  • I have been struggling with making a bow drill fire so my friend Joe Mobley from the Feral Woodcraft channel shared some tips on his bow drill technique. Joe is a pro at friction fire and he had some great tips on using bow drill for beginners like me.

Thanks! I have the beginners prospective as I've been learning and being taught by some highly experienced friends and I appreciate the advise about the cheater block and the focus on building duff first then the coal. And it's great that people know what materials to start with for a better chance of success which builds confidence. Using the right materials is critical! Don't try to do it unless you know you have woods that will work since some combinations simply won't. I like green sage on juniper. I also think a larger diameter spindle helps keep the set from binding up.

Success! Many thanks to Brian and especially to Joe! Joe’s body position comments were especially helpful. Decided to use pine lumber scraps and an oak bearing block since didn’t have much luck with willow. Willow may not have been dry enough. Small point on fire board end of spindle and notch depth of 30% also helped. Couple other things I discovered were the split wood chip I was using for catching char and ember was too rough. Couldn’t transfer char and ember to tinder bundle well, so used a piece of cardboard instead. Also, I’d been putting the notch on the same side of the fire board as your and other videos. However, since I’m left handed and do things backwards, notch was facing my toes instead of my heel. Couldn’t really see the notch filling up. Shifted to the other side of fire board. Can see the notch that way and also think it’s easier to keep the spindle in place. Again, thank!!

Congratulations Bryan on your bow drill ember. I’ve been fooling around with the bow drill for a good while myself…. without success. Thanks also for the tips video from Joe. I clicked his “Subscribe” button almost immediately. He had some great tips that will help me. I’ve been using too long a spindle, among other small things that all added to my bow drill failures. Great video from you and I appreciate yours and Joe’s efforts to instruct all of us out here…

YAY!!! great job. Some things that help me is to keep the notch forward so it's easy to see, have the center of spindle a bit narrower than the ends so the string don't walk so much and make sure the wood is really dry. I see too many people try wood from river bottoms or off the ground.

its a good feeling to get your first ember. took me over a year to get my first ember. pine bark can work good too for the bearing block if you can find a good thick piece or layer it. and also pine spindle on pine hearth board seems to work good. (looks like you have plenty of pine around you) if you do want to try pine for your spindle and board use the dead branches of pine for both they need to be solid, dry and resin free im here in florida and here pine are everywhere and humidity is terrible but im confident that i could get fire with all pine parts except for string to make bow drill fire. yucca leaf for string. not sure if you have yucca but it makes an excellent string if you can get it and make it.

Back when I was in Scouting (as a Asst Scout Master) here in Indiana we called the pieces of the kit: the thunderhead, the spindle, the floorboard and the bow. The technique I learned was to put your arm "under" your knee, but what works right!??...

A bow drill fire is on my list for success but so far I have not been. I have tried. It is way harder than some people make it look.

a wise man knows a bow drill warms him 3 times first when he makes the set 2nd when he makes the coal with it and finally when he gets fire with said coal CONGRATS an other tool in the mental tool box

+TraditionalBlackPowder You are asking the wrong guy ;-) But Matt Graham told me at SHOT Show to try some really dry pine so I'm sure it would. Matt is the real deal.
