The song was sung by 60 female artists and it reached #45 on the Billboard Hot 100. There's also an all rap version that spotlights the rappers in the original song.

Echoing some other comments. I was a 1990’s R&B superfan but never heard this song one time. Makes me wonder if it was suppressed by radio back then.

Every queen in R&B to Hip Hop was in this. They filmed it like we are the world. It’s never been nothing like it since with this many 90s and 80s top females

In the late 80’s and 90’s there were several collaborations with different themes where artists got together for different causes. You don’t see stuff like this anymore. Sadly it seems like that’s an era that is long gone.

Sweet groove. Heavenly chorus. What a list of voices! Panther is a 1995 cinematic adaptation of Melvin Van Peebles's novel Panther, produced and directed by Mario Van Peebles, and starring Mario Van Peebles as Stokely Carmichael. The cast was filled with past, present, and future stars including Dick Gregory, Melvin Van Peebles, Angela Bassett, Chris Rock, Chris Tucker, Bobby Brown, Courtney B. Vance, and Bokeem Woodbine. The critics hated it. I might have seen it once in the years since, but I don't recall exactly.

This was not a huge hit, but it was a black people hit. It reached number 10 on the R&B charts and just missed the top 40 pop (#45). The song is actually a cover of a song by Joi Gilliam (the sister who sings at the end with the blonde braids) from her debut album that was arranged by Angie Stone. Both versions of the song were produced by Dallas Austin.
It was the lead single from the Panther soundtrack, a movie about the Black Panthers. The film itself was largely criticized for getting a lot of the facts wrong, but one of the indelible elements of the film is the way the black women in the film assert themselves. So that's sorta how this song was chosen for the film.

That’s what I was thinking - I don’t know how big of a hot it was on Billboard, but I remember seeing the video on Video Soul a lot. You know it’s a talented bunch when Nikki from Brownstone only gets like 2 seconds!

oh wow, how did i not know this? I literally love every single woman/ artist here involved!
Don't think it was a big hit or i was just too young to hear it but it should have been bigger, it's fire!
And how can a song that has En Vogue, TLC, Salt'n Pepa, Aaliyah, Monica etc. on the same track not be a hit? I like it alot! This is real Girlpower!
