    You chose the wrong SD -you chose the one for the population and not the sample. If you did it manually you will see that the other one -the bigger one. Although I find it weird as dividing by n should give you a smaller number compared with n-1. I think its to do with subtracting a bigger mean and the using the square root of that.

    • @MrTompkins
      @MrTompkins  4 роки тому

      When I made this video, the S1 A level paper did not require students to choose between population and sample formulae for standard deviation, and their formula booklet only gave the one for population. So it was the correct choice for this paper! That said, we are using all the available data here, and not sampling from a larger data set, or making any inferences on shopping baskets generally, and so the population SD would appear to be the most appropriate in any case.

    What is sx if it is not a standard deviation ? if someone can tell please

    • @MrTompkins
      @MrTompkins  4 роки тому +1

      It’s also standard deviation, but has a slightly different formula. Sigma x is the standard deviation of a population (a complete large data set) and Sx is the standard deviation of a sample. The first uses n as the divisor and the second uses n-1, and therefore ends up being slightly larger. It’s analogous to using (n+1)/2 for finding a median whereas for large data sets, you just use n/2. Strictly speaking you are meant to pick the right type of standard deviation to match the data you are working with, but for A Level they ignore this and students are normally just taught to use the first one. Mark schemes tend to give full credit for either so don’t stress about it too much!
