The car has a bypass in the exhaust which makes it sound crazy loud.

What a beautiful machine, doesn't matter if you have a 1.8t, a 1.9 tdi, 2.3 v5 or the r32, the Golf mk4 is one of the best cars ever made. But this one sounds amazing mate.

Nice video! I got one just like that (V5 2003) with leather interior though and only 54k miles. Paid 3.5k British pounds and Best Buy ever. Had it for a year and works flawlessly. You get about 35mpg (U.K. count) on the free way. City driving is a bit SH*T however drive as though you don’t have a brake (engine braking) and you’ll be aight. And btw, sounds amazing with stock exhaust as well
Are they reliable? Seen quite a few on Facebook Marketplace but a bit skeptical as I can imagine basic mechanical work will be quite costly due to the nature of the engine

They are great cars, but I have to say the automatic gearbox from this era is not that good. I would suggest to get a manual.

Are there any problems i should look out for before buying?
They are decent cars, but the chain is known to fail on higher milage ones. So make sure the chain has been replaced before. If the car still has the original chain, make sure it has had every oil service, otherwise it’s possible it will fail sooner or later. If you hear any rattling noice while revving or the Engine Light is on (on 2001+ models), then it’s time to change the chain. You can always grab an OBD scanner and check for fault codes. If it gives 2 fault codes on the camshaft it’s also time for a new chain. A new chain will cost you around €2000 (in the Netherlands). It’s an expensive job since the engine has to come out. Most people also replace the clutch since the engine is already out. So that’s another €400-500. The coils also tend to fail sometimes (on both 150HP and 170HP). But that’s not an expensive job. And the head gasket is also known to fail on higher mileage ones. That’s pretty much it, they are reliable if mainted well. Also always go for the 170HP (AQN), the 150HP lacks just that bit of power and feels more sluggish. The 170HP is also known for more reliable.

Het lijkt (en klinkt) wel dat de V5 zwaarder is dan de V6 (heb dat filmpje van u ook gezien).
Is er toch veel verschil in performance ja?
Het zal "normaal" wel (2.3L Vs 2.8L). Maar het lijkt wel bijna dezelfde robuustheid te hebben...
Hoe moet je het eigenlijk interpreteren? De V6 is dé sport wagen uit het Golf IV segment? En de V5 als tweede plaats?

De V5 klinkt idd wat zwaarder, de V6 klinkt wat hoger kwa toon. De V6 heeft wel wat meer PK en dat is ook wel te merken bij het optrekken. Maar de V6 is wel een stuk zwaarder dan de V5 (doordat de V6 standaard met 4Motion komt). Ook is de versnellingsbak korter vertand, dus voelt de auto ook sneller, het nadeel hiervan wel is dat je erg snel moet opschakelen. De V5 kan je wat langer door de versnellingen heen trekken. Vind ik persoonlijker wel wat leuker. Het verschil is eigenlijk best minimaal.
Dé sportwagen van het Golf IV segment is dan wel echt de R32 (3.2 V6). Daarna de 2.8 V6 en daarna de 2.3 V5.
Alle 3 leuke auto’s maar mijn persoonlijke voorkeur ligt toch bij de V5. Niks klinkt zo bruut als een 5 cilinder.

Ah ok, ik dacht dat de R32 pas bij de golf V van toepassing kwam.
Azo... dus de V6 klinkt wat scherper. Daarmee de V5 zo zwaar klinkt in uw filmpje. Is wel 👌 fijn geluid idem! En ja, een langere toerenbereik is toch wel iets leuker ja ...
Als ik het goed begrijp heeft de V5 voorwielaandrijving dan. Dat is ook wel leuk. De ophangsysteem 4X4 zal inderdaad parten spelen op het gewicht wat op zich dan compenseert met het meer vermogen.
Moeilijke keuze dan toch wel...
Want zo'n 4Motion rijdt ook wel anders (en is toch wel wat unieker).
Maar goed... uiteindelijk blijft de vraag dan : waar gaat ieders voorkeur naartoe hè ...

Uiteindelijk moet dat idem een geweldige Go-kart voertuigje zijn hoor. Want zo zwaar is het koetswerk van een Golf IV niet. En dan een leuke 2.3 erin ... man man! 🥰
@@patriziodinicola9362 ik ben zelf in bezit van een 2.3 v5 maar dan met 150pk, de eerste versie. Voelt aan als een massieve serieuze auto maar gaat echt als een raket. Ookal klinkt 150pk niet als veel, je hebt (misschien door het hoge toerengebied) nooit snelheid tekort bij het optrekken. En een stoplicht sprintje verlies je ook niet zomaar. Super betrouwbaar ook die 5 cilinder blokken en klinkt natuurlijk hemels.

150 pk in een "oude" kar (positief bedoeld weliswaar, want de oude wagens vind ik persoonlijk leuker en mooier) is toch wel veel hoor. Want zoals ik reeds vermelde, zo zwaar is dat carrosserie niet hoor ...

@@patriziodinicola9362 ik kan me zeker in je reactie herkennen. Ik persoonlijk vind de nieuwere generatie auto's erg onsympathiek en goedkoop ogen. Plastic en vergeetachtig. Er gaat voor mij niks boven een oudere auto die met liefde is gedesigned, een mooie blik heeft en gewoon solide ogend koetswerk heeft. Mijn v5 doe ik zeker niet weg haha :)

Nice. What is an exhaust valve bypass?
It’s a valve that you can open and close with a press on the button. If the valve is open, it will bypass all the mufflers and therefore sound like a straight piped exhaust. If the valve is closed, the sound will pass the mufflers and the car will sound silent. It’s a convenient way to make more sound.
I recently bought the same car but with a droning Bastuck exhaust. I'd love to get the same exhaust - could you tell me where you got it from?

The Remus exhaust was already on the car when I got it! So I don't where it can be bought. The exhaust valve is a custom job and is welded on the Remus exhaust.
How big is the exhaust? I have a Bastuck on it as well with 9cm diameter i think, its loud as hell but too big sadly 😂

Sounds just like my 90 2.3 difference is here we have electronic injections in audi 90 are mechanically injected…
And you have 10 fewer valves which, I think really adds to the exhaust note, I've had 80cd/90s years ago and those 10v engines with factory exhausts sounded, just phenomenal. I've had 4 v5 (aqn 20v) golfs/Passats and they are so quiet stock, promised myself I'd get a rear box but still haven't done it, keep hold of your 90, they're beautiful and disappearing fast!

If with GTI you mean the 1.8T then yeah. It’s an small upgrade from the 1.8T in terms of performance. But it’s no where near the R32. There’s a 2.8 V6 that comes after the V5. That one is almost as good as the R32.

What is the engine that uses fuel and is suitable for modifying the Golf 4 to enjoy power and speed?
Get a 1.8T GTI, easy to get a lot of power
