as an owner operator myself, i learned one thing above all, if you want to be an succesfull trucker, you have to get out of the truck....................................i am not going to dive into that and explain it.....no matter how much you tell people, or warn people, i will say , try it, then you will know...... And ,no, i dont want to hear about anyones lease purchase operator bull crap lying success stories, ill put it this way, there was this saying in the trucking world that used to say, he is just a motor away from going broke, then as time goes by, it was, he is just and tire or alternator away from going broke, and today it is, he is just a headlight away from going broke, ...............i have listened to countless stories of why drivers became a owner operator or want to become one and they say crap like , i want to travel the country,or i want to be my own boss...and those reasons are so stupid because there is mainly just one important one and that is to be PROFITABLE..case closed.....platitudes just make you stay in that so called positive attitude that is fake and i can guarantee you at some point you will have a breaking point as you discover and learn more things and all the complaining isnt going to help you because the very people you get your loads from dont care if you make it or not.i can go on and on ok.....but wouldnt do much good....it dont matter if you are positive or negative ok, you gonna break somewhere......when brokers say they want positive people to work with, that generally means they want someone to haul it as cheap as possible. think anout it, while brokers are fighting over freight, you got drivers fighting over freight at the same time..you can build all the sweet relationships you want and then all of a sudden your world comes crashing down on you because the company would rather bankrupt you instead of themselves going bankrupt, and then what? when you are gone, you find out that thy got someone else to do it cheaper than you....like i said, if you want to be an successful owner operator, you have to get out of the truck, why? does anyone ever really stop to think that the big trucking companies are owner operators themselves? i wil stop here because it will be a waste of time to go further....a man who has vision problems and goes to the doctor and ask"s,Dr. i have heard than smoking pot helps with peoples vision, the Dr replied, i dont know, try it and SEE.

I've been a company driver for 4 yrs now. I have 6 people living of my income + mortgage, bills, ect. After making 30k in a year doing flatbed, me and my wife have decided to go on our own. Flatbed season starts in March and the plan is to be running on my own authority by then. Since I have been driving, all I listen to on the radio is business mindset podcasts not just trucking but anything to do with business, investing and negotiations. For me being in a truck is everything, if I knew how much I would love doing this I would have started long time ago. Plan is to start with one truck build relationships and build a fleet, but first one truck and we will let the business dictate the next step Looing for any advice other than (Don't do it). For me at this point it's a risk not taking a risk. Any advice will be deeply appreciated. Thanks

On your Dashboard, put the picture of what you love the most in life. The picture of what moves you. That wich takes your breath away. The one person place or thing that that you want to go back to or stay with. Put it in yoiur head that no matter what happends, that is what you are working for. Keep doing what you are doing and soon, maybe not tomorrow or the day after, you will look at your self and say: I did it. It took ke since February 2, 1990 till last year to get to that point.
Let me ask you this, how do you measure success? Is it a thing, car, motor home, vacation home?
A place, vacation spot, a certain beach, a well earned vacation?
A person, wife, children, siblings, or parents?
Wich ever or whom ever, if you measure success by how much time you can spend with them, how much accumilation of toys you have or how many vacations you can take and the places youbcan go, then you are correct.
True success and the guage to success is this..
The progressive realization of a worth while dream, goal or vision.
Find your dream and plant that dream deep down in your heart, in your soul. See that dream daily and strive to achieve it. When the day kicks tou in the teeth ( and it will, this is trucking ) tell your self this is only temporary. Dont get the res ass. The res ass will only change your focuse to the teeth kicking. Surpass it, WORK the problem and kick back. Satisfaction is a myth. Never be satisfied, never fall into a comfort zone. As Will Smith said, tear the rearview mirror off, screw plan B because it will derail plan A. Give'em hell and dont let up.
Save like there is no tomorrow.
Some drivers say, I have to eat a hot meal atleast once a day. That one meal just cost you about $5,000 this year. That is $5,000 you have justvstolen from your dream. You Thief! How could you steal from your self and your children? In 5 years you have just stolen $25,000.00 from your self. All because you want to feel comfortable once a day.
Cimmit your self to your dream and when you puck up your head with your wife by your side and look it all over, the greatest reward shall be said to you.
    You are this families HERO.
Then, you can stay home and not leave till you want to. Take your Wife to the clothing store and when she says wich outfit should I get? You can look her in the eye and say, Take them all.
    Stay Driven my friend. 😎👍

I love this man and this is exactly why I love your comments. I agree with you 100% and I am instilling that mindframe as deeply as I possibly can. Success to me is absolutely spending more time with my family and not being forced to work as much as I do. I definitely never want to stay satisfied and that is actually part of the name of my channel at least what it means to me and the reason I always say state driven. Complacency in this world will not even let you feel the kick in the teeth that he can deliver and I always want to stay hungry. You’re absolutely correct about that one meal a day and I’ll be honest, that’s certainly something I can work on. It takes a master of self discipline to achieve great success but I feel I am on the right path and that is why I am sharing my story because I am excited for the day that I can tell my wife to buy whatever she wants. Has nothing to do with monetarily being well off, It has everything to do with reaching my potential. Just like Will Smith said I don’t think there’s really much special about any certain people, it just boils down to are you willing to work your ass off. It thrills me that you have taken an interest in my story and my videos as I know what it takes to reach the level you have. Once again thank you so much for the comments brother, he can’t be overstated how much I truly appreciate them. 👍🏻👊🏻

The barriers to entry are realtively minimal as far as turning a driving career into a small trucking business, a significant portion of the industry is built around that exact model. Of course the major downside to this is many people attempt it that really have no business running a business and they are (more times than not) undercapitalized.

A good warranty and 25k in savings before buying a truck. Get an insurance broker to help find the best rates. Have your own authority for a year before trailer leasing companies will lease to you. Do power loads for the first year. Then either buy or lease a trailer but be sure the trailer is newer since shippers will not load some trailers. First get an LLC, open business account and increase your credit limit, buy the truck with special warranties added, get best insurance rate by using insurance broker, apply for authority, plates, ifta, and if not confident use companies like apex to get you road ready. You tight-lipped men are annoying. Do not haul overweight loads your first year. Say yes to lower paying loads since they are short hops and add up, plus it increases your on time delivery record shippers look for. Keep insurance rates low by stopping before weigh stations and double checking your truck/logs. Typically people fail at o/o because they can't afford skyrocketing insurance rates caused by minor roadside violations as well as costly repairs with no available credit or maintenance fund. Keep your wheels turning, don't get lazy, and have a good personality at shippers/receivers since they will often load or unload you early if they can. Which in turn keeps you moving

    • @DrivenTrucking
      @DrivenTrucking  5 років тому +2

I don’t really know, I’m not fully educated in the subject, but, personally I believe we are a long ways away. I can see the benefits from a business perspective but that doesn’t mean I like it. We’ve had the technology for quite some time to have autonomous airplanes yet pilots aren’t going anywhere and I’m certainly not downplaying the difficult job of being a pilot but it’s true. I believe there are too many hurdles to see autonomous trucks within the next forty years 🤷🏼‍♂️ total guess though.

Hi. I am a driver for Boyd Bros Flatbed out of the Birmingham, AL area and was giving some serious thought on getting my own LLC started and getting my truck. I mainly want to stay in the S/E and venture up to the Lower MidWest get drop and grab more loads coming back down to GA. I only want to stay out for 4 days at a time and downloaded the Demo version of the DAT? Seems the areas I was looking into are pretty good for what I want to do. So, most drivers I speak to say buy a brand new truck so the repairs will be under warranty when it breaks, but that is crazy for me to hear that. I want a used truck under 400K miles, looking at peterbilt's. for under 40K. I also need a trailer and pretty much everything that goes with it. Not to mention the fees and charges invilved in getting my DOT/MC, Ins etc. Where can I get assistance at? By the way, trucker tool app is great!
    Thank you!

How much cash in the bank would you say would be good before jumping to O/O? Would you recommend paying myself as much as a company driver and just putting the rest of the money into savings and back into the truck? I think going with an LLC would help to cover me when and if I jump. Thoughts?

You'll need to float most invoices on NET30 terms as an independent operator so try to have about 60 days worth of all your bills (personal and business) at your disposal. Start as a sole prop for ease of start up. If you find you're doing well after a year or so than reconsider your business tax structure.

What's ur thoughts if I was to purchased a truck but pay someone to drive it? I would do the paperwork stuff/load scheduling and such, along with holiday and sick day coverage for the driver (so I'd be driving maybe 3-4 weeks/yr, assuming my driver is reliable all year round). If I can NET 30k/yr doing this, than I am definitely interested in going this route with it.
Just curious ur opinion on it.

My first goal is to be a owner operator and than possible own my own fleet depending on the work load and if I like it enough. I see jobs online saying $1000 a day for owner operator drivers is this true?

People think they go O/O and suddenly they make thousands a week like NOOOOOO the BUSINESS makes money and you are simply and underpaid employee of your own business until its so far along that you can pay yourself a ton of cash.... you are a business owner... not a driver!
