No just some dumb speculation over a dumb movie with vague motives... maybe I’d believe you if they hand shown the bowl cut guy getting his but from killing the cop in the beginning.... in a scene that NEVER would have happened IRL.... so yeah there is no motive, it’s either personal satisfaction I.e. him getting his nut OR him playing a game of chance... the movie tries to establish both as motives which are conflicting and make his character dumb, not scary or intimidating at all and just makes the movie suck more than it already did... god what a horrible movie

@@MerrieMann to be frank, it seems unlikely that this would be a practical concern for Chigurh.
this information doesn't really narrow his whereabouts down very much, and it's a bit of a stretch to assume the old guy would even remember it. he probably has a hundred of such conversations every week, and barely listens to the answers.
i think it was more of a matter of principle for Chigurh, who simply loathes talking for talking's sake. he's a human Terminator and hates everything that doesn't serve some goal or some valid rule. so he's more like "you're asking me this, clearly there is a purpose behind it, what was your purpose then, and if you can't stand up for it, you're garbage", i don't think it he was genuinely concerned in the context of cops.

      You missed the point entirely
He starts being a hypocrite on purpose to show the clerk just how nosey his questions were at the beginning. Whilst conversational, they can be threatening to a person on edge, and the clerk's presence initially threatens Anton's as Anton tries to keep his trail clean.
If Anton can't satisfy the clerk's answer- he'll know something is off. Anton, knowing this, takes control ot the situation, and later presses the clerk with similar lines of questioning as a means of showing him just how threatening you can be by asking basic information.
The clerk didn't initially mean any harm by the conversation, but by refusing to let go his inquiry, Anton let him know that he's got no power in his life, and that the questions he asks come with a heavy price if you live in the middle of nowhere.
Anton DOES believe he's in control of his own destiny, and uses his principles as a means of securing his ends. It's only when the random drunk driver hits him at the end of the film does he then realize that he too, is a passenger in life.

  • @tren380
    @tren380 6 місяців тому +1

Here is my analysis of the similarities and differences to some fun Greek myths:
    1. The Meeting Between Odysseus and Polyphemus:
Similarities: In Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus and his men enter the cave of the Cyclops Polyphemus, seeking food and shelter. Similar to the gas station scene, they find themselves trapped in a dangerous situation with a powerful, unpredictable entity. The outcome hinges on quick thinking and a gamble, where Odysseus uses his cunning to escape with his life.
Differences: While the violence in the "No Country" scene is sudden and driven by chance, the encounter with Polyphemus is planned and driven by revenge. Additionally, the focus is on Odysseus's strategic mind and resourcefulness, rather than the clerk's perspective.
    2. The Story of Oedipus:
Similarities: Oedipus unknowingly fulfills a prophecy to kill his father and marry his mother, highlighting the inescapable nature of fate and the tragic consequences of ignorance. This theme of fate influencing events and the individual's limited control resonates with the clerk's feeling of helplessness against the unstoppable force of Chigurh.
Differences: The story of Oedipus is grand and epic, while the "No Country" scene is grounded in a realistic setting. Additionally, Oedipus's actions are driven by an unknown prophecy, whereas the clerk is simply caught in the crossfire of Chigurh's violence.
    3. The Myth of Sisyphus:
Similarities: Sisyphus is condemned by the gods to eternally roll a boulder uphill, only to have it roll back down again. This myth reflects the theme of futility and the struggle against an overwhelming force, similar to the clerk's feeling of powerlessness against Chigurh's relentless pursuit.
Differences: Sisyphus's punishment is a direct consequence of his actions, while the clerk is an innocent bystander. Additionally, the myth focuses on individual defiance, whereas the scene in "No Country" emphasizes the randomness and inevitability of violence.

This scene is a good life lesson in not talking out of your autopilot, stock boring answers bin. Listen to people when they talk to you, even if it seems like drivel or the minutiae of life. I think you do not understand the meaning of this scene. He is testing him if he actually says things how they are, if he knows what they mean to him and actually if he knows that he is alive. Do you see the presence that emits from the guy with the brown hair? It is because he knows what he talks about. He pointed out that "marrying into it" because of giving him the chance to clarify the situation by saying for example "No, this was my decision, I did not marry into it, I was destined to be with this woman" or something like this.
Therefore he ended up forcing him to say heads or tails. Because in his eyes someone in a mindstate like him is similar to being already dead. That is why he in his merciless way of perceiving the world would have no problem killing someone like this. He forced him to be (what he considers to be) "conscious" by making this coin toss about his life.
This scene is a critic of our society which does not know what it is talking about by not actually thinking for themselves.

Anton just believes that things are supposed to happen and he justifies his actions behind it. He felt the need to kill this man and used the coin to justify if the man guessed wrong.
Part of the movie is that Anton is a hypocrite. Like when he kills the wife at the end of the movie. He asks her to call a side of the coin, and she goes “There’s no coin/fate. It’s just you.”
