- Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony, and Jason Bonham have announced a Summer 2024 Tour called The Best of All Worlds. The music is said to center around Van Halen as somewhat of a tribute to Eddie Van Halen who died in October 2020. Here's Satriani playing Mean Street from Van Halen's Fair Warning album.

Cool the best.🎉
Joe admitting he cant play like EVH is a level of honesty and humbleness that is missing in most guitarists
Yep. you even saw it when this video came out tons of Tim Henson ripoffs hating on Satriani. They think there is only one way to play and its whatever is flavour of the month.
Yeah, Joe and Steve Vai are like that; both brilliant but they’d admit they could never play like Eddie
But at the same time, could Eddie play everything of Joe's, idk.
Steve Vai said he took guitar lessons from Joe when he was young.
Eddie is and was over rated. Eddie was all fancy licks. His playing lacks substance, unlike Randy Rhoads in the same time period. I'll put up Blizzard of Oz and Diary of a Madman and against any 2 Van Halen albums with Eddie's playing. Don't get me wrong, Eddie was an amazing guitar playing.
Satriani is a legend in his own right.
No doubt!!!
100%. Hell he taught Steve Vai how to play.
@@clintbunas7415and Kirk Hammett
Oh Satriani’s a phenomenal player, no doubt, but I’d argue at least one of his students went on to be even better.
@@MusicissuperiorEVHROX316 it’s every teacher’s dream for their student to surpass them.
Just goes to show Eddie’s rhythm playing was no joke.
That ain’t rhythm , that’s double tapping with natural harmonics and a slap technique… it’s just the intro, not a rhythm part… but yes, EVH was a bad bad man on the axe.. and it does truly go to show you how good he was when even Satch is having trouble playing it lol
@@davidvied2507 the opening rhythmic tapping section of the intro - the part that Satch is struggling to play in the video - is 100% rhythm.
…or at least it’s supposed to be if Satch were to actually play it right. lol
Nobody did a shuffle feel like EVH. There are a million incredible guitarists out there, but he had a truly unique rhythmic sensibility that no one can quite duplicate.
@@fairwarning007 Hell yeah . Even Eddies solos were super rhythmic .He was the king of swing .
What’s funny and I think most people might realize is that I’m pretty sure that this isn’t the first time Joe has tried to play that and he looks kinda silly in his attempt. You have to remember, this song was out back in 1981 and there must be hundreds of thousands of axe men who have played this, some perhaps had success playing it and some just could never quite get it. Joe for all his abilities can’t quite measure up
Mean street was on a different level that album was insane probably the heaviest one they released
Alex Van Halen thinks so too...
Unchained is an insane tune.
Probably my favorite song of all from them
The album is Fair Warning.
IMO it's the best one that they ever put out. With Roth or Hagar...
My favorite album of all time Fair Warning ❤❤❤❤
I love that Joe can admit that it ain't as easy as some people think. Still giving him an A for it!
Absolutely NOBODY thinks Van Halen is easy to play
Satriani is humble. I respect his talent and attitude.
I’m also thinking he may be pandering a bit. Joe is too technically proficient to not be able to knock something out of the park
@@suburbanindie Trust me theres a whole shit load of Tim Henson wannabes out there who think that EVH is way below them. I have met a bunch of em myself - and they never play anything of substance.
@@ScottCheg Van Halen is only good because at heart he's a rhythm guitarist (yes read that again).
Everything is in perfect time and serves a purpose. It seems like the "virtuosos" today just vomit on a fretboard
Mean Streets. Still remember popping Fair Warning into my boom box and having that come roaring out. Those were the days.
Tuesday May 12 1981 Halifax Nova Scotia Van HALEN kicked off Fair Warning ..1st time playing this....Unchained was the encore ..
Ya same here, had my box on 10 walking through the neighborhood going to school, got to school and had 20 or so kids standing around going "who is that" said it's Van Halen new album. half wanted to hear that intro over and over and the other half wanted to hear the whole tape, nothing like walking to class with a crowd hanging on every note, those were good times ✌️
I WORE OUT my cassette of Fair Warning, absolutely love that album, used to blast it in my car 😁🎸🖤🔥
I originally had Fair Warning on 8 track 😂
Same
I was blown away
They are just rehearsing and playing around. Wait till Joe gets some songs under his belt. He will sound amazing on tour.
This just proves that you can be a GREAT guitarist, because Joe is, but EVH stands alone.
Eddie was the Goat!
It’s two different styles completely. I can’t see Eddie playing much of Joes stuff as well. Good to see Joe giving props to Eddie though. Both great icons. RIP EV
it also says that EVH wrote and Joe has to learn it. A little harder to learn than write
@@johnbagewll2321I agree, joe is a little different, I’m sure Eddie could have played some of Joe’s stuff and vice versa. I had a buddy who was quite capable on guitar, he could play most of Eddie’s stuff fairly well, however, when he attempted to learn some stuff by Alex Lifeson of Rush or Jimmy Page of Zeppelin, he never could quite get most of it down. There you go, different styles and techniques
@@dwaynejessome1728 Exactly. (y)
Yay!! Satriani is human after all.
No, quite the contrary. He's pretending to be human. 🤣 Go see him in concert and you will see him surfing with an alien 👽. The alien is himself 🤣 Guitar is how he communicates with his boss. 👽🤣
Maybe Satriani whas an alien, but Eddie is guitar God
@CarlosRaCa Yeah, but seen the greats fuck up too...Including Eddie and Yngwie...We ARE MORTAL!
I agree.@@RonTimmonsM1
Because he has not wasted his life being EVH clone. He does not care to do covers coming up. He spent all time doing his thing. What you said was ignorant. Joe taught some of the greatest shredders in the world. Mad respect.
Eddie changed every guitar player as soon as running with the devil came out people were absolutely blown away,
Was the first single cover of " you really got me" released before the album came out?
Yeah, Eruption, and then you really got me!!!
@@gm3043 My band has done a cover of both Eruption into You Really got Me for over 10 years at this point and that's the one song that I HOPE I get it right. And truthfully I don't think I've EVER totally 100% nailed it on stage before.
Edward was a GENIUS. A f'ing GENIUS even at 20 years old. What a loss. Rest in Paradise Edward.
Gotta love Edward Lodewijk Van Halen
My favorite Van Halen song.
Yep. It's in my top 3.
It is the finest of VH moments. The main riff is archetypal. Profoundly iconic.
Great tribute to the king. Thanks Joe! You rock!!
Satriani is an amazing player.
Very true, but he totally botched this. Listen to the original after listening to this and you will see what I mean.
@@damachine3he literally learned it the day before and had to play it on that show with no pre rehearsal and warm-up whatsoever. So yeah, maybe he didn't quite nail one of Van Halen's hardest riff.
@HCkev He learned it the day before? As a Satriani fan, that makes me feel better.
He was put on the spot..I'm sure after playing this on tour he would nail it. Satriani is up there with Eddie as guitar gods
@@damachine3that's a gimmick you know
Please leave Joe alone. He’s a beast and we all know it.
💯
“I royally screwed up, which hurt like a thorn in my side, but I’ll get over it”: Joe Satriani says he slipped up playing Van Halen’s Mean Street on Howard Stern.
No doubt about that.
damn strait
Yes exactly, Joe developped his own way of playing guitar for decades so it s not natural for him to suddenly copy someone else s technique. Like any little kid could play this intro if they work hard enough, but they will be nothing more than a little copy pasted Eddie unlike Joe
I'm going to see this show. I have seen them as chickenfoot. Joe is a polished, perfectionist as a guitarist. He will easily be ready for the concert, and he will be playing all Eddie's rifs perfectly
I've been familiar with Satch and Vai and those guys since I picked up guitar as a teenager in the 90's. Guys like Malmsteen etc..Buying expensive VHS tapes because it was the only way to see those guys. Imo Eddie in his prime towers over all those instrumental rock guys. The solo stuff like Spanish Fly, Cathedral, Eruption was just the icing on the cake. His rhythm creation like what's in Drop Dead Legs, Unchained when the vocals kick in..that's the stuff that hooked me to Ed's playing. Even his instrumental song called Catherine that he did in his studio in later years was just dripping with emotion.
He was a rhythm genius, and his solos are untouchable. There’s only one guy that can play even close and his last name happens to be Van Halen. He has Eddie’s DNA and he can play almost like his dad. Look him up and watch him closely. Rick Beano said the same thing, he has the DNA!
VH dont compare to those 3 u mentioned. They are different class. Van H was fantastic too though.
Personally, I think Vai & Satriani might be more technically sound guitar players than EVH, since they are classically trained, and learned music theory in the process. They can sight read, and write music, which requires knowledge of major & minor scales, chord progressions, melodies & harmonies. Vai took lessons from Satriani, so their styles are similar compared to EVH. That said, EVH’s style is more organic, and his bag of tricks he developed add more personality to his unique style of playing. Hendrix was the first to completely change guitar playing, leaving his mark on rock & rol, EVH was the next guitar god to come along after him, influencing so many guitar players to this day, and will continue to do so for years & years in the future. Hopefully Satriani will continue to learn more about him, and come prepared for battle on the upcoming tour. If they have a show in (or relatively near) Maryland.
@cleech74
They ARE
And He IS
But none of this "he's better than" .....bullshit means a THING. EVH was a MASTER.
Satch is a MASTER.
VAI is a MASTER
When one reaches that level they are BEYOND comparison.....because their skill level is so advanced that in their playing, they are no longer displaying their instrumental skill. At that level they are DISPLAYING their SOUL thru that instrument.
So are we gonna say EVH has a better soul than Vai?
Or Satch has a better soul than Malmsteen?
What about Chet Atkins?....is Chet Atkins soul better than Tommy Emanuel's????
See? At their level, comparison is SILLY. ...Let's move beyond high school and enjoy the EXPRESSION OF MASTERS
@@64caretaker you are correct to a degree. All the guys you named are guitar geniuses and I don’t know if you mentioned Eric Johnson in there, but one thing is for sure and you can ask any of the players you mentioned and they will tell you that there is only one EVH and that is just a fact. If you really listen to what he did, that’s why they say no one can immitate. Only one person can play remotely like him and he has the same last name.
That intro is one of my favorites. Eddie plays it much cleaner. Must be cranked loud !!! Mean Streets kicks ass !
So truthful when Joe said, "this is impossible to play." Unless of course you're Eddie, or Joe Satriani. Props to Joe for such a compliment to Eddie. He's earned the priveledge to play Eddie's work live. I cant wait to see them!
Out of all the great vh songs, I think that one is the greatest of all. It had everything that was so great about Edward in it. Absolute peak talent. Anyone giving Joe shit about this is an asshole. Joe is a fantastic player himself.
Nope! Joe is a fantastic guitarist. I'm definitely a fan and scene him live lots of times, "but" he's a terrible choice to cover or "pay tribute" to Eddie. He plays and, more importantly, sounds nothing like Eddie. And we all know how much Eddie loved to play with his teeth, lol. I guess that's some leftover shit from when he did the Jimi Hendrix tribute tour. Which, by the way, also sounded terrible, or at least he did when I saw it. Nuno is probably the only guy who should be covering Eddie, period!
@williamallen7386 nuno is great himself but I don't think he can do it. Nobody can
Seguramente Steve vai puede
@@harrymetal3875 Steve Vai took lessons from Joe.
Joe is one of the FEW that give Eddie's stuff the tribute and honor it deserves.
Sorry, anybody paying attention to Joe for the last 30+ years you know damn well he can play that intro perfectly. This is all PR gamesmanship.
100%
He had to learn the riff quickly and had no rehearsal or warm-up prior to the show. I think we can forgive him for not quite nailing one of Van Halen's hardest riff 🙃
@@HCkevnah Joe played this song years ago, if ya dig around on n UA-cam you'll prob find it.

I always loved how Edward used that ‘slap and tickle’ technique for the Mean Street intro…LoL. The first time I heard it, I was blown away.
EVH is more than awesome. But he's Joe "Fuckin" Satriani. That's his legal name. Ed would probably have trouble playing Joe's stuff on a whim as well.
On a whim any guitar player would have issues playing any song without any practice whatsoever....
Eddie invented stuff on a whim. He's the gold standard for today's guitar players, like it or not.

I saw VH with Sammy🎶🎸🤔
The show was lackluster because "the suits" caused a rift between Alex & both Sammy & Michael...& it SHOWED🤔😡💔
The idea of Satriani attempting to pick up the torch Eddie laid down is HUGE🎶🎸🤔❤
I wonder if Mammoth WVH will be the opener?🎶🎸🙏
@@maestroaxeman Probably not, given that one of Van Halen’s final tours had Mike’s spot given to Wolfie, I think it’d be a little awkward
I will buy tickets for sure
Yeah! so true Sammy! I see 12 year old kids all over the place, all the time in grocery stores, picking up guitars and playing Eddie Van Halen songs. It's crazy! Just saw 2 kids yesterday at Krogers and 4 the day before at Trader Joe's doing it! Man, they're everywhere!
Much respect for Joe for his humility
I read an article about this. Joe was given a week to prep for this. And Mean Street wasn't on the list.
If there were ANY GUITARIST ALIVE that could even remotely recreate Eddie's emotional outpourings. To the like of " Mean Street "...It would be an honour of RESPECT. TO THE KING OF GUITARS
R.I.P EVH
I play guitar 🎸 not at any level even near Eddie but joes try at the intro pales in comparison sorry Joe.. Satriani is great at his own stuff in his own style. You just can’t compare anything Edwards chops though.

Satch and Ed and Stevie Ray are my three favorite guitarists ever. Neither of them can play each other's stuff spot on.
Im sure Joe will do Eddie Justice in his own way . Im actually excited for this . I hope wolfgang gets involved and does some shows with them .
Not trying to start anything, but won't happen
@247riffraff well, they are touring. If Wolfgang doesn't do it , oh well. I can't imagine him saying no to sitting in a few times . Either way it's going to be a great time.
@rcknrol7258 Why would Wolfgang sit in with them? Wolfgang was a bass player in van halen he took michael Anthonys job And is the reason why sammy left. highlight this reply
wolfy can shred on the Guitar. ya he plays bass great but have you heard his shred. sounds like his Dad. check out Dave Grohls tribute to his drummer who passed Hawkins. wolfgang 😅plays guitar on some VH songs and it was amazzing. sounded just like Eddie. ❤
@shadowmac11 yes I have seen it . Gives chills . He doesn't actually play it note for note but his dad's feel comes right through . It's almost spooky .
Truthfuly if I had my choice , it'd be Jacob Durraps . The guy chanels Eddie better than anyone. But , you know , to sell extra tickets , name recognition is important. Satch is also a cool guy and will do his best ...I think he's a happy dude and his appreciation of being in that spot will come through. In truth the whole point is to be a nod to Eddie's legacy not who can do Eddie better ....but yeah , I'd like to see Wolfgang do a few shows and them invite Durapps . That kid deserves it . He loves Eddie and has dedicated his life to Eddies Style . Who knows? Sammy is an open guy , anything might happen . Dave , Al . It'd be the biggest show on earth if the stars align.
That sounded pretty doggone good, honestly.
Satriani was courageous to give it a shot. Imagine playing this without really rehearsing. Satriani is an amazing player. Better than 99.99% of us... but Eddy was like Hendrix... something else! His riff had more to do with rhythm and percussion than with guitar. He reinvented the instrument. He was an alien.

And high, and asleep, and...
Yea, I'd like to see Eddie trying to play some of Satriani licks, oh well...

Love listening to Satch play and EVH
Umm..no.
Sammy , Ed didn't need to know music theory to create his rock inventions like this....He was an EAR player. & Ear players are not mere 'copiers ' ..then can use their ear to create new things for themselves. Nor could any 'kid in a grocery store' play Eds Meanstreet intro. Plus Ed actually expanded on it live in 1981 .
Oh, okay bud, you're gonna tell Sammy anything he doesn't know about Eddie? Don't think so- & Yes,Eddie DID have the ,formal classical musical training- he played extensive piano from an early age & knew wtf he was doing musically- stick with what you know, please- Also when Sammy said little girls in tge grocery store- it was just an expression, he was just talking about youtube videos with teenage girls playing Eruption- & yes, some do it pretty well, his point is ,just because you can.play it, doesn't put you're on the level of Eddie- bcus it DOES take musical knowledge to do what Eddie did- your assumption that Eddie played strictly by ear is flat WRONG
@@jerald6023 You are missing an essential point in your paragraph. Even if Ed was taught rudimentary theory during his piano practice days (and I doubt he understood the concepts in any depth considering this was when he was only 6 to 12 years old ) Ed did NOT RETAIN this information to APPLY it when he was teaching himself guitar by ear later when listening to Clapton’s solos. Ed DIDNT learn to sightread as proficiently as his Brother and used his ear to fool the teacher into thinking he was which indicates that Ed’s ear was overruling any applied conceptual abstractions….What you call ‘musical Knowledge’ is in reality just a set of abstract ‘theories’ to explain music, As Edward said -‘that’s why it’s called music THEORY. Not music ‘FACT’. Actually some philosophers might argue that like with Superstring theory in physics and Ptolemaic Astronomy there are too many competing paradigmatic versions of the theory for music theory to be calling itself ‘knowledge’ by any legitimate description…So I still believe your thesis is a total oversell of the role of theory in Edwards creative process….Plus Edwards creation of the Meanstreet intro involved innovative functions breaking the rules by which his instrument is played which required ‘theory teachers’ to have to invent a whole new system of tablature and notation symbols for the page in order to explain to schooled musicians how he was doing what he was doing,,,,,,, Peace.
@@walterevans2118 alright, niether wrong, both apply
Agree . Sammy over doing it there
@@walterevans2118If I’m reading you right, you’re misunderstanding the role of music theory in composition. EVH knew music theory because he applied it in his writing. The chord progression that EVH used in the tapping section of Eruption uses typical voice-leading, which shows that EVH understood basic harmonic principles. Regardless if the progression and voice leading was arrived at through conscious thought or the ear, both are elements of both composition and music theory. In the 20th century, music theory and composition are two sides of the same coin. And that’s the key. As Heinrich Schenker said, “the goal (of his teachings of music theory), was to build a practicable bridge from composition to music theory,” That was a paraphrase, but what he meant was that music theory, taught properly, is a “reverse engineering” of composition. One can tell EVH knew music theory because the fingerprints of that knowledge can be found in his compositions.
Eddie was incredible. A true master of rhythm as well as solos.
That's the first song I listen to when I get to work an hour and a half before the guys show up at max volume

Every few decades a player comes along that just totally blows everyone else outta the water, technical prowess and and ingenuity that stands alone against their peers, Lead Belly, B B King, Hendricks, Randy Rhodes, EVH, and their hasn’t been another since dimebag
