"Leaves of Gold" - Lord of the Rings Online

- I wrote this song because I felt so inspired by this part of Tolkien's prose: "Behind him stood Galadriel, tall and white; a circlet of golden flowers was in her hair, and in her hand she held a harp, and she sang. Sad and sweet was the sound of her voice in the cool clear air..." The text follows with several stanzas of poetry, which I set to music. Lots of talented people are featured in this recording. Vocals by Jenny Jordan Frogley. Theorbo (that's a bass lute) by Sterling Price. Viola di Gamba by Patricia Zwick. Harp by Janet Peterson. Guitar by Rich Dixon. I played the piano and rounded out the rest of the arrangement with virtual instruments. It was recorded by Steve Lerud at Lakeview Recording, I then I mixed the tune at HUGEsound. I've populated the video with images from the game world, trying to do justice to the poetry. Some are stunning!
Thanks for listening and for your comments!
Big fan of your work! Loved learning that you were behind the QfG 5 soundtrack! I still listen to that soundtrack even after 20+ years!
I sang of leaves, of leaves of gold, and leaves of gold there grew:
Of wind I sang, a wind there came and in the branches blew.
Beyond the Sun, beyond the Moon, the foam was on the Sea,
And by the strand of Ilmarin there grew a golden Tree.
Beneath the stars of Ever-eve in Eldamar it shone,
In Eldamar beside the walls of Elven Tirion.
There long the golden leaves have grown upon the branching years,
While here beyond the Sundering Seas now fall the Elven-tears.
O Lórien! The Winter comes, the bare and leafless Day;
The leaves are falling in the stream, the River flows away.
O Lórien! Too long I have dwelt upon this Hither Shore
And in a fading crown have twined the golden elanor.
But if of ships I now should sing, what ship would come to me,
What ship would bear me ever back across so wide a Sea?
I think _FOREVER AUTUMN,_ fits this video quite well too. 👍👍& 10⭐
This is the most wholesome and beautifull song/track in LOTRO, It really holds the game's essence. I wish It played in-game instead of playing in the credits.
I ***STILL*** have trouble finding the last talon out in Lothlorien sometimes. So I get a chance to listen to the music more while I'm dodging around invisible lynxes that I disturb in my searching for that last item on the list...
The music you composed for LOTRO played a huge part in setting the ambiance, and is what makes me very nostalgic thinking about the game.
+DrNiveks Thanks! I really loved working on that game. What a playground to compose in...
+Chance Thomas I wish you would return to it and make more music not only for the upcoming new regions, but also some of the older ones too that clearly show a drop in the quality that we were used to in Shadows of Angmar, Moria, and Riders of Rohan.
LotRO is the only such recreation of Tolkien's legendary Middle-earth; it is a shame and a loss for it to be bereft of your music. You did a most excellent work in bringing in it the sound of Middle-earth.
My most favorite pieces that now spring to mind are the one that plays at the walls of Moria, and the Trollshaws music.
+The World of Middle-earth || Wow, such a beautiful comment! Thank you! My time in LOTRO was definitely one of the highlights of my creative life. Loved every minute of it!
@@HUGEchance This music became part of many of us, even belonging to Just a game. I Will never Thank you enough for Lone Lands theme and Ered Luin (Moria then, i cant say anything fitting to the best expansion of the game, It was magical), i could Go anywhere in the world and they would still make the perfect mood for my lifes journey. You and Di Gregorio ARE Very fond to my repertoir, never thought that a game's music could bring me as close to tears as Bruckner, Sibelius, Holst and Thaickovsky. THANK YOU for being part of my farytalish childhood, its been a long time already ❤❤❤❤ 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
PS: Song of the Dwarves IS still the MOST ICONIC track of the game in my opinion, its simple Barukh Khazad but It never tires me even after so.many years. BARUK KHAZAD, KHAZAD AIMENU!
Love the Music as always Chance! Keep it up! I hope you will keep making Great Music for LOTRO and everything else! :D
Thank you so much! I actually retired from composing back in February. I'm working on my memoirs now, if you can believe it!
Simply amazing. Thanks for sharing, Chance! Also, glad that one of my screenshots (Warden among swans) helped to paint the picture for the song. Keep the music coming! =)
I've been wondering who the other characters were! (my char is the one sitting on the bench :)) was amazed to see her
beautiful piece of music :)
Absolutely beautiful, Chance. I've been adoring your music since Quest for Glory V, and this piece is one of my favorites. Thank you so much for your creative genius - the lyrics may touch the heart, but your music moves the soul.
Beautiful!
Vnice!
Beautiful.
Another teaser that I'd like to hear the full version of, is "Love of a Maiden Fair and Pure". It's a simple motif but the different ways you treated it is amazing, and I'd like to hear more of it.
+Whiz of Oz - Thanks so much! I'll have to dig around and see if I can find the full version of that tune.
Please do! Looking forward to it.
Just Amazing :D
I've never heard the full version.
Amazing job as always Mr. Thomas!
Such beautiful elven music!
Wonderful comment. Thank you Lorene. The lyrics from this song always inspired me. Still do. Sad and sweet...!
You're most welcome, Mr. Thomas! 😊 It is great to hear from your point of view of what inspires you as a fellow artist in the Creative Arts realm. 😄
As a writer, I often find inspiration in your music, in The LotR film soundtracks, and in The Elder Scrolls soundtracks. All these artists & pieces... I love how they take me far away into another world. It inspires & helps a lot as I write and imagine worlds. 😌
I have tons of respect for writers. I've only had one book published - a textbook - but writing that book was the hardest thing I've done as a professional. Lots of respect to you!
😂 Yeah, it's no easy walk. Revisions are endless, too! And a textbook, you say? Interesting! May I ask, what was it about or what subject was it on? 😮
Yep, a textbook! No surprise, it's about composing music for video games. You can check it out on my personal website: www.ChanceThomas.com - or on the publisher website: www.crcpress.com/Composing-Music-for-Games-The-Art-Technology-and-Business-of-Video-Game/Thomas/p/book/9781138021419
So lovely - I hope that we will get to hear more of Chance Thomas' work in LOTRO's next expansion.
sublime... my face cried..
Beautiful. Just awe-inspiring. I wish LoTRO was in a different state right now. Maybe they would've gotten you to compose the soundtrack for Helm's Deep if things were different. Rohan was an amazing experience with your music.
what do you mean by that?
Ever since I heard the part of it on your site I've been wanting to hear the rest of it. This is great!
Beautiful

Wow!
Amazing !!! :)
So beautiful :)
