which you greatly pronounced are the same as in British English.. It is quite interesting!!! Anyway thanks for your videos! They are really useful!!!
Wow Steph! this is an easier way to learn, I have been reading books and listening audios every single day and at this point I think I am improving more when I watch your videos because you explain everything clearly, thank you so much for helping us !!
That's why I think that text books audios are ridiculous because poeple don't speak like that, I learnt a lot by hearing natives speakers through UA-cam channels and movies I have a suggestion: Would you make a video about slang that natives speakers use all the time? As well as the informal speech like double negatives and even triple negatives! Also the way that they eliminate the auxiliary verb and stuff like that. It could be great, because as a english learners we have to deal with it all the time! Greets :)
Hi, Frank! Those are awesome suggestions... thanks!!! I'll have to add them to my list of video ideas. :) And you're right about textbook audios... NOBODY talks like that. It's actually really sad that people even make curriculum with that kind of material... it really doesn't help you guys in the real world... and nobody wants to sound like a robot in a foreign language. Lol
The English Coach But, on the other hand, you are careless about the written part of learning English. It seems that all the ones that support this kind of learning ignore that learners are also going to write, for example, essays or letters, and I think the most proper way to do so successfully is by studying grammar and formal readings and listenings. English isn't a completely informal language. Anyway, I have to admit that probably its informal part is the most important.
Increíble, aprendí mas en estos 13 minutos q en toda mi vida, pienso que enseñar estos enlaces entre palabras y reducciones de sonidos es el 90 % del ingles ya que el resto se puede entender sin problemas, gracias por tu video te quedo genial, un abrazo
Stefanie, good job! In my opinion it´s more useful to be familiar with they way natives speak than to rush to imitate them. I think learning the language rhythm & intonation will reduce much of the ordeal that we non-native drag! Your tips and examples tackle this frustration.
General Rule: Move your mouth as little as possible when speaking. Americans, especially California natives, do not use their mouth muscles as much as other English speaking nationalities. The same rule applies for the tongue, but it is not as extreme.
not at all. I am a non-native speaker and am fluent in it. English is well-documented unlike my native language whose documentation is severely lacking.
Hi, Stef. Great video. In my experience, I used to work as a tour guide in Margarita Island for 7 years. So it was a great training for me having to speak in English almost every day for several hours. Many of my tourists were very helpful and they corrected me when I made a mistake. So, as time went by, I became more confident and had no problem in understanding and in having long conversations in English. My problem comes when I watch a movie without subtitles. My understanding capability reduces to 20 % or maybe less. It's so frustrating because I can understand all what you say and have no problem when I watch a conference for example. But when I watch a movie or a TV series, it's like if I were a beginner. Why is it that?
Hi, Rafael! So many people ask this question that I should probably make a video about it. Usually, I think it's because in movies you hear so many different accents that you aren't familiar with. Plus, they use jargon that you might not know. All of that makes it difficult to understand.
Another thing to keep in mind is that movies include a lot of references to culture that you might not be familiar with. To watch a movie and understand it well, you have to have a lot of background knowledge about the culture that the movie comes from. Watching a movie in a foreign language is much harder than having a conversation with people from that same country.
mitsuracer87, thank you... your comment really made my day... hahaha. As a matter of fact, I've got a Proficiency in English, which supposes a native speaker level. But that was another problem for me because after I graduated, I found that my writing was pretty good since I had learnt all about grammar, but my speech capabilities were so basic... so poor. That was because they didn't teach me how to think in English. And, again, it was very frustrating for me because I was supposed to have a high level in English but I was not able to speak fluently at all. Having worked as a tour guide was really a good thing for me since I gradually started learning how to think in English. I think that the old teaching methods fail in making students get conversational skills. Too much grammar, too much translation into English, but very little conversation. That's a big problem.

I am an Indian.. If I keep listening you for next one two hours I am sure that I would be speaking like a Native American. And ur video is amazing and u are very cute!☺️
I also agree with most of the language-learning concepts you talk about on your videos. People have been learning languages through uneffective methods for decades and it's our duty to spread the word and show them there are much easier and simpler ways to learn foreign languages! It's all about learning how to learn! :D
Thank you! The video was very helpful! After repeating each phrase I felt that I can speak more easy. And I'm sure these tips're gonna help me to understand native speech better

I can remember when I started learning English the only thing that made me passionate about it, was how american sound. It's kinda funny to repeat whatever a native says.
Stephanie, I found ur channel through Hadar’s channel:) and i looove watching you. My accent and pronunciation are pretty good but I still don’t sound like a native speaker. Unfortunately American english is all about those weird reductions and schwas that are not easy to learn. Im looking forward to more videos like this one. Thank you so much!
Hi, Joanna! I'm so glad you found my channel :D You're right... American English does have lots of reductions and schwas... haha. BUT, you can learn a lot just through listening and imitation. So, keep watching my videos and soon you'll start to sound like me :)
I'm struggling against that too, honestly this is sucks because a lot of my friends says that I speak like a native but I don't feel that and I don't reduce all of those sounds. but definitely I will not give up. haha I just wanna say you are not the only one.
Thanks!

What a progress! Congrats
Same goes to me.
but we can't saying like she ,so sad~
We exactly need stuff like this as an English learner, not textbooks that put you much further from the english natural sound. Keep it comin', please!!!
Damn, she deserves more subscribers.. Love the way you teach..💕

The most useful video about English for me. Really don’t understand those people who dislike it. Thank you!
Thank you so much, Stefanie! I'm from Ukraine and it's so easy to understand what you are talking about. It's very helpful. That's really what I've been searching for! You are so great, positive and kind. Thanks!!!
I don't know why, but when you start talking you already motivate me. You're speech sounds so cool😍

Thanks.
I am learning English, I am from Colombia, your videos have helped me a lot with the pronunciation and excellent teacher
Your English is amazing. However when you speak Spanish you are so natural (I heard you in other video) thanks a lot for this lesson.
Exactly))) But your lessons are good and deprived of this omission. Thank you again for your lessons!
This comment of mine got highlighted but then i edited it and it wasnt anymore. 😭
@@lemmecatchmyson9012 Doesn't matter dude. Well, you know i also commented on a video that got highlighted though i edited it. 😉😂
I was talking to my friend about this! They are from Japan and moved to Texas! I was mentioning how we roll stuff together when speaking and how it must be so scary to listen to.
Like how instead of saying
"You all are going right? Because if you don't want to then I'm going to go by myself."
We would say:
"Y'all're goin' right? If you don't wanna then I'm gonna go by myself."
People who are bilingual are amazing I can't imagine learning another language. So much dedication and hard work. I always admire people who do.

actually we are speaking slowly because we don't know enough :D
Haha, sounds good!! More videos coming soon :D Btw, what's your business?

You are amazing! Greetings from Brazil, thanks for all,.
"linking and reduction", this is what I wanted to know. actually every japanese english teachers doesn't not teach kinda these things:( I got it. I can listen to native English easily better than before!! big thanks:)
I know, right? That's why is very hard to understand what they say on movies or TV Shows. But we'll get there!
@teg "Every Japanese english teacher doesn't teach these kinda things".
You'll get it bro
I guess language teachers won't teach those things even if they know it, unless you are in their country. I suspect that's because, as she mentioned in the video, those things are different in different countries and different regions, and the teachers would have to assume that the students are looking for a specific dialect of English.
Try asking a teacher who learned English in Australia to teach you linking and reduction and you'll be in for a trip, lol.
This lesson really helped me to understand my customers better. I'm from Philippines.

I like what you're doing. Keep it up plz. Every English Learner needs it.
I'm just starting to learn English and this video was really helpful! Thank you so much for your advices and that you help to improving language 👌

Thanks, Jose! Welcome :)
I read an interview with the actor Michael Caine who once worked with a voice coach on an American accent for a movie role. The coach told him to let the syllables "lean on each other." We native English speakers in the US really let the sounds slide around quite a bit, I never realized to what extent before watching this video!
Love the way you speak! Awesome and understandable
Thank you! I'll look it up now
Wow Steph! this is an easier way to learn, I have been reading books and listening audios every single day and at this point I think I am improving more when I watch your videos because you explain everything clearly, thank you so much for helping us !!
I hope this video really really helpfull thanks for you so much your pronunciation very well I understand and then American English great thanks 🇺🇲
That's why I think that text books audios are ridiculous because poeple don't speak like that, I learnt a lot by hearing natives speakers through UA-cam channels and movies
I have a suggestion:
Would you make a video about slang that natives speakers use all the time? As well as the informal speech like double negatives and even triple negatives! Also the way that they eliminate the auxiliary verb and stuff like that. It could be great, because as a english learners we have to deal with it all the time!
Greets :)
Hi, Frank! Those are awesome suggestions... thanks!!! I'll have to add them to my list of video ideas. :) And you're right about textbook audios... NOBODY talks like that. It's actually really sad that people even make curriculum with that kind of material... it really doesn't help you guys in the real world... and nobody wants to sound like a robot in a foreign language. Lol
Can you recommend me some UA-cam channels that speak natural English?
I love this comment. 👍

Increíble, aprendí mas en estos 13 minutos q en toda mi vida, pienso que enseñar estos enlaces entre palabras y reducciones de sonidos es el 90 % del ingles ya que el resto se puede entender sin problemas, gracias por tu video te quedo genial, un abrazo
this is the channel i was looking for with a real native! WHERE HAVE U BEEN ALL THIS TIME!?🙄
Haha welcome 😉
Your english accent and pronunciation is so spotless and clear.
Californian here repeating what you're saying, even though i'm fluent haha
Haha
Just because she is gorgeous, admit it..
*Realizes how complicated English is for non-natives*
Me: Oh. *Prays*
Floppy Arms Here it’s actually not complicated..it’s pretty easy..well for me it is 😅
not at all. I am a non-native speaker and am fluent in it. English is well-documented unlike my native language whose documentation is severely lacking.
I am from nepal...this vedio is very effective
Rafael Murúa same here.
Rafael Murúa that's funny because your writing looks like you're a native speaker.
mitsuracer87, thank you... your comment really made my day...
This is the first time that I can fully understand a video in English. thanks for your help.
Wow! more than one millions of visitor, that´s because your english is so clear! And your spanish (argentino) too. God bless you.
