A little story for you to read before bedtime: Lying in your bed. It's any other ordinary night. You are fast asleep. But, for some reason, you wake up in the middle of the night. You think you hear something moving in the other room. Curious, you get up, turning all the lights on only to find the house is empty - as you left it. You shrug it off. You turn off the lights and return to bed. All is quiet, for a moment, but there it is again; you hear something moving in the next room. You frown, you aren't imagining it you tell yourself. You get up again and turn on the lights, but nothing is there. Perplexed, you turn off the lights and as you turn to your bedroom you hear footsteps behind you. You spin round and frantically flick the light switch to no avail, all you can see is darkness as your eyes have not yet adjusted. You freeze, glaring into the darkness scanning for movement and listening for the slightest sound. A few tense moments pass and the light flickers on in the living room. With your body tensed up and feeling nervous, you slowly edge back into the room looking once more for the possible intruder but find no one. Filled with anxiety and uncertainty, reluctantly you turn around to return to bed; not quite sure how to explain what you're experiencing, you reassure yourself you are safe and that you will feel better if you just go to bed. Then suddenly, your bedroom door slams shut right in front of you. You let out a cry as you frantically spin round and dash towards the front door. Suddenly realization hits you, the door is locked and you need a key to open it. With your back against the door, you hold your breath as you hear the sound of a door creaking open from beyond the corridor leading to the living room. Dead silence fills the air. Eventually, you creep away from the locked door down the dark corridor, towards the living room door threshold; you slowly peek your head around the corner and see your bedroom door open ajar. Your eyes lock on to your keys resting on the bedside table in the bedroom ahead. You hastily move through the living room, frantically scanning around you. Then you skitter through the bedroom doorway and dash towards the bedside table, grabbing the keys. Immediately after picking up the keys, darkness descends upon your home as all light sources die out in an instant. Silence follows. Your eyes widen as a shiver runs up your spine; you hear a quick flurry of footsteps coming from the living room behind you. Then the house falls quiet once again. A fleeting moment passes but feels like forever, you haven't moved, your eyes are fixed on the narrow opening of the bedroom door leading out into the living room. Reluctantly you edge towards the door, taking half breaths as your heart pounds against your chest. You reach the door, reaching out through the dark, using your hands to guide you. You pause for a moment. Composed, you peer with one eye around the door apex. you can make out the silhouettes of the furniture and household items, nothing out of place. Then gently, you push open the door, creating a quiet creaking sound which pierces the silence. With the door open, you wind around the door, slowly creeping through the dark living room. Your head twitching from left to right as you scan every shadow and silhouette in the room. Suddenly a loud thud breaks the silence as you trip over some boxes you had left by the corridor, followed by a clink as the keys slip through your fingers. You shiver in terror as you frantically sweep and pat your hands along the carpet searching for the keys. After a moment you see the keys in front of you and reach out to grab them. With the keys now in your hands, your eyes widen, as you realize the keys were not resting on the floor but suspended above it... you scramble to your feet and bolt for the door breathing heavily you fight with the keys in the darkness trying different keys on the lock. you can hear a quick succession of footsteps behind you getting closer and louder. You begin wincing in terror as you try again with another key; the door unlocks with a click. You freeze in terror as the footsteps stop. Whimpering you feel something close behind you. A breath against the hairs on the back of your neck. "Goodnight" ~?
