I am in CT too. For a wealthy state, with a huge budget surplus, our mental health system is a cruel joke. We have more mental health beds in prisons than in hospitals. My brother, who suffers from Schizoaffective/ Bipolar I, has received woeful care. We as a family are told that he has the right to be psychotic. And when he is threatening, we are told that the threat is too general and not specific enough...until he is arrested for being threatening. Then he is put in jail rather than sent to the hospital even though we plead. Where is the sweet spot for treatment ? They are able to find a place for him in our psychiatric prison but not our psychiatric hospital. In fact, he was deemed ineligible for an inpatient bed at CVH because he doesn't have a dual diagnosis. Our psych hospitals have largely become rehabs. My brother's life has been destroyed purely by mental illness. Yet he can't be admitted to a psych hospital because there are so few mental health beds for the truly mentally ill. If he did heroin too he might have a chance. We have gone so far off the rails that it is criminal. Oh and he will be back on the streets at the end of this week. All the while thinking nothing is psychiatrically wrong with him, just that he got screwed over in life.

If the question becomes, what happened to you ? rather than what is wrong with you?, answers to the underlying reason for psychotic tendencies will come to light---drugs might be useful at times but my experience is that people with psychosis who are then expected to live life on drugs become zombies, which is convenient for those around them.

Sounds like coersion. To force medication as terms of condition to interact with family or Communities

"Just do what you think is right", "If they cheat you, it's not your problem", "someone Will help you with immediate effect". What's The Link between the above voices with schizophrenia, and psychosis?, I think I only need wisdom to deal with my daily routines.
Watching you from GHANA 🇧🇴, regards to All voice heaters 🎉

Yeah, if you want a "normal" boring life take the meds.
This, in my opinion, is a good example of what causes "schizophrenia."

Not sure how my response will go down here.
So, Freddie says that in order to live medication free with voices you have to first be able to comprehend that the voices are not real. Im sorry Freddie, but this makes no sense in terms of psychology. All voice hearers who live successfully with or without drugs (some of whom are non help seeking) actually approach their voices as if they are real. Since the voice hearing experience is 100% real to the voice hearer, denying them this (via drugging, distraction, silencing, denying) is extremely counter productive. Maladaptive coping is persistent insistence that delusions are real, or that paranoia is based in real phenomena. Maladaptive coping is NOT developing a better relationship with voices. Yes, in these groups, the whole of the persons experience is listened to with an open heart (is that really so wrong btw?), but the real aim is to RECOVER.There are many, many, many success stories about people who, through the HVN, have managed to turn their life around on the basis that they overcame these counter productive methods and found their own, i.e. having dialogue with the voices, setting boundaries, understanding where they come from/why they exist, resolving trauma, and not feeling isolated. There are also many studies that prove that positive rather than negative engagement with voices effects benefit. It is all based on logic and science.
Also, I really don't understand what the general beef is here with the HVN. It really doesn't hurt anyone!!!! You just read a really terrible article in the NYT. Shit happens. Dont listen to the media! No one is telling anyone to go off their medication. Some people are better with medication. I think most people accept that. Where is this coming from? Some people hear very loud, relentless, dreadful voices despite all the medication in the world!!!! They turn out to be better off without it, because psychosis which requires intervention is when you develop more than one symptom and the symptoms keep building and grow worse... if you only ever have one persistent symptom and you learn to manage it, you can lead a productive, healthy life, maybe without medication. Some people might have 2 or even 3 mild symptoms that they can learn to live with and they might find that medication does not benefit them, or they might find that medication benefits them for a short period. Generally, it simply cannot benefit you longterm because it makes you into a shell. Yes, some people need it, but it is vastly untrue that all people need it.
I suppose the problem is that people are never given a proper opportunity to not be drugged. By that I mean that as soon as you are declared mentally ill you are drugged and because the drugs are so dangerous and so potent, you cannot just stop them. The withdrawal will cause a relapse. So, people are enslaved by drugs. And all psychiatry ever does is drugs, drugs, drugs. In American society of course, it is substantially more difficult. I have never been to America, but from what I have seen and heard, it is a mentally ill, insane society where there exist vastly more mentally ill people and substantially more violence than anywhere else in the world and such people are forced to relapse in such a world. They are forced by the conditions of their society to develop mental illness in the first place. I'm sorry about how that sounds, but it is a fact.
Idk what to say to you long suffering, caring moms. Your extreme concern (which can sometimes be completely paternalist in every way, yes, ok, sorry!) is completely warranted, but sometimes people need to exist as humans. We all have our unique journey. We are not all the same. The extremely crude chemicals used by psychiatry and labelled as medication are overrated. If you had to take it, you would understand that they are pretty much debilitating (often far more than the disease and they will most definitely cause serious health problems which will likely lead to death) and just because it makes your kid look better, it doesnt really make them better in many cases. If only it could. Unfortunately it is very limited in what it can do. The real idea is to learn to actually cope. There is nothing wrong with learning to cope!!! That is what the HVN is about!!!! I really dont see the point if all this catastrophising and minimisation of facts!
Why do we all have to cry into our pillow and curse god for creating mental illness?? HVN helps many many people. If HVN was banned or shunned I really wouldnt be able reconcile anything. The question is, how can you????
Lol. Wtf. When peer support was emerging it was frowned upon that how could mentally ill people get anything out of helping each other? HVN is basically the same thing. Is it really so wrong for you to accept that some people can cope without medication just because coping with medication is often not coping?

What the hell are you trying to say?
"They can't grasp that the voices aren't real"?
If they aren't real what are they?
If I hear a voice, what are you saying? Are you saying that I am not hearing a voice?
