I am currently looking into whether to go to conservatoire or uni so thanks for this!! 💚 I am a classical saxophist and also an active composer so I am unsure as which route I should go for. If I go to uni I would be able to do a variation of these however I'm a lot more interested in the practical side of music. My worry is that at conservatoire I would have to choose to do a degree in composition or a degree in my instrument which I am torn between! Do you have any advice?
Hi Nina! Conservatoire life is definitely a lot more practical. My advice would be to go open days and have a chat to the tutors/students to see what each course is like and what opportunities there are for you to play your instrument/compose. I know at RNCM there are definitely opportunities for you to play your instrument even if its not your principle study- although certain things may be limited. Also, have a think about where you might want to go with your career in the future, as this will help you in the right direction. Whatever you decide to choose- don’t stop doing the other thing you enjoy! (Eg if you choose composition don’t stop playing! :)) once you’ve had a look around, go with whatever your gut tells you to do! Go for whichever course you will enjoy the most, as its going to be a few years of your life! :D I hope this helps- let me know if you have anymore questions.
