Since I posed the question, I have had a few lessons and we have deduced that the reason I chicken wing is because I cast my left wrist on the way down and then chicken wing to drag the face across the ball in an attempt to be square. Golf is over here in Canada, but I was unable to lose that motion prior to snow falling... hopefully next year.
