  • Nasal Polyps are a common Nasal problem and a frequent cause for visit to the ENT specialist.
Nasal Polyps usually form as a result of long term allergies and infections in the nose.
The exact trigger for nasal mucosa to convert into a polyp is not known.
Nasal Polyps usually start forming in the Osteomeatal complex and gradually spread.
In long standing cases all the sinuses get involved.
Once you visit an ENT Specialist and he suspects Nasal Polyps then a nasal endoscopy will be done.
Other investigations may be ordered, including a Blood Count and an IgE level estimation.
A CT Scan of the sinuses is usually performed to check the extent of the disease as well as a roadmap for the surgery which will be performed.
Treatment of nasal polyps is usually a combination of medication and surgery.
FESS - the surgery done for nasal polyps is a successful surgery and patients do well for a long term after the surgery.
The disease is, however, recurrent in nature and can return at any time.
After a surgery it is important to be in regular touch with your doctor so that early recurrences can be spotted and treated early.
    When is Nasal Polypectomy Necessary?
    Understanding Your Treatment Options
Nasal polyps are noncancerous growths that develop in the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses. They are often associated with chronic inflammation, which can cause symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and loss of smell or taste. In some cases, nasal polyps may also cause facial pain or pressure, headaches, or recurrent sinus infections. While some cases of nasal polyps may be managed with medications such as nasal sprays or oral steroids, in other cases, surgical intervention may be necessary. One such surgical option is a nasal polypectomy via ESS - endoscopic sinus surgery.
A nasal polypectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove nasal polyps. The procedure is typically performed under general anaesthesia and involves the use of an endoscope, to visualize and remove the polyps. In some cases, a balloon sinuplasty may also be performed to open up the sinus passages.
Nasal polypectomy may be recommended in cases where medical treatments have not been effective in relieving symptoms or preventing recurrent polyp growth. It may also be recommended in cases where the polyps are large or obstructing the nasal passages, leading to difficulty breathing or sleep apnea. Additionally, a nasal polypectomy may be recommended in cases where there are concerns about the possibility of malignancy or infection.
While nasal polypectomy is generally considered a safe and effective treatment option, it does carry some risks, such as bleeding, infection, or damage to surrounding structures such as the nasal septum or eye or brain. As with any medical procedure, it is important to discuss the potential benefits and risks with your healthcare provider to determine if it is the appropriate treatment option for you.
After a nasal polypectomy, patients can generally expect to experience some nasal congestion, discomfort, and mild bleeding for several days. Your doctor may prescribe pain medication and/or nasal saline rinses to help manage these symptoms. It is important to avoid blowing your nose or participating in strenuous activities for several weeks after the procedure to allow for proper healing. Your doctor may also recommend regular follow-up appointments to monitor for any recurrence of polyps or other complications.
