The secret to good crowd killing is to pull your punches so it looks devastating to onlookers but is actually soft landing.

Hmm I heard a story of how they gig the term "Mosh" or "Mosh pit". The lead singer of Scream from DC was playing NYC for the first time. He while watching the opening bands said to his band mates that the NY kids really "Mash" it up on the dance floor. Someone from the NY scene overheard this and thought he said "Mosh". The rest is history. I remember reading this in zines in the 80s when I grew up.

Long ago, in times of yore, we weren't having fun until we got punched in the face and/or punched someone else in the face in a mosh pit. No fights would start either because of it. Everyone was having fun and that was just part of it. If u fell we'd pick ya back up too. The spikes and chains made it interesting also lmao.

That’s how I remember it. Except we called it slam dancing in “the pit” until caught in a mosh came out

  • @MaharlikaAWA

Why did you skip over "slam dancing?" Dude when it was called Pogo dancing, then pogoing, then it was called slam dancing or slamming. This was known for several years. The term mosh came later after slamming/slam dancing was a normal term to describe what the audience does at punk shows.
Crowd surfinbg and stage diving started early on in the late 70's even. Iggy Pop was one of the first guys to make this happen, including head walking.
This stuff is not new. It is just more aggressive or dangerous with flying fists. 80's hardcore was still very punk and just slamming and running around. Less flailing fists.
Windmill or flailing fists are based off of how punks ran around in the mosh pit and on stage. You can see early 80's videos and can see people moving more sloppy with some arms swinging.
Later with the tough guy hardcore scene that is when it turned into punches and kicks and actual fighting moves disguised as dance moves to hit people. After that the fight moves turned into how they dance violently and now we have crowd killing and other stupid things at shows. Mosh pits today are so small and full of space. Like 6 people spread out away from each other flailing and swinging arms and legs so they don't hit each other as often. Old mosh pits were massive crowds of people pushing each other around and it was a lot more fun.

You didn't mention Another state of mind documentary that followed Youth Brigade and Social D on tour in 1982. Mike Ness does the fish and some guy gives lessons on how to mosh. Might have called it slam dancing then. Its pretty cringe. But the movie is a great time capsule.

SLAYER, RATM, Korn, Slipknot, lamb of God but the craziest most deadly was Woodstock 99 and the first chord that Korn plucked!!
I'm 6 foot 5, 280 pounds and when Korn said "are you ready"
My shirt was ripped from my body, my pants fell down and my camel back burst!
I couldn't breathe and was thrashed all around 😮

Slam dancing (punk, not metal) was a way to commune with other screwed up and pissed off kids. It was a way to touch each other, without the baggage of gender dynamics, at least for me. Intimacy at the edge of alienation. A way to be alone together.

"HB Strut" Cukoo's Nest Costa Mesa my friend is where slam circles became what they are today. I've seen Bad Brains twice and those were pretty nutty pits. Exploited shows were fairly insane. That said NYC took the cake 🎂 with Cro Mags, Agnostic Front etc for sheer violence in a pantyhoe that provides all day support. I lived in the time of girls not found in pits (and cholera). A time when John Macias threw people off the Santa Monica pier a very unpopular move with the SM cops (RIP Big John). Seen Minor Threat and all Ian did was beg us to stop the mindless violence (spoiler alert! We didn't)
Now a days all I care about is how to win friends and influence people Power Stomping my way into the hearts and minds of millions a la MGK's manifesto (Chairman MGK's Little Pink Book) Keep it in my front shirt pocket
    🦶🧨💥
    Almost forgot🧠💨
For stage diving please reference Ed Clover photo of Chuck Burke @ Perkins Palace 07/04/1981 Stiff Little Fingers, Adolescents along with fellow Canuckian hosers D.O.A. When you're done doing that look up stage diving cat and behold true genius

Idgf what anybody says, "push pits" are the apex form of moshing, as someone who wears glasses and wants to see the action i really don't find getting smacked in the face to be very appealing

Agreed! I think hardcore dancing looks kind of gay. I saw fit for a king a few months ago and literally the whole floor all the way back to the sound booth was moshing. There was very little swinging at that show but I saw about 10 people leave that pit bloody (and those were just the people I noticed). I was literally bruised and sore from head to toe for a week. The next day it hurt so bad just to move. That pit was absolutely brutal! But I had so much fun!!!
I have a glasses strap so my glasses stayed on but they were bent up after the show lol
