When I was in 2nd grade, I studied in a American school overseas due to my dad's work, I got to meet many friends from different countries, and my best friend was from North Korea. Maaaan how do I tell you this but her and her family were the sweetest, I stayed over her house for weeks and her family treated me like their daughter and always complimented me. Our parents became friends and I always called her Kim because i wouldn't remember her name so I just called her by her family name (if only she knows how many Korean idols names i can rememeber now lol) she was a huge fan of Kpop and we always spoke about 2NE1 and BIGBANG. We stayed friends until 6th grade, and that's when she told me that she has to go back to North Korea and I was really sad at that time because I didn't know what to do I wanted her to stay more. Idk why I just felt like talking about her. The thing I regret the most now is how I never thought about asking for her email since I was young, I don't even know how to contact her. I'm in 11th grade now and I always think about her, like how is she now?
In this small material you gave me a lot of information about korea country and history. Thank you very much. 감사합니다. Now I know more about the history of Korea. You're best ambassador and my teacher. You always know what important the Korean news, and songs is the best. You always know what I watch.Sometimes I'm angry that I was not born in your country, because in my heart I really feel that I should live in a country that has the most beautiful language of the world. You are my best teacher
Germany is precisely what the DPRK does not want, as Germany was no "reunification" at all. What actually happened was that East Germany collapsed, and West Germany annexed it.
You made this some months ago but I'd just like to say I admire you very much for touching upon this subject, as for many reasons many people are afraid to even bring up the current situation with the two Koreas even nowadays and many others are even kept ignorant of it, as you pointed out. Thanks very much for talking with us about it while still keeping the fun humour of KWOW :)
zms tprP Right, I was just saying that the Japanese flag was the last flag of Korea before the country was divided. The Korean flag before that was a little bit different than the South Korean flag.
Well in North Korean you can get drunk too, every day. Haha. My tour guides became more than just my guides, I actually got a close bond and we became friends. Yeh, it sucks that we cannot hear from each other directly :/ I could however forward a message to the company I went with, and they could deliver that to them personally as they go into the DPRK more often. But politics aside, if you can go to North Korea, do it! It's an awesome country with awesome people. It is a great experience to get a better understanding from THEIR point of view. You don't have to agree with it though, but at least understand their part as well for once. And hey, it's the safest country I've ever been to :D I would love to go back any day. I am not that anti-North as many others are. But remember, politics aside about my review.
+xTheLemon I'm too not very anti-North, and I love it's culture, but I don't like it's government. I want to travel there in the future but I don't have the courage.
Do it while it's still "mysterious". The country is opening up more and more :) You have to go with a tour company in order to visit, but for the DPRK it's totally cool. Nothing bad will happen unless you really want it bad. (Tear visa on arrival, insult the leaders or country in the harshest way, bring religous books). It's kinda.. you're a guest in a foreign country. Just like you shouldn't be praising christianity in an Islamic country or praise the Islam in Vatican. Just use common sense and you're cool :)
I really like that the music you have playing is the intro to Germany Vs. USA, it kept distracting me(in a good way), and made me smile. Great info! Thank you.
I find the Korean situation very interesting, Im glad you brought this subject up. In the past year ive become intrigued by the Korean language and culture. I love your kwow sessions and they have been helping me a lot. Korean will be my 3 language I have learned, not including English. I hope to continue to learn and in the next few years I hope to speak it fluently! Wish me luck!
@terracearts me too.. if not now hopefully one day :) i'd love to get more in depth with the culture, but thank you so much for responding though and the support!
The younger the South Korean, generally, the less of an issue it is for them. They see the same DPRK we all see, and , even to them, it is a totally alien way of life. They barely even speak the same language anymore.
I'm here in 남한 or 내한민국 already and I'm having a little trouble understanding some signs on the streets, i.e. when waiting by a pedestrian crossing points. It would be helpful to know what these signs mean and also if you can teach left from right and down from up. Please 감사합니다^^
Let's assume that the two Koreas united (presumably under Seoul, as it is not feasibly possible for North Korea to take control of, let alone maintain control of the South Korean government). The first challenge would be to quell any resistance from North Korea, including the remnants of the DPRK military, the fourth largest in the world. Although any resistance would be severely handicapped with the central government no longer in power, it is believed that the country has the capability to arm and mobilize 8 million citizens for military duty at a moment's notice. The second challenge would be to deal with the millions of starving refugees who would inevitably cross the former border into South Korea, which I do not believe the government is adequately prepared for. Even if the population remains static, billions of dollars worth of aid will need to be allocated to ensure the survival of 30% of the new country's population, a massive strain on the economy. The third, and in my opinion, most difficult challenge will be to not provoke China or the US to take any drastic actions in response to the unification. China has stated that it would be willing to support a united Korea under the South, if they sever all ties with the US and maintain a non-hostile disposition to China. China will not tolerate US or US allied forces amassing on its border, and I have no doubt the US would take advantage of an opportunity to pressure China by moving its forces from the 38th parallel to the Manchurian border. Even if the new Korea decides to sever ties with the US in an effort to avoid provoking China, it is unclear how the US will react to this. Also, it is unclear how Japan will react to the unification, as well as the possible cutting of ties to the US (and by extension, Japan). It is entirely possible that divisive issues between the two countries would be brought to the forefront without the unifying force of a common North Korean threat or membership in the US alliance. Even worse, Japan may feel threatened by a unified Korea, and take action (though this is less likely). In conclusion, I'm not saying that a successful unification isn't possible, but if unification does occur in the near future, serious work will need to be done on a scale rivaling that of the reunification of Germany.
Poor north korean people... because of Kim Jong Woon and today, his sun, Kim Jong Il they are suffering.... I really wish South and North Korea to be one Korea. I wish say someday: "I'm going in Korea!" Today I just can say "I'm going in South Korea"... Its a big difference between South and North.... Kim Jong Il is mad, real mad!!!

my mother is from south Korea she moved here back in the 80s, and my grandmother(her mom) is actually north Korean she went to south Korea when the Korean war was going on, very cool videos I watch them all even tho I know how to speak Korean they are just fun lol, keep it up
How about, "I have a head or stomache ache" or my tooth hurts, or I have a cold, doctor, nurse, medicine or tonic. How do most Korean's treat illness and prevent illness?
@Sasilmin; BTW. Very interesting to have a rare chance to talk to a North Korean. Can I ask you, any idea if North Korea is on good terms with Singapore? I heard that the first fast food restaurant in Pyongyang was opened by Singapore and how North Korea imports fuel from Singapore. The North Koreans also seem to think that Singapore parliaments are like North Korean parliaments whereby Kim Il-sung passes down the royal throne to Kim Jong-il. In Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew also "passed" (not so a
ok so i REALLY want to go study abroad to South Korea and after a lot of research and learning i know that one day I can hopefully go! this video really helped me learn a lot about the differences between the north and south. I'm from the US and my parents won't let me study abroad to south korea yet mainly bc they don't have enough information on it and their scared that since the war is still ongoing that something could happen to me :P whats the best way to try and inform&convince them?? lol
@studioduplo 북한 does not mean "north south korea" 한 is shorthand for 한국 (literally han land or han people) is one of the ancient names that Koreans call their own ethnic group.
I really want to visit South Korea, but I'm living in Europe and I don't want to take a plane. I would rather go there by train, but is that even possible? And how long does it take? Btw, I don't mind travelling by ship if it's necessary.
Dear Professor Oh, you wanna know you have different students from around the world? We can't suggest more, but can you do a lesson on countries and their languages?
I remember when i visited south Korea, soul when i was 11 or so, the people were very kind and the surrounding nature is BEAUTIFUL. I think it was one of, if not my favorite place that i visited when i was young and my family would travel.
I'm really interested in the sentence structure... please make one in LEt's learn korean... by porfessor OH.. please... in KWOW... I would like to learn about the endearment terms used in korea... Thank you!
This is a very sensitive topic or something which could be easily misconstrued by others. I really have to commend you for taking this topic and talking about it as best you can. Respect!
고마워요 for the video! Though I already knew most of the information in it, you did a good job of laying a basic foundation for my future Korean history studies. :D It would be nice to know the words for basic body parts, like hands, feet, and facial features, so I can say things like "My hand really hurts right now." (which it does) :D
did you not even watch the video? she gave a brief summary of why the countries seperated (and the links in the description provide extra information). and yes, both countries speak the same language
Can you guys maybe do something like this video but the topic would be traditions, customs, etiquette etc? It can be like a mini series :) I'm sure we can also learn a lot of Korean by learning about it :D
woah~ thanks Professor Oh!^^ Now I know a lot about the two Korea.. How about we learn about the "14th days" holiday? the one when the anniversary occured in every 14th of jan, feb, march, april ,.... Sorry for my bad english :)
I don't know enough about the history past this video to have an informed opinion, but I would like to know what would have to happen on both sides in order for some sort of reunion of Hangook to happen?
I highly doubt both Koreas will ever Reunite. NEVER EVER. Unless, the North agrees to change their political system. (which I highly doubt will happen) and the only way for that to happen is by revolution. North Koreans have been heavily brainwashed by propaganda for such a long time it is impossible to start an uprising because the people think their lives are normal. They never know what true freedom is because they've never been exposed to the rest of the world. How would they know when they're being blinded by their government?. Then again, even if it's a success the South needs to agree and open their border which I don't think they will . It's a suicide for South Koreans.
+Obama bin Laden kill their n.k's leader is the best way to make it happen... he is so freakin bad .. people there are starving while he's chilling .. fucking bastard
Im just curious, I still dont get it. please respond. thanks. I really want to know more in korean. To tell ypu the truth, i really learned something because of this videos, i started KWOW#1 until i finish it all and i take note of it. ANNYEONG!
To those who think that the United State should sign the armistice, it would be helpful to note that the state of war exists between North and South Korea. The United States is not officially at war with North Korea. The two Koreas are the only governments involved in that question.
@Sasilmin , is it true that you need a permission to travel from town to town? I really appreciate your comments, even though you have different opinion. It is normal to disagree in a free country and argue about things...
I think it would be great if the two Koreas could be reunited, but it would cause a lot of problems too. I think it's HOW governments would deal with it that would matter the most (if that makes any sense). Thank you for the helpful video, I'm trying to learn more about korea as I'm really interested in it and this really help because the conflict between south and north korea is pretty complex and I have a hard time understanding everything, but you made it really simple =)
This might sound very dull.. but actually a typical conversation would be good.'' Hi, how are you doing...nice to see you..how has your day been so far. When does the bus come, i am feeling sick to day, i am going to school, the weather is nice/cold/hot'' . Just some typical sentences that you can use when you meet a Korean tourist for example.
am watching "the king 2 heart" and it talks about a king that wants Skorea and Nkorea to unite as one , so i was curios i think it would be wonderful for a country to unite as one again and its too sad to think that some people such as u got separated from their familys hmm but i think that many souths disagree and are happy just the way they are but am not sure its just what i got from watching this drama but am still episode 7 so idk if that well change or somethin
Northern Irish History GCSE (literally junior high level for americans) teaches alll of the Korean War, and it was one of the highlights of the full course.
Thank You for explaining the two Korea's! I already knew that there were two Koreas but just not the technical facts! I think you did an excellent job of staying unbiased! I hope the two Korea's can merge on day and become one again! I think if it were to happen though there could be a lot of problems, like many people having opposing views and starting riots and such! But I think the best part would be for families to reunite or find out what happened to relatives.
yes, but with couple spelling differences, like 컴퓨터 (south) 콤퓨터(north), and 여자/녀자(south/north), word usage: 더운바지(north),호트팬츠(south ) accent is different(north is deeper)
thanks for making this video I've always been interested in history. I hope the two parts become united someday and families reunited. And the consequential economic ramifications are bearable for the new Korea.
as long as a leader loves its people there won't be any war it goes for both countries. I'd love to see them getting along like Romania and Moldavia, at least ...
I do wish for the merging of the two Korean countries, some day, because (like you said) there are relatives kept in isolation from those in the adjacent country and I am sure their are cultural benefits, as well... Though, the consequences resulting from difference in an economical, political and cultural standing point, will unfortunately and enviably effect increase discrimination, conflict, crime rates, etc. :( (btw, can you talk about dating in terms of celebration days, e.g. 100th day)
So that's the story ! Did anyone here watched King to hearts with Lee Seungi ??? That picture at 2:44 is the place they got married right ? If the North is that strict then I give huge amount of props to whoever recreated the area for the movie . Like seriously. It looks exactly the same !
United Korea is really a very nice idea, like in Joseon dinasty where in korea is viewed as one... I really love this colorful dynasty ... but it seems like history seems to repeat it self... I'm so interested in Korean history and I found out that such attempt to unite Korea always lead to a war of politics and idealism.
I love South Korea(남한) it's where my favorite tech brand come from (Samsung삼성 ), and recently I'm obsessed with Korean drama, and music, I've just recently finished watching Boys Over Flowers, and now watching Playful Kiss, I really respect your country so mush.
we'll never know until that day comes will we? How about learning more about family members and they're called since we already know Unnie/Noona and Hyung/Dongsaeng

talking about to reunite north and south korea, it would be like germany. i hope korea will be like german one day...
Germany is precisely what the DPRK does not want, as Germany was no "reunification" at all. What actually happened was that East Germany collapsed, and West Germany annexed it.
North Koreans would be better off if the South could annex North Korea.
It's just sad that foreign invaders caused Korea's division to north and south
HA! IM MOVING TO SOUTH KOREA! *packs things and shoots out the door like lighting* SOUTH HERE I COME
You made this some months ago but I'd just like to say I admire you very much for touching upon this subject, as for many reasons many people are afraid to even bring up the current situation with the two Koreas even nowadays and many others are even kept ignorant of it, as you pointed out. Thanks very much for talking with us about it while still keeping the fun humour of KWOW :)
I have a question, before S.Korea and N.Korea separated what was their flag? :O
The Japanese flag. They were a Japanese colony until the end of World War II.
***** Oh, okay, thanks
zms tprP Right, I was just saying that the Japanese flag was the last flag of Korea before the country was divided. The Korean flag before that was a little bit different than the South Korean flag.

with how progressive south korea is would conservative north korea be able to adapt?

If you go to South Korea, do you have to know Korean, or do some people speak english? I really wanna go to Korea, but I can't spea Korean very well
why are south koreans prohibited in North korea? I'm curious.
If you want to know about the war between north and south korea, you should watch : 71 Into the fire. Choi Seung-hyun (TOP from Bigbang) is in it!!
Please show simple conversation like how are you or whats your name etc.
How about we learn about credit or debit cards?
What happened to the royal family of Korea? were they killed? or were they seperated also? If they were still living where are they now?
@Sasilmin , is it true that you need a permission to travel from town to town? I really appreciate your comments, even though you have different opinion. It is normal to disagree in a free country and argue about things...
Well, happy birthday! My birthday was a few weeks ago! XD
Where was 2NE1??!!!
Next video should be about first impressions/greetings ^^
i really feel like i learned a lot more than i knew of the situation with N. Korea
it's really sad though..
Northern Irish History GCSE (literally junior high level for americans) teaches alll of the Korean War, and it was one of the highlights of the full course.
It'd be fun to know more family words, such as cousin, aunt, niece, etc. ^ ^
Wonderful!!!
yes, but with couple spelling differences, like 컴퓨터 (south) 콤퓨터(north), and 여자/녀자(south/north),
word usage: 더운바지(north),호트팬츠(south )
accent is different(north is deeper)
thanks for making this video I've always been interested in history. I hope the two parts become united someday and families reunited. And the consequential economic ramifications are bearable for the new Korea.
Very interesting.
please can you make a video about planets stars comets and space words
is it many tourists that goes on vacation to south korea? and where is the most popular place to go? :)
as long as a leader loves its people there won't be any war it goes for both countries.
(btw, can you talk about dating in terms of celebration days, e.g. 100th day)
Very lucid, subscribed.
XD love how happy everything goes 4:20 onwards XD
What about useful lines for tourists? I'm going to Korea, and I would like to know some useful sentences. :-)
Can you teach us some verb and how to use them. Cause we only know vocab, but not how to write a proper sentence.
Its the last day of 2016 and people still don't know that.. how sad.. *In my country it's still 31/12/2016 *I'm from Portugal**
Can we learn about clothings
I know that there are two Koreas. North Korea is not a very nice place.
Make a video about Korean holidays. :)
grammar! want to know how to put sentencs together.
I agree :O I also think there will be really bad inflation too, which is shame since South Korea's economy is doing so well right now!
I love South Korea(남한) it's where my favorite tech brand come from (Samsung삼성 ), and recently I'm obsessed with Korean drama, and music, I've just recently finished watching Boys Over Flowers, and now watching Playful Kiss, I really respect your country so mush.
