Midge Tip & The Bung - Stillwater Fly Fishing at Rosslynlee

  • This video features my recent trip up to Rosslynlee fishery, where I had the fishery to myself all day! Strange for a Saturday, but it was pretty windy!
    In this video I am using a Rio 6ft midge tip line, as well as using the bung on my Orvis pro line.
    Rods I am using are:
    Vision Onki 9ft 6#- midge tip
    Airflo super stikk comp 7#- Orvis pro line
    I quickly found that the fish were around 3ft down, and demonstrate how I fish these methods.
    I also touch on how using the bung can help beginners establish the depth the fish are feeding, and how you can then incorporate this into your tactics, and then switch to the countdown method.
    I tested out some new fly patterns that I have been tying, and feature them in the video.
    I hope you enjoyed the video, and please comment and subscribe to get future updates.
    Take care
    Chris

    Another cracking video and great advice. I really need to try the bung. Was out yesterday all day and caught one fish on a dry, something special about catching on a dry. That said, I noticed a guy using a bung and he certainly was catching more. This video has given me the knowledge to give it a try. Will let you know how I get on. Keep them coming mate.👍🏻🐟

      Peter Anderson - thanks Peter, and it’s definitely special catching on dries! The bung can be deadly, and especially if it’s flat calm. It also works well in the winter. I tend to only use this method for short periods during my session, as I do get a bit bored, but it’s a definite go to method and you should give it a go. I might try and do a dedicated bung video in the future. Cheers 👍🏻🎣

    I usually prefer to fish small stillwaters, but where I am in East Manchester there are mainly reservoirs. My local one is Errwood, bank fishing only and no wading. Any similar waters to you for any tips? Could be a good video to help people to work out locations on a big water with not many obvious features. Tactics, depths vs the conditions? I had success with washing line my first few visits, but last couple weeks had no joy 😭

    • @TheTroutFlyFisherman
      @TheTroutFlyFisherman  3 роки тому +1

      Rob Hart - Hi Rob, most of the larger waters here I fish by boat, but there is one I could potentially feature for the above, but will be closing soon for winter. If I don’t manage I will do it next year for sure. My tactics would depend on conditions, but the constants would still be keep moving and search depth. This time of year, a fry pattern would be my go to when searching, as this is perfect for round the margins on big waters. I would be seeking out any features like weed beds, inflows and outflows, reeds, trees or any structure in the water to start with. Just keep moving on a an intermediate using the countdown method (unless you know the fish are high), then when you locate fish and work out the depth, change flies if takes dry up going smaller or over to nymphs. As I say I will try to feature this but might not get the chance until next year now, as all the larger waters here close for winter around October. Cheers 👍🏻🎣

    • @TheTroutFlyFisherman
      @TheTroutFlyFisherman  3 роки тому +1

      Rob Roy - for flies 5 turn blood knot, or non slip loop knot with 5 turns. Key is pulling them right slowly, with plenty moisture and you will have no problems. Triple surgeons knot for droppers too, with extra turn to stand proud as per my last vid 👍🏻

    • @TheTroutFlyFisherman
      @TheTroutFlyFisherman  3 роки тому +1

      alenthesquirrel - hi mate, you won’t go wrong with the Shakespeare sigma fly combo as a starting point, in either 6 or 7 weight. If you are bank fishing then 9 or 9ft 6, if boat I would go 10ft. My favourite rod is my vision onki in 6 weight, and my favourite floating line is the Orvis pro, but for starting out I would go with that combo, and get yourself an intermediate (say 1.5ips) and sinking line (5 ips) and that will do you for a long while whilst you get to grips with each technique. I snapped a few rods when starting out, so best to go budget and then progress 👍🏻

  • @shaunfishes101
    @shaunfishes101 3 роки тому +1

    Hi Chris great vid again. Why is your bung set at 9'. I don't mind using the bung but do enjoy straight line. I have no problem with a floating braid then 2' or 3' to fly. I normally fish single fly if too windy as I don't like a long tippet flying all over the place. I normally find fish higher in the water when windy. flat and cold deeper. Oh you made me feel cold when I see you in your hoody.

    • @TheTroutFlyFisherman
      @TheTroutFlyFisherman  3 роки тому

      Shaun Fishes - thanks Shaun. It’s set at 9ft to give me the flexibility to go deeper if required, by just sliding the bung up. I love straight line too, but some days the bung will out fish any other method. Yeah multiple flies in the wind can be a challenge, but roll casting or big open loops helps control it. That’s interesting, as I find the strong wind generally, but not always, pushes them down. Haha, just wait til I’m fishing in the snow again! 😂👍🏻🎣

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101 3 роки тому +1

      m Not sure they are that near the top at that time of year. But I always work my way from the top down and its not very often I even get onto intermediate lines let alone sink lines. But once winter sets in that's another thing. On the bung, yes I didn't think, should have put my cap on before asking about 9'. And yes again bung in wind as its very difficult to keep contact with fly in stronger wind. Another factor is you are much further north than me. Our climate here is so different. Nice work Chris. Shaun.
