    In 1977 I was in high school. And the student council kept trying to get crappy little local garage bands to play school dances. And we could not sell any tickets.
    One day, one of the council members came in with a brochure. If you booked a band on a Tuesday, you could get them for really a bargain price. So we took a risk. We booked Max Webster.
    That's right. Max Webster played my high school.
    We paid more for them to play a 3 hour set than we had ever paid for a band. By a LOT. And we sold the tickets as fast as we physically could. And wound up making a profit on the night, even though the tickets were the most expensive we had ever had for a dance. Also by a LOT.
    Lesson learned. Get a good band and you will fill the hall. After that we started booking in other big name bands on Tuesdays. But MW was the pioneer.

    Universal Juveniles was the top of my cassette tunes back in high school, it's still amazing!

    Pye Dubois, the man who co-wrote Tom Sawyer with Rush.

    • @johnnygoodman2003
      @johnnygoodman2003 20 днів тому +1

      Woh! He wrote the original the original lyrics to Tom Sawyer, which never made it on the album. The lyrics didn't fit in the beats and measures of any song structure, so Neil Peart edited it quite heavily. That's why Pye doesn't have any credits on the album.

    Great clip! Thanks so much. Wish there was more like this on such an underrated band that most people never heard of. I never knew David Stone played with Max?? Didn't he play with Rainbow too in the Dio era? Awesome!

    • @sspbrazil
      @sspbrazil Рік тому

      I don’t think they are underrated, I don’t think they were that great. Fine musicians, but the vocals and lyrics were pretty lame.

      @@sspbrazilWow, I couldn't agree less. Kim maybe struggling a bit live on this clip, but on Universal Juveniles his voice is terrific. The lyrics to plenty of MW are way more innovative and interesting than standard rock fare. Having said that, they did put out some mediocre stuff.

    Five of us travelled to Newcastle for a gig in January 1981 that was cancelled, never found out why! Lost my wallet too. Love the band still though!

    Man Max Webster were a kick ass band. They get judged solely on their recording but in that, your missing half the magic, have to hear them live to really appreciate the music I think.
    That sounds so great.

    In 1977 or 1978 I ran across a copy of "High Class in Borrowed Shoes" in a used record store in Atlanta. I liked the album cover and bought it (was like $0.99). Ironically it had one of those "promotional copy only - not for sale" stickers. Anyway, I took it home and it didn't leave my turntable for days. It was only later that I put it together that this was the same band being named checked by Rush in their album liner notes.

      2nd best canadian band.. You forgot Rush!!

    • @markrago5024
      @markrago5024 5 років тому +4

      Yeah they were still Max, but Terry complemented Kim perfectly. His absence is noticable on Universal Juveniles. It's a good album, but it's much more even and predictable than most of their albums, straight ahead hard rock boogie. I like it, Mutiny Up My Sleeve is my least favorite. The rest are pretty epic across a number of lineup changes. Kim Mitchell was the visionary, Terry Watkinson was also essential to their sound.

    • @markrago5024
      @markrago5024 5 років тому +1

      @@Star_Sn1per Its a tossup. Rush is good, but Max Webster was off the chain. Rush stuck to what worked during a given period of creativity, Max always had a few irons in the fire, they did concept albums that pivoted from one style to the next, never settling on a particular formula.

    those bloody lyrics are hilarious, I'd forgotten just how funny some of
    Max's stuff was.....as someone else mentioned, similar to Frank Zappa,
    Max Webster had a great sense of humour!!

    If I recall Greg Chadd who was in Saga cut out the live playing because his girl was expecting a baby and he was going to be a family guy if I recall correctly. So that's how Dave Stone got into the Max machine.

    • @ThePhR75
      @ThePhR75 5 років тому

      Dave Stone was in the band before Chadd. Chadd played with the 5 man lineup during fall 1980 that had Mike Gingrich on bass and Steve McMurry on 2nd guitar and was eventually replaced by the returning Terry Watkinson.

    A young JD Roberts doing the interview just a short time before Much Music was launched in Canada and before he sold out to became one of the talking heads for American news on tv...meh...can't say I blame him. He was great on Much Music along with Christopher Ward who was also great.
