    "and that's why this lock was fairly easy to pick." Easy for LPL! Not for normal people. Not even for skilled normal people. I'm starting to think we are all looking at one of the greatest Lock-Pickers of all time.

    I was driving Lyft last night, and when my passengers and I passed beneath the I-405 Fremont bridge in NW Portland, OR, we saw a suspicious character hovering around the door of a large, white SUV.
    "That looks suspicious," I said.
    "Yeah," agreed the frontseat passenger. I turned right onto NW Thurman, but the road was closed 100 feet ahead. I backed up to NW 15th to try another road.
    The passenger peered into the right rearview mirror when I backed up. "Yep, he's breaking into it..."
    I thought of you, smiled, and drove on, chuckling.

  • @huxleypig69
    @huxleypig69 5 років тому

    This is interesting take on the DD principle; the key would suggest that there are more discs than there are. The last disc in the lock is a fixed 5 disc and it has a large space behind it that the 0 cut on the tip of the key goes in. I am guessing that this is for key retention as when rotated 90 degrees the 0 cut will be trapped behind the fixed 5 disc. And yet there is no actual 0 disc at the rear, it is driven from the front. So it would be possible to tension that fixed 5 disc, if you wanted.

    I suspect the shoddy "rebranding" is because the lock was made after hours as a "ghost run": a UK firm designed and ordered the lock and someone at the factory made a bunch of extras to sell off the books. The "rebranding" only needs to be good enough to hide it from the original firm in the Amazon listing. In a slightly backhanded way, someone out there must appreciate the design.

    • @Marionette_Doll
      @Marionette_Doll 5 років тому +1

      Locks don't have to be perfectly strong, just strong enough to not be the weakest point of failure. On a house, burglars aren't likely to try picking when they can just break through a window, for instance.
      Most commercial door locks are good enough, and even a Masterlock is a visual deterrent on a toolbox, though there's nothing wrong with going up a step or two for your own peace of mind.
      That said, please don't give money to Masterlock or their subsidiaries, if only for a personal "vote with your wallet" reason from the locksport community.

    Is there a reason that all the disks need to be rotated clock wise first or can it be rotated the other way or does that not work? Forgive me I don’t have anylocks like this one yet. Also FYI love the channel!

    I am a novice lock security penetrator but given the spring detent on the shackle would this be subject to kinetic bypass ala McnallyOfficial?

    I have an Abloy Protec2 on my front door. Have you done any Abloy locks, or the Protec? Any thoughts on it?

      He has commented briefly on high security door locks, and pretty much what he said is that good locks on doors only provide a small amount of security compared to the price because someone trying to break and enter probably won't try to pick the deadbolt, they will find a different way in that is faster and less skill intensive (break a window, kick down the door, etc.). If your house is otherwise more protected than most (steel door and door frame, reinforced windows, etc.) then maybe the deadbolt is the weak link in your security, but otherwise it isn't worth the high cost

      @@kevinwells9751 I've picked and (mostly) bumped my way into more houses than I can count. I literally don't remember how many there were. And my house was bump keyed into before twice... by police. Little known fact: most of the police in my area have bump keys on them. My bump keys were my primary source of income for years. So I wasn't asking about that aspect of it... since I already know for a fact that the "they'll just kick down a door or break a window" idea is 100% objectively false.
      I'm just curious how easily pick-able Abloys, and specifically the Protec2, is... from someone who is a better picker than I am.
      Before you comment: Yes, police DO enter without a warrant... they do it ALL THE TIME. They say the door was open and they heard something. It's common practice.

      @@I_leave_mean_comments Protec II is an awesome lock. I am the only one to have publicly picked this lock. However, it has been opened non-destructively in the past many, many times (not by me, in secret). They can't be bumped. Thieves won't be opening it.

    Do these disc locks tension in the back? If you didnt have that awesome tool😊 what would you be using or does it have to be a dedicated disc lock pick?? Nice vid and picking, thanks👍

      They make similar picking tools that are cheap (Chinese) but they have their limitations. Watch the first video from the pick build series and I think they discuss the issues with the Chinese picks

    What stops someone popping out the plastic and drilling downwards through the shackle, then down into the retaining screw to release the front? Doesn't seem like a lot of material to go through.

    • @krpajda

      If you are already drilling through the shackle why bother with the core?

    • @gsuberland
      @gsuberland 5 років тому

      @@krpajda Because you're only putting a small hole through the shackle. Much less work to bore a small hole in it than to drill the whole thing.

    Can you make a video on the different locks you WOULD recommend, based on type, purpose and price range?

  • @300DBenz
    @300DBenz 5 років тому

    A set screw is all that holds that core face in?!?
    A ratchet, a square drive socket, and a large bolt extractor would have it apart in seconds.

    How did you know that the last disk wasn't rotating? I mean, it could just already be part of the lock and not a disk, that's why it wouldn't rotate!!
    I don't know if I could make myself clear, but hope you can understand what I'm trying to ask, as I'm curious as how you can differenciate one thing from the other with no view of it!!
