OMG the catalog is totally worth diving into! Caravan are incredible! Their most accessible album would be For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night. Why don't you start with a banger - their first song on the album "Memory Lain/Headloss" The second side of In The Land of Grey and Pink is an epic called "9 Feet Underground" - one of the best prog 'epics' to be heard! There's a ton to unpack with Caravan. You cant help but smile when you listen to them! I'd love to see more reactions of this incredible band. This song was a wistful one, but they've got TONS of substance. ps The sound you were talking about is the signature Canterbury sound. They ran keyboards through guitar feeds to create fuzzy tones. Dave Sinclair on keys is incredible. I can't gush enough about these guys. Go for Memory Lain/Headloss and that'll have you wanting more for sure!
This was a British progressive rock band that came out in the 70s. There was a bunch of early prog bands that had top level musicianship, that you might appreciate, Biz. Yes ( I'm guessing you've already done a few reactions to them? ) King Crimson Camel ( check out their song "Lunar Sea" ) Can Tangerine Dream Ozric Tentacles
Caravan is in a certain niche of mid-60's, pre-progressive rock called Canterbury that combined folk, jazz and psychedelic influences and great musicianship. I especially love Caravan's album Cunning Stunts. Other Canterbury artists to check out include Soft Machine and National Health, and the solo and collaborative projects that came from these bands. I also recommend a German band called Kraan and the track "Nam Nam." Thanks!
This is one of my favorite albums, especially the B side. Soft machine 5th for sure. Coliseum too. It's a pretty particular sound, maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but most people who like this sound really like it😊 They used an electric organ with guitar effects. Unique sound.
The second solo that starts at about 2:57 (or 3:32 in this video) is a fuzz organ. That just means an organ is hooked up with guitar pedals to produce a distorted* or fuzzy sound. I know what you meant when you said electric violin, though. It really does sound like some electric stringed instrument. Nonetheless, that solo is incredible. It takes you through the full dreamscape that the rest of the song sets up. * Distortion is achieved by overdriving the vacuum tubes of a guitar amplifier, or for you simpletons, by sending too strong a signal to the electronic component that shapes the sound. Because this signal is too strong, the electrical components cannot capture the highs and lows of its waveform, leading to one that is more complex than that of a fundamental waveform (a non-distorted waveform). Since the more complex waveform consists of multiples of the fundamental tone (this result of multiples of the fundamental frequency is found in the Fourier series), a harmonic is created. Yet it is a clipped harmonic, which isn't a smooth waveform. Thus, you get the warmth of a harmonic, but the grittiness of a jagged waveform. Combining these two qualities leads to the fuzzy sound typical of distortion.
Always quite liked them in an English whimsy sort of way. I'm from near their time and place and knew folk who had been in Canterbury Scene groups. Some of that scene were more pub rock and proto-punk. British punk came out and that was for me. Brinsley Schwarz then Nick Lowe were fun. From the Canterbury Scene, I did go on to like Kevin Ayers and to love Robert Wyatt and, associated with it, Stomu Yamash'ta who used some of the CS musicians

I've loved this tune for as long as I can remember, the instrumental solos are on the piano and then the fuzztone organ.
Caravan is a great band….. the musicianship is fantastic!
