Thank you so much. I have been spending more than 1 months to learn how to create stacked relative bar chart. Your instruction is so clear and easy to follow. I can do it myself now. Thank you.
This worked really well, thank you! One place where I got stuck was that the variables I wanted to graph were "scale" measure; they needed to be "ordinal" for this to work, which was easy to change in the variable view.
thanks. I'm happy SPSS doesn't change much in the basic statistics, so I don't have to make a new video each year :-) But for this I would have guessed they had come up with an easier method by now, but to my knowledge this isn't the case yet. Good luck with your study/research
I want to thank you with all my heart for this video. I needed an explanation very urgently. You made it very easy and simple. Thank you very much!! Greetings from Venezuela
@@stikpet Hi I typed all sorts of crazy things but the one I recall typing that brought me to your video was "using bar charts to compare several variables in spss"
Glad it helped. Thanks for subscribing that really helps me (need to get to 1000 subs in order to be eligible for the youtube partnerprogram, and only have 781 now).
THANK YOU!!!! This is amazing. I can't tell you how long I was searching through various UA-cam videos to figure this out. So many of them simply share how to enter data from a ranking question -- that's actually how I found this, from one of your other videos (ua-cam.com/video/zPpoYa2w3i4/v-deo.html). I'm resting easy tonight because of you!
Thank you so much for this tutorial, it is amazing (even at the age of 7 years)!! One question: When I am trying to stack the variables at the end, I do not have the category "statistics" and if I try to stack one of the other categories I get an error saying "the chart has to have an X-axis". Do you know why?
I'm glad SPSS doesn't change each version, saves me from having to create new videos each time :-). They apparantly did change the label 'statistics' (at about 2:42 in the video) to 'Column' , hope that solves the issue.
First of all thanks a lot for such an informative video. I need to know if I have to make stacked bar chart of various facilities but of two hospitals, how to do that?
You could make one for each facility showing the results for both hospitals: ua-cam.com/video/P38-UDrzIgA/v-deo.html Not sure if it is possible otherwise with SPSS...
Thank you, this was a very helpful explanation! I'm just wondering if there is any way to change the order of those color explanations on the right side of the chart without it affecting the order of the bars? Like if in the case of this video I wanted everything else to stay exactly the same but wanted the list on right to start with 'fully agree'.
Thanks, glad the video was helpful. You can change the order of the stacking and the order of the categories itself For a brief moment in the video at 2:38 you see the categories tab, where you can sort the categories in any order you like. At the same place, on top it should have 'Variable' with a pull down option next to it. If you change that it should give you the option to change the order of the bars. Hope this is what you were looking for.
@@stikpet I explained the issue kinda confusingly, sorry. What I meant was not exactly the order of the bars but the order of the categories inside the bars. As I wanted, for example, the yellow 'fully agree' category to be the first from the right in the bars (like it is in this) but also the first from the top on the explanation list. Thanks anyway! That what you explained was also something that I had to figure out previously :D
@@nellih4520 Ah, so you want to also be able to change the order of the legenda on the right-side from bottom to top into top to bottom? Not sure if that is possible. Hi. Great video! One question: I have successfully generated my bar chart, but i have my strongly agree bars on the far right (where you have your blue ones) position, instead of on the far left (as you have in yellow). Do you know how i can flip them around? Let me know if this doesn't make sense! Thank you very much. Ben
Glad you like the video. It should be possible. For a brief moment in the video at 2:38 you see the categories tab, where you can sort the categories in any order you like. On a side note, UA-cam has cancelled my partner program since I don't have enough subscribers, so it would really help if you subscribe 😉
Sorry one more question - is it possible to change the order of the categories. So, moving 'the teacher was able to motivate me' to the top of the graph, for example
At the same place as where you changed the order of the categories, on top it should have 'Variable' with a pull down option next to it. If you change that it should give you the option to change the order of the bars. Thanx for the sub.
I followed this exactly and even did the copy paste for the value labels and it still says it can't generate the table and says this: TABLE: The category labels cannot be repositioned because the value labels of several categorical variables conflict with each other. I dont understand what I can do differently to fix this
strange. Just tested it myself again in SPSS version 29 and this should still work. Hard to tell what the problem might be without being able to replicate the error. Perhaps you can send me the file?
Glad it helped. On a side note, UA-cam has cancelled my partner program since I don't have enough subscribers (currently around 803, should be 1000 😞), so it would really help if you subscribe (and all your friends) 😉
Thanks for the great tutorial! I have a question: I would like my x-axis to represent "Counts" and next to the bar in the diagramm I would like to put the percent%. is there a way to do it?
unfortunately, I wouldn't know if that's possible. You can stack the counts instead of the percentages by simply leaving 'count' in the tables (at about 1:36 in the video I swop the count for percent). The x-axis will then be counts, but I don't see a way to then also add the percentages in. The other way around is possible. If you create the table, based on the counts, then the diagram, and then when you double-click in the chart editor you can change it to percent. In the menu at 2:45 you should then also adjust the 'Percent' to 'Y-axis'. The bars will then be percentages. But you can then click also in the chart editor on Elements and then Show Data Labels. The original counts will then be shown in each bar bit.
denada(?) :-) On a side note, UA-cam has cancelled my partner program since I don't have enough subscribers (currently around 748, should be 1000 😞), so it would really help if you subscribe (and all your friends) 😉
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. It indeed seems that the SPSS base version does not have Custom Tables. The documentation is a bit unclear but I guess the standard, professional and premium versions do. In the subscription version it seems also that an additional charge is required. Not sure if by using syntax it would be possible to do this (using base only), but perhaps copying the data to Excel and then creating the chart will then be easier.
I figured out an alternative method to get the same result, using 'restructure'. Not sure if this option is in SPSS base, but hopefully it is and then it should work. The video is available at ua-cam.com/video/l55pUgq5AA0/v-deo.html
Thank you! Do you know how to move the legend from the right side to the bottom of the chart? I can't move it. The only thing I can do with the legend is to hide or unhide it....
If you are in the chart editor and click on the legend once, then click and hold on the border of the outlined legend you should be able to drag it to where you want it. It's not so clean but it's an option :-)
the custom tables is as it appears indeed an add-on (www.ibm.com/products/spss-statistics/pricing) and could be that the student version doesn't include it. Perhaps the free trial version does?
I have many variables. Why does it only display 8 of my variables when I follow the steps of this video? Is there a limit or am I doing something wrong?
Not sure if there is a limit, I just made one with 13 so more than 8. Is it showing more than 8 stacked bars, and simply not labelling them all? There might not be enough space to show the label for each stacked bar. I had to make my diagram taller before it showed all of them.
Please Help: I have 20 variables of interest but when I select the bar graph option after highlighting all wanted data, it continues working with and displays only 11 variables for me. How can I fix this?
One thing could be that not all variable names are shown. Did you count the number of bars? It could be then an easy fix to simply make the diagram a bit wider (or longer) and the other names should then also appear. Hope this solves the issue.
It took me a while to figure it out but probably you 'forgot' to hide the column headers (see 1:42 - 1:47). In that case you indeed get 'column' instead of 'statistics' but it doesn't matter much. You can still select 'stack' in the 'column' part then. Hope this was it.
that's odd. Are those variables that you are not seeing perhaps simply empty? Or do you spot anything else that would make those different from the others? Perhaps do a quick frequency table on them first?
