I have an Ariya too, and love it, but this doesn't entice me at all. If they are going to make a sporty version, they have to go all in. I'd rather switch to the Ioniq 5 N, where you at least you could push the car without cooking the brakes. The biggest issue for me is the brakes.

Have to say Pete the roads in Japan are so well engineered and upkept made for driving. Not sure it would tempt me but seem to be a very competent car. Also great that you commented on the breaking aspect rather than washed over it.
Hi Ped So envious when I started this video, seeing that magnificent view reminded me of our trip some years ago when we visited for the first time with Great Railway Journeys of The World. Love the country and the people. Very interesting to see how formula E has filtered down to this car, almost makes me want to drive one.🤭
This is a spaceship lol and it looks good. But not ready for an actual ev jump yet. A fantastic review and video though Sir Pete! So glad you’ve got this thing going with Nissan! It’s made for some cool videos!
I meant to say that comment was for the GTR video in terms of the top of tree 😎 Still a great video, keep up the great work Pete. Good to see some passion for cats, unfortunately when we are all driving boxes that look the same and electric won't be none of this.
Like the road, have been there testing and luckily saw Mt.Fuji! Depending on cost, it might be nice to have the extra performance but under normal conditions people will be concerned about the brakes before being confident in the performance addition. Nice video, thanks Pete 👏👏
Great opportunity for you to go to Japan pete!! And if I'm honest I'm not a fan of the looks inside is better than the outside + its an EV which I'm not interested in but this looks quite ample BHP for everyday use & what's the range on something like this pete or did you say & i missed that? 🤔 Nice Vlog & amazing opportunity for you!!👌🏻👍🏻
As an owner of a USA version specifically the Evolve + e-4orce which is the 87kw battery pack and as you said this is sufficient power for my city driving. For the regen braking on this particular version it does well but I still miss my full one pedal driving like my LEAF has. One thing I noticed is the brake pedal on the LEAF is firm and my Ariya is a little soft but that didn't have any effect when a large pickup truck ran a red light and I was forced to slam on the brakes stopping what I thought was very short distance avoiding an accident. Americans are such impatient drivers. One thing I also found out one day was that my brake pedal moves towards the floor when I backoff the accelerator pedal and go into regen braking. The more I back off the more it heads to the floor. I read there is some complicated reasons this is happening and the brakes are not being applied, I think.
I had the Nismo Juke RS and loved it not quick off the like but in gear time / mid range it was ballistic Mine had the full Recaro pack inside i think this Ariya will be a good car for the UK
A good-looking car & plenty of go about it! Might be tempted once a few hit the used car mkt! You can leave the sounds in Japan maybe they will add others in time!
Nice review. I just bought an Ariya Platinum+ AWD and like it so far. However, I have a general question. Since my daily commute is over 70 miles, will it be bad for the battery if I keep charging the car full every time? Or should I just charge it to 80% like other EVs recommend? But Ariya doesn't have the feature to set the charge limit like Tesla.
The advice to charge to 80% is mainly to optimise charge times when using public rapid chargers. Charge times slow after 80%. I did a video about this you may find useful 👍 ua-cam.com/video/r1BBNJDnkTQ/v-deo.htmlsi=730tGafTIy2sViFN
The battery is at its happiest when it's closest to 50%. As a reference. If you want to charge to 100%, start driving as soon as it reaches that percentage. It doesn't like to stay at high percentages without being used. Hopefully, the car has a preconditioning function/timer, which charges the car to the desired percentage, just before you leave in the morning. But if you don't need all the range, I would charge till a lower percentage. I hope that helps.
As an Ioniq 5N owner I can assure you, I'm still not bored by that mental Hyundai. This Ariya Nismo seems like a half-baked cookie to me, I'm sure the Nismo engineers could have done so much more... given a bit more freedom by the accountants/management. P.S.: Those roads look awesome.
we own a standard awd Ioniq 5 (320hp 600nm) and we love that thing, would absolutely love the N. I tend to agree this Ariya isnt really doing anything for the nismo brand, 5 seconds to 60 is about the same as our car which is 100bhp down on power so i do think they could have done more to challenge the likes of the 5N... but that would come at the risk of dethroning their own flagship sports car which is obviously the nissan GTR currently.
Hello Peter! now Japan…when you wake up each morning you must have to think where you are! Ths car is a nice EV but needs a set of Brembo’s to get it to slow better…or carbon ceramics. The looks are a tad lumpy and heavy and don’t disguise the weight but the detailing makes it better than the standard car. Clearly it goes well and you enjoyed it for its usability. I think I would go for a EV6GT or the I5N in preference but tests drives of each might give a better perspective. Enjoy Japan….i saw a film of the astonishing IHC hotel in Shanghai Wonderworld….that is place you need to take Tracey…a combined China and Japan Road Trip would be epic driving! Stay safe😃😃😃Richard.
I was surprised to read from Nissan press release that the Ariya Nismo for the EU market has 22 kW on board charging. Comparing with my Ariya Evolve (FWD), it only has 7.2 kW on board charging. 😢
If you really want fast home charging there is a company called Point Guard energy that sell home battery backup equipment. They have a DC home vehicle charging module that goes in their battery stack and it's available in 12.5kw and 25kw options. It will supposedly support DC V2X eventually but in NA it doesn't seem like they have any supported vehicles yet and in the EU only some Nio vehicles are listed on their support page. In NA it's point guard energy, in the EU I think it's called Sig Energy.
the reason the sound isnt coming to the uk is because our milk floats used to sound just like these do! sounds like they have just reprogramed it and added a few cosmetic parts.
I own an Ariya Evolve+ E4orce AWD, 429 hp over 389hp is not big enough gain and it is not fast enough to compete with EV6 GT, Ioniq 5N, or Tesla performance anything. The handling improvements of the Nismo should have been made standard on all the Ariya.
Doesn’t set the world on fire for me. I would be happy with the performance but the inadequacy of the brakes would worry me and the overall handling of the car does seem compromised by its weight. Without wishing to specifically denigrate Nissan I don’t think SUVs and high performance mix , the Hyundai Ioniq 5N being a unique exception.
I really enjoyed driving the fast leaf and I like the interior of the ariya. One thought though, does more corner speed make it more of a drivers car? I would have gone the other way, skinny tyres, less mass and played with the way the car turns. Less aero lift isn't going to be a big asset when stuck behind Margaret doing 40mph on the commute.
Make sure you have a charger at home or at work. Then range is less of a problem. And when leasing it, the residual value shouldn't be a problem either.
I can’t wait to drag race it v my Smart #1 Brabus 428 hp v 429 hp 543 Nm v 600 0-60 3.76 and 12.1 quarter mile. I’m 1,900 kg v 2,200 kg. I think I’m going to waste it 😂
Brakes, yeah - upgrade needed. Acceleration noise? Well I guess that’s part of the sporty aspect isn’t it. Good that these kinds of car can be made, but I feel in UK a NISMO Ariya will have limited appeal, and is probably playing catch-up to the Ioniq5 N; don’t recall any mention of price? Perhaps £10k over 4WD version? And our roads of course! We won’t have such good surfaces that you tested on in Japan; how will that affect ride quality and steering at speed? I’ll watch the UK tests, but I wouldn’t pay the premium over a standard Ariya, just like the Ioniq5.
For the record I owned all EV from Hyundai and PHEV would never own one again. Terrible quality and reliability and dealer experience is sub par. Nissan is more reliable and way better quality and interior space. This vehicle is a solid 10/10.
i suspect nissan probably kept the power down just to keep the car from being better all round than a nissan GTR which is seen as their flagship performance car, i mean the 2024 Nismo GTR is 4x the price, for them to say it handles as good as a GTR and then give it more power than a GTR while being more practical than a GTR... it just might not go down well. At this power it keeps it a firm step down in the order, while a brand like hyundai does not really have flagship petrol performance cars to dethrone unless you count the I20N/I30N but they are generally average new car money so they have no issue with placing the Ioniq 5N on top of the stack.
Looks cool however not that big of a boost of horsepower/torque, and the breaking is concerning. I hope here in the US it'll get the NACS port and new ads for some new features, if not then they'll be giving the lack of attention like their Leaf.
Will be interesting to compare to my Ioniq 5 N (which just arrived). Ariya colour looks good. But I’m not sure they’ve done enough to the Nismo. No real suspension or brake changes. Stiffened up the body? I do like paddle shifts on an EV for brake regen adjustment. No HUD, adjustable suspension or cooled seats on Nismo? Will be good to compare with N on UK roads. Good, fair review. What’s the price?
We’ve currently got an Ariya, only FWD, 87kw Evolve model. She’s certainly lovely to drive, however I find the seats rather lacking in support on the base (sides are not quite deep enough), so if the Nismo version has the same seats, albeit badges Nismo, then I’d be disappointed that they haven’t considered slightly better side thigh support. The rib side support is OK. I am however coming from a Stelvio Quadrifoglio as a second car and a Focus RS MK3 as a weekend car, so my seat preference is always for more side support on the base and on the rib cage!
@@akf2000 no, no sports pack. We did test drive an Evolve e4orce which had the blue seats and sports pack. She was rapid, but I didn’t feel the need for the 4wd and higher performance. Happy with the 320mile range of the FWD version.
Hyundai has the Ionic 5N and 6N, but don't offer a performance SUV yet. I like it that Nissan come with a less powerful car compared to the 650 hp Ionic which in my opinion would be rediculous in a SUV such as the Ariya. It's still a 100hp more than Cupra Born (more than enough power) & Tavascan VZ and VW offers in their 340pk ID GTX. In the end it's all about the performance. I hope this Ariya Nismo will be priced reasonably and a few grand under the pricetag of the Hyundai 5 and 6N, otherwise it will probably still become a hard seller.
A little underwhelmed with what Nissan have done to the Ariya. A kind of luke warm makeover. The wife has the FWD version and as keen car man, I was interested to see what Nismo had done to the Ariya but its just a bit 'meh' with red highlights and some nice wheels. To be honest though, this kind of relative mild performance boost does suit the car. The standard Ariya is such a ponderous drive that it seemed to me, to be the last platform you would make a fast car out of. So possibly 430bhp, is a nice way to top off the Ariya model.
Nissan will do whatever Renault tell them to do, i believe theres some controversy over stated mileage for their EVs, i like its looks,as i do with the Renault equivalent, but until they start giving a 7 years warranty, i think they'll struggle with sales. 👍
A car with any decent level of performance is totally wasted here in central Scotland as all my local roads are heavily potholed, which makes for slow driving and continuous steering corrections to avoid crashing into them.
Well done not giving it stupid power, a great car that handles and overtakes with easy with good range. EV’s are improving at such a rate people are thinking like they do for new PC’s or phones in that should you wait for next years Car as it will be better. I’m on a 2004 build PC because I say every year I’ll get a new one then read up on what is coming next year and think oh that sound great - when I started thinking about a new rig GFX cards were expensive because they had 2GB of onboard ram and ran at X speed, now it’s at 24GB and you really can’t push them enough for them to stutter 😂. Next few years battery tech will march on again and by 2030 be unrecognisable to 2024 just like when we had Nissan leafs doing 89 miles max to a charge in 2012 and scary enough the same car with 120k miles is doing 68 miles and cost buttons to run and wipers and tyres 😂, I do road trips, just did Glasgow to Duxford a few weeks back and always think real world 350 miles without even trying and the cost of the Cars coming down due to battery prices decrease then I’m all in.
Cost ? Most will be leased so wait 3 years and buy one half price or less. Tyres will not be cheap. Personally I would buy the Hyundai or a used Taycan. Speed in EV's isn't needed as you will eat tyres and get bored of looking like a knob racing people off the lights. Its range we need but they can't get much better than 100 kwh packs due to weight. Smaller pack with faster charging I think is what we need.
Would have loved to see red brake calipers. Would have loved to see more HP and they need to take a page from Hyundai N series. Nissan started the EV revolution but somehow, they lost their mojo along the way.
Space ship or Jetsons noises! You give that a miss, however the engine noise like the Hyundai EV5N - I would go with if it was me. However EV is not for me here in Aus. Far too expensive lack of proper charge network and insufficient power grid to support full EV change in any case. I am waiting for the hydrogen from ammonia engines that provide hydrogen combustion from a less hazardous (still toxic as a gas but less explosive) and more energy dense pumpable liquid that does not require the extremely expensive high pressure storage.
What I really dont get is when manufacturers go to all the the trouble of spicing up a car's performance and do nothing with the stock brakes. Do they not consider that stopping the car without it ploughing into a hedge or going straight over the top of a roundabout is enough of a performance priority. Whats the point of being thrilled by acceleration and handling, only to be crapping your pants at the first few hard stops. Totally spoils the enjoyment of a car if you have no confidence in the brakes.
@@PetrolPed I agree. As an owner of 2023 Ariya Evolve with 23K mikes and 2024 Ioniq 5 SEL with 500 miles, the brake system in the Ariya is not great vs the Ioniq 5 SEL. To hear that the brake system in the Nismo is not great is disappointing for a performance vehicle. 😢
"it really didn't have the performance or the kind of driver oriented characteristics that I look for in a car". How strange for a 2 ton SUV! I just don't get why people want sports car handling and performance from chunky SUVs. I have an Ariya....but if I wanted a "sporty" car I wouldn't have an SUV.
I don't know... I think Nissan went a bit too conservative again with a Nismo. Almost just a glorified body kit. Imo it's not going to compete at all with the EV6 gt, Ioniq 5N or Genesis performance equivalent. For being nearly the same price as those, I'd expect at least tuner brakes and a tuner suspension. Imo the only performance oriented EV that does speed vs handling well is the Polestar 2 performance. It's quick, but not as quick as the monster power EVs, but they invested in putting Brembos and ohlins on it.
Cool review buddy, looks like a real good car for our market in the UK. These EV's are just getting better and better
I would say the opposite
I have the standard Ariya and love it, the Nismo is definitely in my future
I have an Ariya too, and love it, but this doesn't entice me at all. If they are going to make a sporty version, they have to go all in. I'd rather switch to the Ioniq 5 N, where you at least you could push the car without cooking the brakes. The biggest issue for me is the brakes.
I have two Ariya in this time I hope take a nismo for a future because is a fantastic car , thank you sir for the magic review
My pleasure 👍

Why am l thinking of an adult Joe90 when you're driving that car in NISMO mode. 😂
Now we know more, i must say that it's priced very well! 13K below the 5N. I am seriously considering ordering one....
Morning mate glad to see Nissan is trying to stay alive
need to add Japan to list of countries i would hope to visit one day
Nissan will do whatever Renault tell them to do, i believe theres some controversy over stated mileage for their EVs, i like its looks,as i do with the Renault equivalent, but until they start giving a 7 years warranty, i think they'll struggle with sales. 👍
Renault does no longer have they superior stock share on them that they had anymore so Nissan now can do whatever they want.
@@Cosmycal oh cool 👍
Doesn't show enough commitment in my eyes, maybe Nissan will apply the Nismo treatment to the new electric GTR they're threatening to launch.
Would be nice to have choice of noises...silent, spaceship, petrol, fighters jet etc :)
😂👍
I love my ariya, which isn’t a performance nizmo, but my lord this version looks awful in that colour and them wheels 😂.
Superb review Ped and stunning location but there’s nothing I like about the Ariya. Nissan GTR anyone?
Fair enough!
Would have loved to see red brake calipers. Would have loved to see more HP and they need to take a page from Hyundai N series. Nissan started the EV revolution but somehow, they lost their mojo along the way.
Me too 👍
Space ship or Jetsons noises!
Time for a new channel - Electron Ed... 🙂
How can you say nismo with the likes of the ioniq 5n around?
How did they not look at the 5N and realize they need to go back to the drawing board?
I know what you mean 😬
Needs brembo brakes
I agree 👍
DO a comparison with Model Y Performance
My guess how that would go is. In a straight line the MYP would easily win. Different story when you get to a corner 😜
best drivers ev? are ya kidding me, have you even heard of the Ioniq 5N. thats a freakin riot.
Watch the video 🤷♂️
Hyundai could be prettier, but that looked good compare to previous nissan cars
H0w did u get that ģig?wow
Volvo EX30 Performance smokes everything so far
I think the Ioniq 5N might have something to say about that 🤔😂
@@PetrolPed Totally forgot about this nasty little beast.😅But 15K more for 0.2 seconds hurts me too much😂
My only gripe is the cheap looking brake calibers. What ever happened to the red Nismo brake calipers? Hello Nissan!😂
I agree 👍
@@PetrolPed
I agree. 😢
Nissan, and the Japanese car industry in general need to really, really, REALLY up their game.
Shame it isn’t coming to the US.
Unbelievably bad stats for what will probably cost like 60k.
electrol Ped
The ONVO L60 will destroy Tesla in China
Elliot Richards on EVs

Needs to be a hybrid EV is limited plus we all dont have drive ways
I'm afraid you won't be able. To have much fun on our roads
Disappointing for Nismo. Hyundai has perfected this ev market
I see you keep having to twitch the steering wheel
I hope the NISMO Ariya comes to the States. Nissan can take the Nismo Z back and give us this. instead. 😆
Sadly not plans at the moment 😢
but i like this car
Serious Face!
😂😂
More money! Anyone can do this, if they throw more money at it and charge must more money.
