”I crossed mountains for education, but the hardest journey is the one that keeps me apart from home.”
Becoming a teacher was my biggest dream when I was young, and now, as I mark my 25th year in this profession at the Tibetan Children's Village School, I feel an immense sense of pride and fulfillment. This school has not only educated me but also shaped me into the person I am today. When I first arrived from Tibet, crossing the Himalayas with nothing but hope for a better education in exile, I never imagined that one day I would be respected for my service and the journey that brought me here.
I often share my story with my students, reminding them how fortunate they are. The exile community has transformed significantly-what was once a struggle for survival has now become a life of opportunities. Back then, we didn’t dream of branded clothes; we cherished what little we had and focused on learning about our culture and traditions. There was a deep sense of Tibetan identity within us, a fire that kept us going despite the hardships.
This school was everything for us. We had no one else in India, so our bond with it ran deep. Some of my students even visit Tibet, saving up their own pocket money, which reminds me of how strong that connection still is.
Yet, the greatest regret of my life is the time I missed with my own parents. It has been decades since I last saw them, and like many from my generation, I left Tibet not knowing it would mean a lifetime apart from family.
