I realized my technique requires 300g/m2 weight paper, and boy it’s so expensive 🤦♀️ I’m with you on this one. But the quality matter when you need good results.
SAA used to do a pack of practise paper, don't know if they still do; planning your painting will help, too, as well as keeping a practise 'scrap' beside you to test on. I'm a veteran of failure!! Hope this helps 🙂

Yep, you nailed it! This is a great technique to improve values - my biggest weakness! I think I may use a sepia colour and choose a really old subject. Thanks for the inspiration 😀

I’ve drawn a double portrait of my daughter and her baby daughter and I’ve been trying to decide how to proceed because the reference photo is almost monochromatic with just slight coloration in the baby’s clothes (blue jean bibs). This seems like the perfect solution! Of course I’ll have to watch it repeatedly before I take the plunge but I’m so thankful to have found this video.

Could you do Lyra and Pantalaimon as a moth in watercolour? I think you'd do it wonderfully and although I'm looking forward to Daphne Keen as Lyra in BBC'S his dark materials, I would love to see what you'd come up with with a more accurate look. Just to clarify I mean her hair colour not much else.

Monochrome paintings/drawings are my favorite type to do. It really makes you think about techniques.

Anyone else hate using their watercolour paper because it’s so expensive? Or is it just me? It’s even worse if your painting fails 😑
So far, I use 180 gsm paper. Can't afford higher quality and I adore it.
