  • Ysbyty (Hospital) Cwm Rhondda here in Wales allows this amazing Choir to come and entertain the patients who are stuck there trying to recover. Hearing about Jesus is exactly what some of the terminally ill patients need to hear. My Aunt Hilda can hear this as she lie motionless just down the haulway. She is 101 and they have taken her off food and water and it is time for the Bread of Heaven - Jesus to take her home, and she passes away as this is sung and her room is right near this choir....but...are you ready for your call home? You must be in relationship with Jesus as is my Aunt Hilda. Tell Him you want to start a relationship today and join a good Bible based Church.

    Thank you, gentlemen. Well done.

Yes, on one of my choral concert tours, we sang a church service in Llandudno, a seaside resort in northern Wales. The church was packed, and to hear that congregation sing those powerful hymns was an inspiration. They didn't need us! -- they sang like choirs of angels; but I've been ever grateful for the chance to "sing along" with them. As a Methodist, one of my pilgrimage places is the Wesley Chapel in Bristol. The Sunday afternoon service was in Welsh: and what an experience! I didn't understand much of the sermon, but when the singing started, it was like Heaven!!!!

How my spirit thrilled to hear again this fine old Welsh hymn so enthusiastically here performed. It took me back well more than half a century to to my Sunday School days. Like this conductor, I had some musical dreams, one of which was to learn enough Welsh to be able to sing these powerful hymns, like Cwm Rhondda, Aberystwyth, Ton Y Botel and so many more in their original tongue; and as an adult that dream came true, as I combined careers in the ministry with church choral singing and conducting. My choirs and congregations in rural Vermont would good naturedly tease me that I never led a service or a hymn-sing without including at least one piece of Welsh religious music. Now, in my 80's, my singing days are over, and I preach seldom, as I now myself tread the verge of Jordan; but hearing this hymn of faith, warmed my heart and renewed my faith. PROFOUND THANKS!!
Oh, pardon an afterthought: here in America, we sing the Rev. Harry Emerson Fosdick's great hymn of faith, "God of Grace and God of Glory / On thy people pour thy power," which he wrote for the dedication of Riverside Church in New York City, to the tune "Cwm Rhondda".

@@bethyngalw : I am so very happy that you were able to find inspiration and consolation in Dr. Fosdick's hymn, "God of Grace and God of Glory", set to that fine, strong Welsh tune. I have turned to it time and again in time of depression and discouragement to bolster my own hope and faith.
You might be interested to know that Dr. Fosdick, for many years senior minister of Riverside Church in New York City, also published, in addition to several volumes of excellent sermons, an inspirational autobiography, entitled, "The Living of These Days". Though out of print, used copies are readily available at a modest cost on eBay.

If you get to Wales, you must visit St. Davids! It is heaven on earth. Was there in 2006 with a choir from the U.S. that did Evensong in the cathedral. It is a quaint little community and a walk along the trails on the cliffs by the sea is stunning. I can't describe how lovely Wales is.

Dear Lauran..I couldn’t agree with you more. Back in my New York days, I had the chance to hear a Welsh Men’s Chorus at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. It was exquisite. I’m probably not telling you something you don’t already know, but musical tones include so-called “overtones.” So, if a middle C is struck on a piano, that C contains within it the C that is an octave above it…and several higher consistent tones. It’s rather imperceptible, but it’s there. Because male voices are (typically) lower than women’s voices, there is much greater “headroom” for these overtones. I’m not being sexist, it’s just a scientific fact. So, to me at least, and probably to you and your beloved father, it is much more enjoyable to hear a male chorus than a women’s choir. Well, you can probably tell that I’m a retired teacher, and I try not to pass up any opportunity to teach! Sorry if I’ve rattled on there.
I note and admire your connection with Wales. I should know more about it than I do, but I’ve always been puzzled by, or mystified by, the Welsh language. The spelling of this hymn title is an example. Where does that come from? Where is the vowel in “Cwm.” (I’m just sayin’ 😊). Being of Irish ancestry, I’m equally puzzled by the origins and pronunciations of words you see when traveling in Ireland. But it’s not a complaint. The world would be a boring place if everything were the same everywhere.
Well, I’ll sign off. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and fond recollections about this beautiful hymn. It’s certainly one of my favorites. Peace to you. God bless..JT
