I've been waiting to see when you got to that 383. Not a drop of oil came out and the valley pan was gone. I hope you can rebuild that but not holding my breath on this. WOW so much rust.
Damn that motor is in very rough shape but hopefully it can be rebuilt so you can put that motor in your awesome Charger , keep it up mate your doing an awesome job 🤘
I'm crossing my fingers that you get some good news from the machine shop after all the effort you put in to get it this far. All in all it was an interesting and informative video. Keep hope alive.
Hi buddy love your series and may I make a suggestion regarding your engine before you take it to a machine shop, get a large plastic barrel big enough to suspend your engine in then fill it with water and soap powder, Beng up a steel rod and hang it over the side of the barrel but in the water, get a low voltage battery charger clip the positive to the rod this will then be a sacrificial anode, then clip the neg to the engine block make sure the connection is out of the water then turn on the battery charger, you should see very fine bubbles coming off the engine this is the rust cavitation it will be attracted to the anode. At least that's how I think you set it up it's kinda like the reverse of electro plating, the water will become sludgy so you may have to repeat it a couple of times and it may take a couple of days but it will save you a bunch of cash, there is a UA-cam video of a guy who de rusts a flat head ford engine he explained how to do it. The engine looked brand new when he took it out I think he also used the same method to de rust all his small parts to. Look into it it may be helpful keep the content coming take care all the best from the UK....
wow, that's mind blowing! have you thought of sitting the whole engine in tub of Evaporust? it can be diluted down and reused. might be cheaper than marvel mystery oil.
Nice tip for the future, do not leave my 383 in Lake Michigan for 35 years, got it lol. No one will blame you if this engine isn’t used, but it’ll make the overall story of the car so much cooler if you do, but regardless you gotta put that 4 speed in it
Great looking boat anchor. Time for a modern EFI hemi. With all the machining that one needs you’ll probably not have to spend too much more for a much more reliable rig.
Barry Gilgen looking real good on the charger, one step at a time pays off, you do good work, have watched a few videos on other guys doing body work and I can tell that you are doing quality work, some guys I would not want to buy the car when they get done
Love what you are doing. Let me know if you would like to sell that Inland shifter. Not sure what your plans are for that part of your build, but I would love to have it for my Bullitt tribute Charger. Keep up the good work!
I think they had an easier time unearthing King Tut’s tomb, but then again that engine could’ve come out of it too! WOW! … And never a video goes by where you don’t use your trusty grinder - even on an engine block! Hey rust bucket, I told you I had a 1970 road runner, I had to send out the short block for a rebuild a 383 with a 727 auto. This was 25 years ago, I had the 906 cast heads and a double roller timing chain, they put back on for me. They would only rebuild it to stock form, If I cammed it up or anything they would not warranty the motor, so I left it stock with a 650 carb, a 750 was too much, it ran better with the 650. My biggest mistake, was not starting with a 440 instead, It was fun but wasn`t fast by no means. Thay were heavy cars, I think 4,000 lbs.Make the table out of that boat anchor. and find you a 440 block, they were 390 hp right out of factory, that 383 I believe is 320 hp. I had a road runner engine so I believe it was 330 hp because the head flowed a little better, back then it was $1,400 to rebuild it. I`m dying to see the table. That motor is gonna cost a fortune for 330 hp. I don`t know engine building skills of course, but I would find the 440 block, just my opinion, I will keep watching, come on bad ass table. All the best, from Michigan.
@@rustbucketrestos6511 Oh, well in that case, you do have engine building skills, so it might be worth it, I got tired of the 383 that`s the main reason I sold the car, sounded good, but had trouble getting out of it`s own way, hehe.
I was waiting for your next video, I have been watching Chris Songbird do road kill, with absolute amazement of this guys fabrication skills, and knowledge of where everything goes on these Chargers. Good luck to you, I`ll be watching.
Seeing those timing gears come off in one piece with the chain stiff as a board made me laugh out loud. None of those cylinder bores look bad enough that .30 over cant fix em right up, cant wait for the next vid!
Just started watching your videos bud first off I'd like to say it's very cool to see someone' with heart like you have to save these car's! I just bought a 69 charger and it's rough bitt I just can't wait to start working on this beast! I have offered several parts from AMD everything has come in good shape but the one and ONLY thing I just can't get with out being smashed is a roof skin! On my 3 Rd one and still waiting! Anyways I will continue to watch your videos and I will post some of mine as well when I get started! I have always said most these guys but car's that are pretty much mint condition I say I want to see skilled people the ones that turn cars that are horrible into gems! I mean they sell all the parts why not make it a challenge! In the end what a accomplishment it will be!
I really hope it is machinable. Depending on how stock you want the motor to look you may want to find a junk yard engine with decent parts. By the way I pulled my 383 Mag out of my 70 Challenger in a tree....
That was the funniest way to get a valve cover off without undoing a single bolt! Haha - seriously hope the block can be saved, that will be an awesome story for sure. If not there’s always Hellcat crates for like 50g’s…😳
if you can bring back a motor as well as you have brought back the car it will run great . could you pop off the side cover on the 4speed to see if the gears got rusted ?
I got to say I love the content. When I can I’d like to find a 68 Mercury Cougar to build. It’s going to be blue and gold (my school colors) New Prairie Home of the Cougars. And I got a 351 Windsor out of a ford ranchero to put in it. And I’m doing a four speed swap. Love the Channel hope to see the charger in person one day.
I bet as long as there's no cracks or other structural issues the machine shop will bring that block back to new! I'm looking forward to the next video, thanks!
Well buddy sounds good hope things good with the motor I once had to Soak a motor for two months after getting it to the state you got your in Diesel had the motor in there finally broke free then took it in to have things machined
If your like me it's more of a saving a appropriate orig block that is close to my car's age, even if it is more work and expense than putting in a modern engine. Going by the way you do your rebuilds (rust bucket resto's) on cars that 75% of people would just use for parts and trash the rest it's most likely true!
Really enjoy your videos. Check out DDspeedshop's build of his 1968 Plymouth Sport Satellite. He installed an engine from a Chrysler of the same era which gave him an original looking motor. He was able to install it with Chrysler mounts, wiring, etc. These engines should still be available. You have great body working skills.
You can not remove the camshaft without removing the lifters. Regardless I don’t think that engine is salvageable. At least for a reasonable cost. Better off with a crate engine.
HOLY CRAP!!! that is the worst motor I have ever seen. I hope it works out because you put a ton of work into it. I don't know what else to day, I am just mesmerized by the amount of crap you pulled from the block and related parts. Good video and sheer determination.
What do you plan for the 383? I have been studying because my RoadRunner has a 383 and I've developed a plan for it and curious as to what you are panning.
Never seen a valley pan removed with a shop-vac. You might set the WD-40 aside and try PB Blaster or a 50-50 mix of acetone and ATF. Keep up the videos and always look forward to seeing your work!
Not a chance of getting the cam out while the lifters are all in and seized in their bores. I hate to say after you spent so much time but find yourself a better core. If no oil comes out the drain plug and crank won't turn keep looking.
If that wasn’t the matching engine I’d say scrap it. I passed over a similar engine, sitting in the wrecking yard 20+ years. If the machine shop has ultrasonic tank maybe try that.
Nice mezzanine mister Never, ever seen the valve covers or timing chain cover on a B or RB engine with more than just surface rust. Be watching to see if they can get all 16 lifters out of their bores and your cam unlocked from it's bearings. Granted those years of B engines had forged crank and rods, no one would blame you for buying a roached earliest seventies Winnebago( for pennies on the dollar) to score the RB 413 or 440 out of. Everything was forged right into 73' IIRC. Roached out Cordobas used to be a great source for a cheap 400 B block, with the best 906 head castings, already for now lead gas too. Grab a serrated or spun bearing'd 440 crank and have it welded up and put it in the doba's 400 to give you a 451 that'll rev like a smallblock and deliver far, far over 500 ft/lbs, lower down in the rpms, than any other big block.....and cheaply too. Good luck keeping clutches in it though. Loving the videos. Keep up the great work. Your new state looks half as cold as my neck of the woods. Working with the door open, this time of year! Shows you're still young. Malcolm Ottawa Valley
Submerge it fully in diesel fuel. For at least a week. The corrosion that is produced by the 2 dissimilar metals (Iron & aluminium) is completely removed by diesel. You can set up a DC voltage charge on it as it’s in the diesel. A reverse of electroplating current. Using a ships sacrificial anode. This will help speed up the process bud! And save you money! There’s videos on this!!! I do really hope your block is saveable bud!! And the 4 speed too!! Let us know the outcome of the block bud!! I’m praying it’s good to go!!!
Use Freeze off CRC or Knock'er Loose CRC or Kroil. U can also soak the cylinder's with ***Vineger for a week, it will remove the rust for real. Or if you have a real torch and know how to use it properly rose bud the flame and swirl it in cylinder like combustion not in one spot will loosen the heavy cylinder wall rust. You are diffenatly going to brake at least 4 to 6 pistons getting them out the ring's are stuck on the wall and aluminum filled the gap and piston pin's are stuck in position will not move for sure to get crank out. piston (1) should come out (3) can come out (5) is really stuck will brake (7) will brake (2)(4)(6)(8) look like they might not brake because cylinder wall's like like small amount of rust
I would be more concerned about the condition of the transmission. hopefully you can save that. but that block is really bad. The cylinder walls could be so pitted that you can't bore them far enough to get the pits out. I scrapped a chevy 400 block that I cut the pistons out of because of that. I would keep all the hardware and accessories and find a better engine. They are not hard to find. If you were still in Ohio I would offer you one of my 440s. I'm in Pa.
If you have time....I'd keep soaking that entire motor. Up to the point of bringing it to the shop. The longer you let it soak with the Marvel mystery oil the better. Ive seen it bring hard rust off tools and made them work again. Just don't drain the motor. Just straight up soak it
That engine has endured neglect. I know that original 383s and 440s are not as available as they used to be. The old style engines are cool if you can get a good one.
I think I would have pressure washed it first then doused it with ATF in the cylinders and right down the manifold. There’s crap all through that block.
I think the only thing you're going to save from there is a bellhousing and maybe some transmission parts bolts and some Hardware you're better off to just go get an engine at a swap meet or a friend there's lots of other better engines to be had
Man you're tenacious. I wouldn't want you hunting me down.
I love the “SLIPKNOT” video in the background !!! Best way to work in the garage

Iv'e never seen a motor with holes rusted in the valve covers. fascinating, can't wait to see how this goes. God bless.
I'm betting it's because the engine bay had grass/weeds growing up in it that were retaining moisture on top of the covers.
I like to see the slipknot in the background hell yeah!!!🔥🤘

Great question! I’ll look up some tips and include them in a future video!
A DIY method is to place engine & parts in a raised up barrel of wood fired boiling water.
I might try electrolysis on it. Heard that works really good!
Will do! Thanks for the tip!
Holy Hellbomb
It just kept getting worse lol. You ripping the valve cover off though 🤣
The mouse nest in the pan 🤢
Where did you say you got this motor? Lake Michigan?
Bottom* of Lake Michigan!
All you're really gonna use over is the block so worst case go to town busting out pistons & cutting the rods/cam if you have to 🤘
Never seen a motor this bad before. I just can’t believe this motor can be saved.
I’m glad I’m number 1! 🤩
Wow ! But those stair's look un-safe! Tell me you are going to fix that ??
They are designed to be like ships ladder stairs. Helps make the best use of the space I have & they are rock solid!
Hydration is key!!!
Always stay hydrated!
Look round for a dodge viper engine I think it was cheaper than trying to rebuild that
Vinegar works best on rust!!
Thanks for the tip!
🔥
So the Charger should be named St Jude because he is the patron Saint of Lost Causes.
Hahahaha perfect name!
A mouse nest in the oil pan, hopefully it can be salvaged
Several generations of mice lived in the engine of this thing!
I'm trying to figure out how mice got in the oil pan?
I would be more concerned about the condition of the transmission. hopefully you can save that. but that block is really bad. The cylinder walls could be so pitted that you can't bore them far enough to get the pits out. I scrapped a chevy 400 block that I cut the pistons out of because of that. I would keep all the hardware and accessories and find a better engine. They are not hard to find. If you were still in Ohio I would offer you one of my 440s. I'm in Pa.
Wow, you should have worn full body hazmat suit 😬
My 302 Windsor was worst, now it’s a runner- coffee table lol
If you have time....I'd keep soaking that entire motor. Up to the point of bringing it to the shop. The longer you let it soak with the Marvel mystery oil the better. Ive seen it bring hard rust off tools and made them work again. Just don't drain the motor. Just straight up soak it
Good idea, thanks Peter!
Pour some vinegar in there too it would help a lot
Never tried that before but I’ve had a few people mention the same thing! Thanks for the tip!
Anticipation is killing me. lol
That engine has endured neglect. I know that original 383s and 440s are not as available as they used to be. The old style engines are cool if you can get a good one.
Hoping this one can be saved!
Beer is good and lot's of it.
Yes sir!
I think I would have pressure washed it first then doused it with ATF in the cylinders and right down the manifold. There’s crap all through that block.
On a positive note - no play in the timing chain. WOW! that is one crusty engine.
She’s a clean one owner!
I think the lifter bores might decide it’s fate. they don’t make over sized lifters
100% agree!
I think the only thing you're going to save from there is a bellhousing and maybe some transmission parts bolts and some Hardware you're better off to just go get an engine at a swap meet or a friend there's lots of other better engines to be had
