It was my honor to meet and also attend Church for over 20 years with two of the brave Marines that fought on Iwo Jima. Noble Stiles and Robert 'Bob' Burch, a B.A.R. man. A salute in memory of those two men, sadly now both deceased.
My father was a Marine in the Pacific, serving in the 3rd Marines, 21st regiment. He was in communications on Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima. Never wanting to talk about it, he would only say.... "I was never hit, but I was never so scared in all my life." I lost my dad in 1997. R.I.P. dad.
My Uncle was in the 3rd Marines also, he fought in Bougainville, also two other place over there, I would have to dig up his discharge paper to find the others, he was in artillery.Your Dad, my Uncle and, and my Dad who was wounded at Anzio, Italy, were without a doubt, what Tom Brokaw quoted, "The Greatest Generation"
My uncle was a Corpsman on Iwo Jima. He was never the same after. He was mentally affected as he couldn't save many of the men he treated. This lasted to his death many years later. I hope he is finally able to deal with this horrific event since he has passed on. My utmost respect to those who fought there, died there, and survived.
@@f.k.burnham8491 I can’t imagine how anybody that was on the island could not have some kind of mental or emotional issues afterwards. I wouldn’t be surprised if the sailors on the ships offshore didn’t have some issues as well. Absolutely brutal fight.
The dedication and bravery of the men and women that fought in World War II, especially in the horrendous battles for Guadalcanal, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa I find just unbelievable and inspiring. I joined the Marine Corps after high school after learning about John Basilone years earlier. I really want to go on this annual tour. Semper Fi.
A very moving film...slightly disapointed that the Adm. Chester Nimitz quote was not used to describe the men who took that island. "Uncommon Valor Was a Common Virtue".
My dad turned 21 on Iwo Jima. He was in 5th. He died in 1993 after third cancer. He was sent to Nagasaki after the bomb. He was ruined mentally and physically
It’s sad that the Japanese government has removed the American flag from the memorial atop Mt Suribachi. The island, although a Japanese base now is treated like a shrine for their WWII Soldiers. They forget that American remains also inhabit the island. It’s as if they have desecrated our Marines and Sailors from the greatest generation. Sad, truly sad.
@@JCann there is a annual Pacific war tour that includes visiting Iwo Jima in time for the annual ceremony where the fighting men on both sides are honored and yes, the Japanese flag is at the top of the island because the island is a Japanese island. It is no longer an American island we gave it back just like we did Okinawa. The sailors and Marines that died on that island are not forgotten. Our government gave back the Japanese territories because it’s time to move on. We also returned the Philippines to the Philippine people in fact they share July 4 Independence Day with is! It’s been a long time since the war and Japan has become one of our biggest allies against China and North Korea. I agree it’s tough to let it go and as a Retired Marine, I believe it was a little tougher for me than it might be for the average American! Our government has returned quite a few overseas bases to their countries, and one of the reasons is economic cost a lot of money to keep up the bases transfer personnel in and out, etc. we have to move on at some point
@@jerrodg7768I appreciate the history lesson but I, like you, am a former Marine. Yes the island is a Japanese base which was given back to Japan in 1968. I have no issue with that. We didn’t serve to conquer and take we served to conquer and free. The Japanese government has had a long history of not acknowledging atrocities committed against the peoples of the western pacific, Korea, and China. Currently the one day Iwo Jima (Iwo To) tour has specific requirements of those visiting which are to honor Japanese soldiers still inturned on the island. Again, I have no issues with this. Yet, they neglect to remember and respect the actual pieces of Marines that were unrecoverable not to mention Sgt William H Genaust (a photographer of the flag raising) and countless others buried in caves. All I am saying is, like the Europeans, honor our dead with the flag they served under. Because it represents the freedom the Japanese now enjoy. Our brothers in arms, through their sacrifice, not only preserved Americas freedom but Japans as well.
This should be addressed to the emperor, himself. Without our consideration, his position had every right to have been dishonored and dismantled by us !
... and now we had promoted and supported the rebuilding of their nation back to an enviable status for any nation to be in on this planet. All we ask for, as an ally, is a scrap of whatever turf can be mustered for honoring the fallen. We did it after the Civil War, recognizing both sides in that conflict. I don't see why that can't be done here.
Thank You Services Men and Women of all branches, white man finally realized that we black and Latinos did help build this country called United States of America.
Why is no American flag being flown on Mt. Suribachi now? 🇺🇸Why did we give it back to Japan? We could have let them use it for the radar installation. This is very disrespectful to the men that lost their lives there.🇺🇸
How about the Japanese that died there? War is destructive to both combatants. It’s not about who won it. We lost a lot during the war but we don’t blame the Americans that bomb our cities. Though the Japanese rape and killed our citizens. You need to accept and move on.
I'm enjoying your channel, thank you. >> But... please (please) consider losing the *AI-generated imagery* entirely on future videos. It's unnecessary and does nothing to enhance the narrative or visuals. Respectfully, AI has no place in documentaries such as these in my opinion. Using it as filler for the sake of dramatization just lowers the production value overall. Especially considering how much real-world archival film footage & photography is available on the subject. Other than that... fantastic presentations!

My great uncle was there. He was literally feet away and just outside the photo of when the Flag was raised. That's something I'm very proud of.
Thank you brothers! AND Thank you Jim Nantz!
Where uncommon valour was a common virtue

I can't imagine what our soldiers went through. My neighbor and also our school superintendent survived Iwo.
My father Charles W. Parkhill was a machine gunner with 4th Marine Division taking Iwo Jima
That island belongs to the men who fought and died their. Both nations' flags should stand atop. 🇺🇸🇯🇵
Kurt Cobains grandfather was in the 3rd Marine division.. thank you, Leeland Cobain and all who served Korea

What a slap in the face and disgrace to our men that fought and died, We are not even allowed to fly our flag to honor them!

The amount of blood that soaked the soil one would expect that barren island now would be lush tripical green.
