My Grandfather used to sing this song when I was a little child, he was a Rhondda boy and had a power voice and worked down the Colliery pit. RIP GRANSHA SMITH. 💙
My fathers favourite Welsh hymn, was played at his funeral, I can always in my mind hear him singing Cwm Rhondda, he came from Pontnewydd, near Newport, and was a miner in his younger days, love this hymn, and loved Harry Secombe, I believe he had a strong connection to Swansea, where I am now living.
Such a lovely person Harry was.I don't think there was a bad bone in his body. A committed Christian who left a huge legacy in the U.K. for sure. And truly a wonderful singer and actor ☺️
When I was child, my family loved listening to "The Goon Show" on the radio. It was years later that I discovered that Neddy Seagoon could sing like an angel.
Thank you for that memory. At my dad’s funeral, which was in England, my Uncle’s choir couldn’t all travel, so they recorded a CD of Calon Lân which we played as he entered the chapel, while my two Uncles walked in front. The connection of my Uncle both singing and leading my father home was heartbreakingly beautiful. The story re your mother training the choir who sang her home, genuinely moved me.
Harry Secombe was my grandmothers first cousin. I never got to meet him when he was still alive, but I'm proud to say that he was part of my family. R.I.P Harry.
Grew up listening to his records and watching him on TV. A wonderful voice and a lovely person. Are you in contact with his children? I often wonder how they are getting on. A lovely family connection you can be proud of🙏👍. xx
@@margaretbrown2671 Unfortunately no. My mother passed away a couple of years ago and she was the only one left of her generation that knew them. We never really got to know the family of Harry's side. Your comment made my day because I was only just watching a video on UA-cam this morning and the American guy on there looked at lot like Harry. My comment was posted 4 years ago, so I like to think my mother and Harry were giving me a little sign....what do you think?
@Kinlochbervie50 Many thanks for all your comments. Yes indeed, the Choir is made up entirely of ordinary working men - ranging from former miners to teachers, undertakers to bricklayers. There are NO professional singers in the Treorchy Male Choir. 90% are still living in Treorchy and its few surrounding villages. They sing for the sheer love of it and the enjoyment it brings others. For further details visit the choir website
Old Harry was my dads eldest brother best friend and they were always in each others houses in Port Tennant in Swansea. Never a bad word from Harry as he was one of life's gentlemen. When dads sister came home from America Harry would keep in touch and meet her. Hope old Harry is still singing and the song Old Swansea Town still brings tears to my eyes especially if you've worked abroad for any length of time. Rest in peace Harry - a true Swansea Jack.
He did a wonderful version of this hymn on Songs of Praise from Swansea, in 1996, between the walls of Oystermouth Castle. Sadly, it doesn't seem to be on youtube.
One of the most stirring hymn tunes ever and those three verses are a dynamite hymn, too. I want it sung at my memorial service. Actually, on reflection, there are a number of superb Welsh hymn tunes and superb Welsh tunes that are not used for hymns. The Welsh can sing -- and then some. One thing I remember is how stirred up the people in the congregation got when singing "Guide me, O thou great Jehovah" to the tune Cwm Rhondda, at Trinity Episcopal Church in San Francisco as an opening hymn one Sunday. It seemed to me that we were all just glad to be there singing that tune with those words, all of us more alive for the singing of it.
Straight outta the _1982._ And don't neglect Lledrod/Spirit of God Unleashed On Earth, same book. And #335, I Am The Bread Of Life, with its soaring resurrectional refrain -- which I want sung at _my_ funeral.
In her diary written in 1860, Keturah Davies, as she sails from Southampton to Adelaide on board the Schah Jehan, mentions that she and her fellow passengers, mostly from Wales sang the hymn "Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah", not "Redeemer" at the closing of the day. Just Google "The Diary of Keturah Davies" It is a fascinating and moving account.
I can attest to the fact that they are all "just"normal blokes, I recorded a CD for them a few years ago, they were mainly local boys, all down to earth and the likes of you and me :) I recognise the hall in the video and a couple of the faces. I can't remember exactly but Huw I think was the name of their MD at that particular time, and he was a very talented arranger, and maybe his work contributes towards the reason you think they're all professional singers :)
Fascinating. I'd be interested to know what music it was sang to. Our "Cwm Rhondda" was composed in 1907 and has of course enjoyed worldwide fame. The words however were often used with other hymn tunes previous to this

Thank God fo men like these who didn’t hid their light under a bushel. They will always live through music.
Harry Seacombe I loved to hear him sing such a powerful and beautiful voice he had, Rest In Peace Harry Seacombe 🌹❤️🙏
Makes me cry. Sir Harry makes it look so easy; just walks in and out comes this glorious voice singing a glorious hymn.
When I was child, my family loved listening to "The Goon Show" on the radio. It was years later that I discovered that Neddy Seagoon could sing like an angel.
There is something wonderful about Welsh male choirs. This is very moving.
Cwm Rhondda - sung at my mother's funeral. The final chorus repeated - sung by the choir she had trained.

at my Mother's too. She was Welsh. How lovely.
I remember my grandfather, a Tonypandy boy, singing this. Great memories. RIP dad 1898 -1976
Beautiful. He was a treasure. May he rest in peace.
Harry Secombe had a quite gorgeous, naturally tenor voice. I could happily listen to him for days and not notice the time.
MsG
And he was funny too.
A magnificent voice.

My family met him many times through mutual friends. He was a wonderful person as well as singer.
@Credible Threat Thanks mate, not that I knew him personally but like you said he's still a part of my family.

I am not Welsh but fell in love with this song after hearing it in the classic film "How Green Was My Valley", Best Picture winner of 1941.
One of the few Welsh versions around too. I love them singing on the way home. Love the film.
RIP Sir Harry. Excellent voice even at that age.
If he sounded that powerful and strong in 1991, that's amazing!
My favourite hymn! No one better to sing it!
Beautiful as one would expect from the combination of Treorchy Male Voice Choir and Sir Harry Secombe.
Sir Harry. Funny man, and a tremendous tenor voice.
Harry don't have to take a back seat to anyone. Marvelous Voice.
Our Church choir got to sing this hymn last week - what a privilege!
What a wonderful tenor he was God Rest him.
The Welsh Pavarotti!
One of the greatest choirs combined with one of the greatest hymns.

Never met a Welshman that couldn’t sing like an angel.
I’m sure there must be some, but none that I’ve met so far.
We will see you in Heaven soon.
Ha, this takes me back to more honest times
Classic

Good Old Sir Harry! He sang "Guide me O thou great JEHOVAH, not "redeemer".
Time someone showed respect for the Divine Name.
The true pronunciation should be Yehovah, to my limited understanding of Hebrew.
goon but never forgotten
Wait a second: did Sir Harry still sound that strong in 1991, or was this dubbed? Wow!
A wonderful hymn!
WHEN I FEEL LOW I LOVE TO LISTEN TO THIS GREAT WELSH HYMN AND ITS MANY VERSONS, UNFORTUNATELY I PREFER JEEHOVA TO REDEMMER
Yes, they even had to change the wording of the song to further dishonour Jehovah God -their judgment is very soon!
