- I have been struggling with making a bow drill fire so my friend Joe Mobley from the Feral Woodcraft channel shared some tips on his bow drill technique. Joe is a pro at friction fire and he had some great tips on using bow drill for beginners like me.

Thanks for having me Bryan, I had a blast my friend! And have to say, the look on your face as you got flame is absolutely priceless!! It never get's old! Congratulations!! Thanks again!
+Feral Woodcraft No. Thank YOU!
Brian, one of the true signs of wisdom is to admit you don't know something. Congratulations on showing it and asking for help. I was already subscribed to Feral Woodcraft, but I would have for this video. Great job on the fire!
I agree with you.
+Rodger Pitts I could write a book about the things I don't know.
+Guillermo Melendez Thanks.
Nothing like asking and having great friends! Kind regards.
+yveskc1 I agree.
Thanks! I have the beginners prospective as I've been learning and being taught by some highly experienced friends and I appreciate the advise about the cheater block and the focus on building duff first then the coal. And it's great that people know what materials to start with for a better chance of success which builds confidence. Using the right materials is critical! Don't try to do it unless you know you have woods that will work since some combinations simply won't. I like green sage on juniper. I also think a larger diameter spindle helps keep the set from binding up.
+FireboxStove good points
+FireboxStove All excellent points Steve!
Well done Bryan. You never forget your first successful bow drill and we all knew exactly how happy you were. Awesome stuff. Thanks for filming, Andy.
+Waymarker Bushcraft Thanks for watching. Be sure and check out Joe's channel.

Brian, thanks for introducing me to Feral Woodcraft's channel, and for highlighting this technique! I'm going to try it out this weekend and, hopefully, add it to my skillset. Thanks!
Brian and Joe great team work! I enjoy both of your channels. Learned something today, and that is a good thing.

Joe that look is priceless. It helps to make challenges, I think so. Thanks for the comment.
Patience is a virtue Grasshopper! Well done!
+snakemonkey555 Thanks to Joe.
Brian first of all great video!! Viewer from México, been watching your channel well over a year and I got to say yours is one of the best if not it [survival/bushcraft]. It's great learning with you and you've given us a great lesson in humility, you truly are a great teacher, I like your reviews too.
+Guillermo Melendez Gracias!. But Joe is the great teacher this time. His channel has a lot more good stuff too.
The thrill of success. Great job!
+Rob Bargenquast Thanks!
Success! Many thanks to Brian and especially to Joe! Joe’s body position comments were especially helpful. Decided to use pine lumber scraps and an oak bearing block since didn’t have much luck with willow. Willow may not have been dry enough. Small point on fire board end of spindle and notch depth of 30% also helped. Couple other things I discovered were the split wood chip I was using for catching char and ember was too rough. Couldn’t transfer char and ember to tinder bundle well, so used a piece of cardboard instead. Also, I’d been putting the notch on the same side of the fire board as your and other videos. However, since I’m left handed and do things backwards, notch was facing my toes instead of my heel. Couldn’t really see the notch filling up. Shifted to the other side of fire board. Can see the notch that way and also think it’s easier to keep the spindle in place. Again, thank!!
Congratulations Bryan on your bow drill ember. I’ve been fooling around with the bow drill for a good while myself…. without success. Thanks also for the tips video from Joe. I clicked his “Subscribe” button almost immediately. He had some great tips that will help me. I’ve been using too long a spindle, among other small things that all added to my bow drill failures. Great video from you and I appreciate yours and Joe’s efforts to instruct all of us out here…
+Woodenarrows Thanks
+Woodenarrows Thanks, glad it helped!
subscribed to feral wood along time ago, actually watched every vid Joe has made....he is a very knowledgeable woodsman
+SCOOP DE DOOP yes he is.
Congrats on that bowdrill ember and fire. It's always rewarding to get that ember at the end of all that hard work. I enjoyed watching this one.
+BlackRifle Survival I am glad you liked it. Joe is a great guy and highly skilled.
You call Joe the "Bow Drill King", I call him "Feral, the Pharoah of Fero Rod Fire". You picked the right man for the job Brian. Maybe we should call him PYRO!
+csh 62 I like it.
He makes two points that I don't see often: The muscle memory that you develop through practice and the way you can use your shin as a lever to apply pressure on the bearing block. Well done!
I was taught that by Joe Mobley
The look on your face as the birdnest caught flame. Priceless. I'm also one of Joes sub's.
+Chris Stone It was a turning point in my life.
I can imagine. I have yet to do it myself.
That is the look of pure joy and accomplishment! Great job!!!
+John Villafania It was a milestone
best advice I've seen so far ( I'm 74,10 months ago ).
+Roger Simmons Wow. That is great to hear. Thanks.
+Survival On Purpose I find that most people have a tendency to forget the very basics when they teach. You just covered the fundimental,NOW! How do you keep the chord from breaking from the friction ????? :-)
Greetings from the Coast Range of Oregon! Congratulations, Brian. And thank you Joe for your insight. This was one of the most informative and entertaining collaboration videos I've seen! You guys rock!
+gARY s Thanks. It was fun.
Great job Brian. I remember when, after many failures, I finally got an ember and blew it into fire. I felt like I could do anything. It looks easy seeing someone on TV, like Cody Lundin, make fire with sticks. It is not easy, but is fun when it works. Thanks Brian.
+csh 62 Now to do it again.
Joe is the man. I've been a long time sub of the two of you. it was great to see that smile on your face. congrats brother
+Adventure Time Outdoors It was great to finally get a coal.
You make it look so easy, I have to say I picked up more from this video than others thanks for posting.
+Timothy Ryan Fisher No, Joe makes it look easy.
Good job on your first bow drill fire! I saw how excited you were, your hands were shaking a little while you where transferring the ember.wish you the best of luck trying other methods of fire making!
+John Harmon It was a big moment. Joe was great for helping. I hope everyone that watches this video goes and subscribes to his channel.
Gives me hope I can do it.... Great tutorial video guys.... Keep up the great work....
+Jon LeGros Joe rocks.
Congratulations on you first bow drill fire. :)
+Old Pup It was so cool.
Great job! David from Ultimate Survival Tips does a great two part teaching on the bow drill. Mine worked the first time out. I only think his bow was short. It should be as long as your "throw". I love your honesty.
+David Barclay I met David at SHOT Show. He is a great guy!
+Survival On Purpose And he's a believer like us. Bless you and all your work. My channel Survival Geek to be up soon.
Good job Bryan, you've inspired me to try a bow drill ASAP
Sorry if I spelled your name wrong
+Tactical Patriot You actually got it right, which is unusual
Love God Love your channel Thank you Brian. You are the man.
+KK Prepper Nah, I'm just A man.
Congratulations Brother! I need to get to work on these friction fire methods and now you have inspired me to do so. Thanks Brian! I have been watching Joe for a few months now and he is great. I think that it is awesome when you guys merge like that. Thanks!
+Jon Cothran Yeah, Joe was very nice to help.
congrats bryan,, welcome to the ember club...
..bill
+billy joe denny Thanks.
Great job Brian. When I saw Bow Drill I wasn't sure it was the same channel. Then I said to myself, Survival on Purpose. Why the heck not. It is a great survival tool to know. Great video as always and I SUBBED Ferrel Woodcraft.
+Brett Steele You'll like his channel. And I am trying to get back to my roots and do more non review videos.
Glad to see you keep good friends around, lol. Really enjoyed your excitement over your accomplishment. I love your channel because you are so realistic and unassuming. Keep up the good work.
+KikoMonster Thanks. Yeah, I was pretty excited.
Thanks Brian.... you have given hope to the hopeless
+M. Myrick Joe did it. He is a great guy with a great channel. A hope you check him out and subscribe.
yep I did!
Awesome video! Congratulations on your first bow drill fire! Thank you for sharing.
+Agnos Junior it was fun
YAY!!! great job. Some things that help me is to keep the notch forward so it's easy to see, have the center of spindle a bit narrower than the ends so the string don't walk so much and make sure the wood is really dry. I see too many people try wood from river bottoms or off the ground.
+ArrowXDesign Thanks
rock on bryan!!! i think you were taught by one of the best.. great job and great vid!
+SCOOP DE DOOP Yes he is one of the best. I hope you subscribe to his channel.
Really useful. Thanks to both of you!
+Bob_the_Bomb Yes it was. Thanks to Joe.
Excellent job Bryan!
+Irish Zombie Nation It was all Joe.
thanks brain your the best thanks to feral woodcraft also you are a friction fire king.
+Tadhg Strand Joe is the man
man, that was great. thank you guys. tried it for the first time, and got an ember. I was as excited as you. never expected it to work
+Jimmy Bullock first time huh? Got a coal huh? I could hate you. :-)
+Survival On Purpose beginners luck haha great conditions here in the mountains of southern new mexico. and great instructions from you guys. not sure if this makes any difference, buy I did clean the burnt off my spindle after I did the burn out. seemed to provide better friction
congratulations buddy, I'm happy to see you finally nail down that pesky bow drill fire. this was an amazing video and highly educational, think I'll actually give this a shot now. I've never been keen on the thought of this fire method but between you both it seems like a more achievable goal. FAT WOOD FOR THE WIN!
+Outlawstar79 you should give a shot
Think I will
great video. skills are so important. they transfer over to different tasks.
glad you were able to get it to work so well for you.
+Adam Craig It was all Joe. He is a great teacher. I hope you check out his channel.
thank you for this video. it is always good to learn from other people's experiences. thanks for sharing yours.
+jmax7733 Thanks for watching. Please check out Joe's channel and say thanks.

+Ty Lockwood Give it a whirl
congrats man,I know the failure and then the feeling of getting the first flame, good job and great video
+Nate H it was a milestone in my life :-)
Never heard the tip on the size of the spindle. Great stuff ! Also, seeing Joe and hearing your voice really freaked me out for a moment......Just thought you guys should know !!!....PAPA DUKES
+john rossi Thanks.
+john rossi LOL! Thanks John!
Great move Joe is one cool dude. 👍🐾🐾
+Drew Lucero Like a cucumber.
+Drew Lucero +Survival On Purpose
And I suddenly have the theme song for Veggie Tales running through my head... LOL
Yesterday was my first try with a bow drill. Made more smoke with my bearing hand than the hearth board. Now I have an idea what i was doing wrong. Excited to try again. Thanks for the video.
+Chipper66 You can do it.
+Survival On Purpose SUCCESS!!! Using slightly better technique, and cheating just a little as Joe suggested, I was finally able to make fire. I took a wheel off my son's skateboard and used that for less friction. Using a skateboard wheel and bearings to make fire. Who knew? Blazing fire in no time. Thank you again for your videos. They encourage me to keep trying.
Joe is the man and good job
+kantill Yes he is. Thanks.
Hey Brian, been a subscriber for a long time to you and feralwood craft, excellent channels, a big thank u for all u do from Wales
+Paul Bassett Thank you!
I do know exactly how you feel brilliant video brian as always
+Mr Alsop Aw shucks.

+Naj ruQwI i'm sure you will do much better than I did
Really awesome info on this video, some very useful tips for sure. Thanks for sharing Bryan!
+Silver Maple The thanks go to Joe, He was kind enough to take the time to help out.
Congrats Brian!!!!
+snaponjohn100 Thanks.
its a good feeling to get your first ember. took me over a year to get my first ember. pine bark can work good too for the bearing block if you can find a good thick piece or layer it. and also pine spindle on pine hearth board seems to work good. (looks like you have plenty of pine around you) if you do want to try pine for your spindle and board use the dead branches of pine for both they need to be solid, dry and resin free im here in florida and here pine are everywhere and humidity is terrible but im confident that i could get fire with all pine parts except for string to make bow drill fire. yucca leaf for string. not sure if you have yucca but it makes an excellent string if you can get it and make it.
+booshwaa2 Cool. I will have to try some pine now.
long time subscriber to both channels i really enjoyed this have bin doing bow drills for years but this is a great teaching tool for beginners and no i didnt get it on my first few tries ether
+ED MaCallum I hope this helps a lot of folks as much as it did me.
Woo-hoo!!! you looked like a kid in a candy shop! Excellent video!! Uber fun!!
+RobertB Santistevan It was indeed.
+Survival On Purpose I am going to try this tomorrow, and even video it . Proof succeed or fail, we shall see.

+Tony Leroy It was very cool

+Jeramy Lawlor Finally.
Congrats on you're Success !! I feel your pain !
+Brick Au Thanks.
now start practicing on forest sourced material and different woods i agree a Bic and faro rod is smart pocket carry but this skill on many variables is a skill that WILL save lives
+embarado smithing and woodcraft It definitely has the potential. And I agree 100% Once you grasp the basics, then the real fun begins.
awesome video brother both you and mr joe
+Modernbushcraft Thanks.

+Ernest Chaffins Thanks.
That was awesome thanks guys
+Paul X The thanks go to Joe.
Back when I was in Scouting (as a Asst Scout Master) here in Indiana we called the pieces of the kit: the thunderhead, the spindle, the floorboard and the bow. The technique I learned was to put your arm "under" your knee, but what works right!??...
MYbe I'll try that technique
Brian you get you wrist right up there under your knee joint and (for me) it'll help stabilize your arm.. Toy with it, it works hey, if not stay with Joe's technique! God Bless sir, Mark..
Hey Brian, I have to ask you this. How do you create your store?
Outstanding!
+CO45422 The thanks go to Joe
Nice job!!!
+Scott Sweet I give the credit to Joe. All the little tips add up. I hope he gets a bunch of new subscribers because he has a great channel
+Survival On Purpose right on. I sub'd right away.
Well done Brian. Congrats. Probably it could have saved you several years of frustration if you consulted Jeo a couple of years ago..:-)
+KnifeCollector031 The Netherlands (Messenhobby) True.
a good source for variables is far north bushcraft and survival and David West channels only reason i don't include my self is i don't have vids up on this YET
That is a big deal! I want to do that now! Congratulations!
+dudmart Check out Joe's channel. He can help you.
Awesoome! That looks like a fun accomplishment.
Where's that skunk though....
+TheZomb0t Skunk? What skunk?
Joe, how do I contact the Hotbox folks you mentioned about their bow drill?
great vid man
It was fun.
well done sir, if u don't mind me asking, video quality is really good, what camera do u use
+1crispypickle Canon vixia HFR 40
A bow drill fire is on my list for success but so far I have not been. I have tried. It is way harder than some people make it look.
+Timothy Ryan Fisher I completely agree.
nice tip man!!!
+Yuri Sierra Thanks to Joe.
Survival On Purpose yeah just subscribed to him, awesome channel :)
Nice!
+Steve H Yep it was.
a wise man knows a bow drill warms him 3 times first when he makes the set 2nd when he makes the coal with it and finally when he gets fire with said coal CONGRATS an other tool in the mental tool box
+embarado smithing and woodcraft I've heard a few different iterations of that quote and I like that one the best lol
Would Pine be a good wood to use?
+TraditionalBlackPowder You are asking the wrong guy ;-) But Matt Graham told me at SHOT Show to try some really dry pine so I'm sure it would. Matt is the real deal.
+Survival On Purpose Thanks.
way to go.
+Tim Cushman Thanks to Joe
Thanx:-D
