- A live necropsy and egg count on a 17-foot female python, performed on April 13th, 2017 in Naples, Fla. Biologist Ian Bartozsek performed the necropsy on an adult female python recently captured in the Everglades. Inside the snake they found 95 developing Burmese python eggs. Wildlife biologists, with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, have removed over a dozen of the invasive Burmese pythons in Southwest Florida, including 3,000 python eggs.
I have an unexplainable fear of snakes. But I also have a morbid curiosity to watch videos about them. Who else's like me?

I have relatives in florida and they recently found a giant female python that had turned the underside of their house into a nest box. The only reason they found out there was a snake under their house? All her birds disappeared over the course of a few days.
That sounds like my worst nightmare. I used to love Florida but can't w/the snakes.

If you stumbled across one of these in the wild you would possibly be dead. Everybody should be somewhat afraid of these guys as they really are very high on the food chain and definitely in one-to-one combat with an unprepared human they would most likely rank higher than us. I'm discussing the large scale 17ft plus....

That’s what killed Brian laundrie at the Everglades choked him to death and then since snakes can’t work their way past human shoulders the snake stopped eating Brian but left him lifeless nonetheless for other critters to come and finish the job

Green anaconda usually only found in South America, (Amazon). They are bigger by far than these Burmese pythons.

Jaw dropping is an understatement. I spent many years in Collier Co, fishing in the Everglades. We had to watch out for Water Moccasins and 12 INCH pygmy Rattlesnakes, as well as Alligators. The South is being taken over by giant snakes and wild pigs.

People are still allowed to get permits to own exotic pets and the pet trade business are still allowed to get those invasive species into Florida. We can't eradicate invasive species if we don't fix the source of the problem.

most of the pythons in the glades started when a private reptile-breeding facility near the Everglades was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. This is the cause of the original influx of large quantities of pythons appearing in the wild. Granted many have been released by private owners, but this is not the reason there are so many. The reason is the ones that got free from the facility were many and had already started to mate and babies were hatched by the time someone took notice.
As such breeding businesses have to be licensed by the state, the question must be asked: Why would a state already well-endowed with native snake species permit such a risky enterprise in the first place? And how was it regulated if the apparent storm-related "spill" was possible? The state instituted some new ownership criteria last year, including annual $100 fees for possession and microchips to keep track of the snakes, but it is a case of too little, too late.
Ooo I always wondered how Florida could have SO MANY people who released their pet reptiles into the wild for it to be able to become such a problem (I chalked it up to the quintessential "Florida people" and perhaps cocaine drug lords owning exotic pets lol) but never knew about this, I'll have to look into it now. Do you know the name of the facility?
You can also blame places like underground reptiles in Deerfield Beach. He was known for releasing large pythons, Boa’s and even Iguana’s That were too big for some of his customers to keep anymore, they would bring them back to him, and he would have too many of his store, so he would take them out back and release them by the canal. That canal connect to the Hillsboro canal, which directly connects to the Everglades. Without a doubt Ryan at underground reptiles is a huge contributor to the issue we have destroying our ecosystem.
They didn't expect a storm like Andrew or one intense enough to destroy the reptile farm.
Easy in 20/20 hindsight to see the risks now.

Just like anything with teeth in its mouth can and will bite but that isnt the problem. The problem actually is when it will bite. FWC has proven time and again to be more dumb over the years of late then a child that starts a new class for first time. We are in Florida, often times tropical storms, tornadoes and hurricanes hit the peninsula It may not hit one area for many years but one year it may be the only area hit. We call that common sense
@@alanstevens1296 I grew up in South Florida, I was born in Fort Lauderdale in 1969. I didn’t move from South Florida till 2012. With that said, I lived in Boca Raton minutes away from Deerfield beach, and prior to hurricane Andrew, I know for a fact the owner of underground reptiles in Deerfield beach on Hillsboro and powerline was releasing Large Pythons, Boas, and iguanas in the back of the building by the canal. Within a few short years you could see anywhere between 30 to 50 iguanas basking on the grass right outside of the canal. They spread so quickly by the mid 90’s I saw 100’s of the Iguanas near the Intracoastal in Ft Lauderdale by one of the intercostal bridges near that fire station that’s on the northside. I can’t remember if it is on Oakland Park or commercial Boulevard. I was shocked how many there were, then I remembered all the ones Underground reptiles released, and how quickly they can mate and reproduce.

One of Tyler Nolan’s friends caught an 18 foot 152 pound female 2 months ago!! He also caught a 13 footer and a few smaller ones in the same night, they all had to be killed in a humane way of course, truly sad but it really is necessary.

I live in Collier County, people don't understand that these big snakes are living in our backyard. Floridians who live north of Tampa might think this is fake. I live in the Everglades. Sonny Woods haven't heard a case of this happening. I did read a story that pythons in Asia have eaten alive people who have passed out due to being under the influence. We have had dozens of cases of missing dogs. Many conclude its alligators eating them but I believe it could be these pythons. Deers which run fast and have fast reflexes have been found inside these snakes (here in Florida, not in National Geographic Channel).

There are people who collect and breed these things for color. And they are kept in plastic boxes. They should outlaw this. Its cruel and then what happens when the snakes are no longer wanted?

The fact is, we allow the ownership of animals to people far underqualified or unwilling (unable?) to learn/do what having that animal responsibly truly means. For every owned animal (and this includes the more basic pets, like dogs and cats, but especially exotics) that is cared for and provided for with utmost respect to their needs, there are many more that suffer through substandard care because their owners are unable or unwilling to do even the basics to ensure a truly healthy life. How my heart breaks to see that dog tied outside 14 hrs or more alone outside. How I literally cry seeing all the reptiles with metastatic bone disease from owner ignorance or unwillingness to spend the money for necessary (and yes, rather expensive!) UV lighting/ timely replacements. But above all, the view of animals' veterinary care as optional. **(It's expensive and sometimes extremely inconvenient! But if you haven't ensured access to a competent vet truly experienced with your species of pet--a vet that treats dogs/cats will likely not be specialized enough to treat a tortoise--you need to make sure u can so it's ready when needed!)**
We treat them as a source of profit, entertainment, even well-meant companionship. However it is always at our whim. I can keep it in a box and barely keep it alive (or not), or I can learn what it really needs BEFORE I get it, plan accordingly, follow through with that proper care the whole duration of its ownership, and should circumstances change (cuz let's face it--it's naive NOT to expect the unexpected!), have an "escape route" that sees to it a life of proper care with someone else.
Most people get their pets on a whim, (I myself have been guilty of it!), which is not ideal! However, they then don't reliably research what it truly needs (or won't do it bc of convenience, cost, or hubris). Or, when they lose interest (either in the animal itself or in the efforts to provide the care it needs), they too often settle for the easiest way out.
The real tragedy is faceted, as not only does the little being suffer, but so much is lost in educating and engendering true appreciation for the life around us. Laws get passed/actions taken BANNING these animals (like Florida has been having to do) or destroying them (like this), which just furthers this irresponsibility as it limits GOOD, RESPONSIBLE ppl from owning and sharing them (and thus meaningfully educating us) and furthers our unconscious belief that we are entitled to own whatever we fancy and we have no accountability toward the consequences of our choices; we can just "erase" the problem like this, right?
@@saga2964 Couldn't agree more, And this video was so sad. The poor snakes in this video are the true victims. They didn't need to die, But people would rather dump an unwanted reptile than either rehome it with someone that can properly care for it, or take it to a rescue that can rehome it. But once in the wild these beautiful animals can cause major harm to the native ecosystem not to mention they can live upwards of 20 years. Personally I believe anyone that dumps an animal should be shot. This is one reason we have 30 acers of land and currently care for over 100 snakes, 15 monitors, 6 caiman, and several other species of reptile.
Our latest addition is a beautiful 21' female retic.
Sadly they are invasive in Florida & messing with wildlife populations, so it's actually illegal to release them once caught ☹️ same with iguanas

I guess I'm a cynic but I really don't see how these snakes will be eradicated from Florida. How many square miles of forest and swamp are there and how would they be searched? There are a lot of places inaccessible to humans. The guy explained it-- pythons are hard to find, even if they are tagged. I mean, look how BIG they all are...

It would be so great to see these beautiful animals articulated to be able to admire and appreciate them.
These aren't "beautiful animals" here in Florida, they are a dangerous and invasive species that are decimating the native wildlife. Add to that, they are a danger to pets (dogs, cats) and especially children.

The only way to turn this around is to turn the snakes into food. Either food for humans or animals. Just like we hunted the buffaloes to near extinction we can hunt these snakes.
The reason the Buffalo was hunted to near extinction was for a much different reason, plus they are much easier to find. You are right, they need to turn them into commercial use (food, skin, etc). Normally I'm not into killing animals but this is a completely different reason. It's an invasive species, they are devastating the ecosystem.
Late comment but unfortunately we can’t eat the pythons in the glades. Due to pollution they contain high levels of Mercury.

I am afraid of snakes, but at the same time I find big snakes like the pythons and my favorite anacondas fascinating. I will not miss an opportunity to see them on display in a well secured setting. I enjoyed this clip, and I think the instructor was very knowledgeable and kept my attention throughout. It takes a special breed of person to do this type of work. Great idea using the males to find the females; whatever can be done.

These were all almost certainly caught by trappers licenses by the state. The state pays $50 for up to 4’ and $25/foot after that. Usually, once the state records the information, the trappers keep them and sell the skin to special stores for things like you said, and the meat can be used for pigs or often charter fishing bait.

Some snakes like the Anaconda never stop growing. They grow longer and fatter each year they're alive. Now with NO natrual predators and an abundance of food in the everglades, my assumption is These phytons are soon going to develop the same growing trait and become uncontrollable monsters....

Um... snakes and most other reptiles already have that trait. It's unlikely they will all grow to be 17ft long. Snakes continue to grow until they are dead but the older they are, the slower they grow.
One of the biggest issues that Florida has is you have several breeders there that are taking the reticulated python and breeding it with different pythons to get different color variations and there is a guy who runs a UA-cam channel and I will go back and look up the site and come back and bring it on here they are playing with extremely large size snakes I had a Burmese python those grow to a very long large footage. When I knew that I could no longer handle it I didn't just release it out into the woods here in Louisiana, my cousin had a male and a female Burmese python and he had an actual bedroom in his how's that had false trees in it had misters and it was an amazing room it was like walking into an aquarium for lack of better word and he would put their lives food in there and they were able to hunt and feed just like if they were not in captivity and so I gave mine to him knowing that it would be very well taken care of but a friend of mine had one also and mind you these where before owning snakes was the cool thing to do 80s and 90s you were just weird if you don't snakes you weren't cool at all you were that's the scary dark kids stay away from it but my friends snake stopped eating and she thought it was sick and she was letting it sleep in bed with her she was a petite young lady and she finally decided you just was just going onto too long and she took her snake to the vet and he was you checking the sneak out and he asked her you know he said how long has it been since he's eating and she told him it had been over two weeks and she just could not get him to eat he wouldn't live seed he wouldn't fresh kill feed he would not freeze thawed feed nothing and he told her that it appeared to him that what he was actually doing since she was letting him to have full range of the house that he was sizing other bigger things that lived in the house and the only other thing that lived in the house where her two small children and herself there were not any dogs and weren't any cats so she got rid of her snake quickly I might add now I can neither confirm nor deny the factual nature of the veterinarian's opinion however I have following snakes my entire life and have heard and seen grotesque pictures as people that this had happened to you they become the meal but my biggest concern is when you start cross breeding trying to make a beautiful color and a different style and basically start screwing with Mother Nature it's going to screw you back. At some point it will screw you back and when it does I don't think anybody's going to be prepared for it I'm waiting for some moron to get the bright idea to try to artificially inseminate one of these beautiful, because I I love pythons I do and I hate to see that they have to reduce populations but y'all have a real problem in Florida and they need to reduce the population before the population starts reducing your wildlife and your household pets, but I'm waiting on a moron and it's only a matter of time to get the bright idea 2 inseminate one of these beautiful Creatures with oh let's say you're cottonmouth or Copperhead hell maybe he even a rattlesnake God forbid they do it with a coral snake because there had become so few bites from that particular snake that they actually quit making the Anti-Venom for it because it was so expensive to make the end of venom and a coral snake head is not that huge so if it bites you're looking at like pinky size or baby toe size or in between toes that kind of area to be bit you're not looking at like the calf of your leg unless you got really floppy skin, but I pray that the people that have the knowledge of how to do artificial insemination do not get the bright idea that just because they can do it that they actually do it because should they do that 2 a python of the sizes that you're currently finding in Florida the population would be at such a devastating lost and there would there were there would be no Wildlife there would be no protection from these things cuz they're still going to have their innate nature to feed it is one thing to be squeezed but to be bit buy something at that size and and squeezed with Venom that is a really scary serious combination
@Elizabeth Taylor I completely agree with you on that The worst problem that's going on in Florida besides the fact that people don't realize how big these things can get and they them as pets and then they can't control them and they just let them go. In the 90's I bought a couple of baby Burmese from a guy in Los Angeles whose female produced 90 eggs, 89 of which hatched.

Good question. First off, pythons aren't looking to hurt humans. If you're that worried about encountering a python, then just stay inside your house forever haha You are much more likely to be injured or killed by a random violent act, a car accident or even a dog attack (In 2017, more than 30 people were killed by dogs in the USA- most of the time it was the family dog!).

Burmese pythons were established in the Everglades well before Hurricane Andrew destroyed some breeding facilities and released more invasive animals into the environment

I am an avid snake lover, including burms. I own a pet shop, I am working on officially licensing as a non-profit rescue. I have a standing policy with every animal I sell, that if the customer is going to release an animal into the wild, then they could instead bring it to me, and I will give them anywhere from a few dollars up to wholesale price even, just to be sure it isn't released.
But, that is my store policy. That being said, the damage done to the ecosystem in Florida, regardless of whether or not it is humans fault, killing them is the only way to slow the population growth. I do however believe in using the animal to the fullest. As an avid hunter, I use as much of the animal as possible. There is no reason not to use snake leather... I know some areas they found them to have a really high mercury content, so eating may not be a great idea, but could the meat be used for something else? Mixed with other meat for livestock feed or something. It's natures way. Placing blame won't get us anywhere, but keeping or seat as top predator would help.
Good policy... as a top predator python meat was high in mercury but I think those samples were taken from only a small area in Florida... probably best if the meat goes back into the ecosystem and native animals benefit no matter what gets into it

I wanted to see inside an egg so if I missed it, that’s disappointing. Someone brought an albino snake about that size, to our school to show the kids. It took 8 of us teachers to hold it all stretched out. Yes it was alive.It wasn’t really Creepy but you could feel it’s muscles rippling under the skin.
