We Chinese people are spiritual, but not devoted to religions since the ancient time, may be due to the cultural awakening in spring and autumn period (chun qiu 春秋). A lot of Chinese believe in gods, even which are from different religions at the same time, such as gods/saints from Buddhism and Taoism. Since the ancient time, most Chinese people with religious belief do not have the concept of belonging to one religion, such as define as Christians define them as Christians.
Is the Han folk religion the most widespread and more popular? Is there even such a thing as an ethnic Han religion? And if there is, this one would be the oldest right? Older than Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism.
@Jacky Phantom chuang li was not talking about Buddhism. but referring that many different "religions" and beliefs have influenced Chinese culture and beliefs. from my personal experience, Buddhism or Chinese religion is very heavily dependant on your own families traditions, and religion is more of a practice of culture rather than belief. so even though formally Buddhism "isn't supposed to have gods" (which i disagree with) in Chinese culture the influence of other dominant beliefs has influenced Buddhism.
@Jacky Phantom oh so your now the pope of buddhism and all Chinese religion. What do you want me to do next kiss your hand.🙄
@@Jackson-nr2mw What do you mean you disagree that Buddhism's not supposed to have gods? That's one of the underlying tenants of Buddhism. However, if you're arguing that Chinese Buddhism over time incorporated local deities and familial piety in order easily spread their ideas, then yes. But, the fundamental position of Buddha is that there are no such thing as gods or central religious authority figures.
@@SandeepMukkamala im just saying no one should inforce their own beliefs on to others regardless of the religion and that everyone has the right to believe in what they want.

I always saw videos about Chinese religion which only contains Taoism Confucianism and Buddhism, then what about Shenism? (Chinese FOLK RELIGION) As a Malaysian Chinese I'm very shocked that a lot of videos aren't detailed very much, or perhaps Northerners don't have any deities like much in Southern China?
A Malak The main religion is Islam, however there are Christian, Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism (Chinese folk religion) etc. Most of the chinese descendants aren't going to assimilate with Islam, we have our freedom to preserve our beliefs, and also the choice to change too.
Sherman Stanley Christian isn't a China religion
Black 9 I didn't said that too.
Ramadan Mubarak from Israel :)
Shenism, is very misleading name. It literally means Godnism. it makes no sense to name a religion this ways. even in mainland China, many religions practice are mixed and inter-influenced. it is the western tradition to seek the totalism and monopoly destination in culture (or idealism). For a mature civilization, we need not to follow the childish and parochial way of thinking.
Every time I hear about dynasties falling, it makes me feel bad. Thousands if not millions of people die in war or under harsh conditions just to prop up an emperor who gets overthrown 30 years later. Then the whole process repeats.
Buddhism is best
Christianity
Families in Malaysia have several gods in their households they are very traditional Chinese, can anybody name a few of the gods they worship?
I am Chinese Malaysian. Actually the Gods that we worshiping are family oriented. Each family chooses the Gods that they believe to worship, same thing happens in Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and etc Chinese places. Anyway, there still have some common Gods which we worship on our family altar:
1. Sky / Sky God (English world names it as Heaven worship, but it sounds weird to us, coz we don't worship Heaven. In Chinese, the word for this God means "Sky"). The altar for this God is a pavilion shape of cubic, locates at the entrance gate of the house. This God has no form. It oversee this world. It will punish the people who doing the bad things or committed crime. Chinese Emperors claiming themselves as the sons of this God and they are getting the mandate from this God to rule China.
2. GuanYin / Avalokitesvara. The most popular God from Buddhism. She is more popular than Buddha in Chinese world, you will see her statue in nearly all Buddhist temples and Chinese Folks religions temples. Usually her statue will be put on the middle position on family altar inside the house. We worship her for family protection and also to seek the help from her.
3. Ancestor. Usually this is just a wooden board which carved with our family name which used to represent our ancestor. It is put on the family altar too.
4. Ground God. Usually this is just a wooden board which carved with the words "Ground God". It is put on the bottom of the family altar.
5. GuanYu (Chinese war hero, who lived during Three Kingdom period). His statue is a long black beard general in armor suit. We worship him for protection purpose.
6. CaiShen. Fortune God. We worship him with the wish of getting good fortune.
Laxmi maybe? many south east Asian country's believe in her and she is said to be the wife of a form of buddha.
@Jacky Phantom Hes Malaysian Chinese because Malaysian Chinese Names are little Different from China
@@shekeal2810 laxmi is not Chinese god..its Indian god.
Only Jesus Christ
in 4:20, Did Buddhism in China really give rise to Taoism religion? I always believed that Taoism was in China in about the same time or before Buddhism was in India, let alone way before Buddhism came to China.
You are right. Taoism was in China in about the same time or before Buddhism was in India, let alone way before Buddhism came to China.
Thank you for that confirmation. I remember comparing the dates displayed in the Victorian and Albert museum in London on Taoist and Buddhism art, and that was my conclusion. It still isn't clear to me which came first; Hinduism or Taoism. From what I can tell they both came at almost within 100 years from each other.
@@wg4476 From what I understand Taoism as a philosophy started in 6th century BCE often attributed to its founder Lao Zi or Lao Tzu. The various beliefs and mythologies in which it originated from obviously formed much earlier. Hinduism, as far as I know, didn't have a specific founder but is believed to have formed by fusion of various cultures and religions around 15th century BCE.

Nice Awesome video
Chinese religions are very original. Unlike Christian or Islam. The majority people in China still believe in ghost worship and Ancestral worship. However, the main ideology in China focuses more on the people instead of gods. This is humanism. One consequence of Chinese society is that once Religious powers become too influential, secular majority will always suppress it. This happened not just one time, but many many times in Chinese history. So, from my perspective, most people in China since Zhou dynasty are secular(not atheism).
Wow I had never heard before of Shanti!

can you do street interview on how young generation feel about religious beliefs and if they adhere to it ?
Chinese, no matter older or younger generation are heavily influenced by Communists, if they are educated, then they are more likely to be secular.
People outside mainland China that are not influenced by Communists mainly adopts sage worship or ancestral worship. There is no systematic religion.
Thank you for making this, you just saved my history grade.
五代十国:five generations (cus it lasted roughly 50 years) and 10 kingdoms (because of the many minor states that fought after the collapse of Tang, is a very interesting period and to some extent resembles China today, where different governments acclaim to be the true kingdom that should govern all of China.
Taoism, has already fully developed during the Zhou dynasty (1046 BC-256 BC). It is one of the earliest religions found in China.
Taoism is at least more than 35000 years old, probably nearly 5000 years old.

The Chinese do not call Confucius and their ancestors gods, but call them teachers or great ancestors. Taoism and Confucianism have far more influence in China than gods, so Chinese gods are their ancestors. They don’t need foreign gods, because Chinese people The ancestral beliefs are very loyal and protect the ancient Chinese culture and land.

To all Chinese reading this, you guys should actually thank Ashoka the great for Buddhism. He was the reason why Buddhism spread across Asia from India.
But why didnt it spread in india??

What know about shiv third eye of shiv on up the yellow river
Which is most popular religion in China
it really depends on how you define a religion, Confucianism for example doesn't really address the supernatural in and of itself (which allows you to make an argument that it is more of a humanistic philosophy as opposed to a full religious doctrine) but does see the exploration of such concepts as potentially useful- this distinction is something Western societies don't really have an analog for- belief systems in the west are generally all-encompassing with regard to societal, spiritual obligations and as well as expectations regarding the afterlife . From what I could gather, the main "religions" of China serve different purposes with Confucianism being how you interact within society and how society should be structured, Taoism being you're personal well-being on Earth while Buddhist thought informs you on the afterlife so they arguably have about the same number of practitioners with some people leaning more heavily on one of them than the other
