i too kept discovering new Sam songs and they all used to become my new favorite... i think the best one ever is a live version of Postcard (jerry run concert) and also a live version of trapeze swinger (kcrw) i have the pleasure of saying that i will be going to my very first I&W concert in Belgium on the 15th of Nov... after more than ten years of loyal listening. just keep doing what you do Sam, it's magic !
This is the quintessential performance of this song. also... I remember watching this on my phone in 2010 and being impressed by the quality. My how times have changed on that front
The end gives me chills everytime, this live version takes a song on the album that is so moving and changes the whole feeling behind it. Iron and Wine, Bon Iver, and Ray Lamontage give me hope for music. Peace be the Journey friends.
best freaking song ever..studio version fantastic and slow and great rhythm..this version beyond great...totally soothing..relaxing and makes for a happy day..all day long..like another comment..i can listen on repeat for hours and do .. slide guitar dude is awesome...Paul Niehaus is his name..thxs iron and wine ..never heard an 8 person band sound so good together
This is amazing, the vocal harmonies and the band are great, they changed a freaking depressing as hell song into a cheerful optimistic jam, the extended breakdown with the violin blew my stoned mind out of this world. Can't believe it took me 4 years to find this video.
i saw them play at club revolution, valentine's day, front row, and they ended the major setlist with this. fucking blew me away and haunts me in the best way.
I disagree. I think it's incredibly sad. He mixes that inherent sadness of the lyrics w accompanying music that feels "safe", somehow. Together, it feels bittersweet, which is the best emotion.
yeah, that's his primary acoustic for live performances, from what I've seen. But he's also used many manufacturers of electrics(Used a gubson SG on Letterman).
@barrytam20 i agree with you 100% it also adds a kind of jam band feel to the song. Really like as i think sam is not credited enough with his musicianship and overall simplicity and catchiness to his chords and melodies
I hear you on that one. I have two of their Live Albums, but alas this track does not appear on either one. The original version doesn't do it for me the same after I head this...
I am a huge fan of Iron and Wine. I love all of Sam Beam's Materials. Thank you for Posting this! Would you mind checking my stuff I wrote them myself...? I think it's definitely up your alley... and you will not regret it :)
Actually, if you listen to the lyrics carefully, it's a joyful song....not a somber one, and ther person that went WHOOO in the middle of the song.......maybe they were just feeling the power of the Holy Spirit, and you can't fault them for that. So much for tolerance.
I'd love him to perform a studio album full of early songs played at quicker tempo, and with a full band, as he did with this. I love mellow Iron and Wine, but this version is so much better than the original.
It's cool but a little fast... It seems like it's lost it's impact a little bit, even at what I thought was the most powerful point about half way thru. It seems a little more commercialized, but I appreciate it nonetheless.
This is easily my favorite rendition of the piece, but I wish the audience would shut the hell up. The most somber part of the song and some drunken loud mouth decides it would be a good time to yell at the top of her lungs. Who cheers at, "Cried 'til the morning?"
this may be my favorite song of all time. and the first time i heard it was 7:57 ago.
I was at this show and it was absolutely the most amazing thing ever. This is my favorite song of all time.
It's been 9 years and I'm back again! Bonnaroo 2022 is happening!
The original version of this song is great, but this version is freaking unbelievable. I could listen to this on repeat all day.
Agreed/Same
This song, this version especially, still amazes me. ❤
I was that in that crowd. Can’t believe it’s been this many years. First time I saw the band live. Highlight of the festival for sure.
this is so insanely beautiful. the original version brought tears to my eyes and now this just makes me smile.
they're so unbelievably amazing

this is my favorite performance of this song. i love love love it.
His expression is just so melancholy, it's fantastic. This is a flawless version of this song and right now I'm listening to it 24/7.
I always feel like I want to cry by the time this song is through. That's a sign of a freaking *great* song.
This is the quintessential performance of this song.
also... I remember watching this on my phone in 2010 and being impressed by the quality. My how times have changed on that front

It´s mothers day... and this song crushes my heart.

Sell this version on iTunes man !!!!!!!!!!
I always come back to this life version. Amazing song. Amazing performance.
This is amazing, the vocal harmonies and the band are great, they changed a freaking depressing as hell song into a cheerful optimistic jam, the extended breakdown with the violin blew my stoned mind out of this world. Can't believe it took me 4 years to find this video.

My absolute favorite Iron and Wine song
truly one of my top 5 songs
This gave me goosebumps! Man I love Bonnaroo!
He brings soul with his magic fingers
Awesome play. They also did a spectacular job on Austin City Lim. Great to hear this music during tough times.
What a beautiful man. Folk always! ❤
love that song...
excellent incredible harmony
Wow. Love you guys. So glad I tripped across your beautiful sounds.
Beautiful. Can't wait to see them.
Absolutely LOVE the new way they play the song. Thanks!
tfw you find yourself in this video 12 years later
my god i can't believe i skipped out on bonnaroo this year. I WILL be there next year and you better be as well Sam!
Wish there were a recording of this version of the song
the ending instrumental music is totally awesome...
thats why this is my favorite live version the jam session is awesome
Me too! Iron & wine is my chill music
Sublime. Thanks for posting.
Scottish fan!
thats magic
outro is awesome
It may just be a sibling thing, but Sarah and Sam's voices harmonize gorgeously.
i saw them play at club revolution, valentine's day, front row, and they ended the major setlist with this.
fucking blew me away and haunts me in the best way.
Heh, Iron & Wine 2008 covers Iron & Wine 2002.
Great song and great performance! Utterly unexpected though.
What a song man. Crazy hard. Crazy deep
the beard just simply makes the video for me. great song
The guy who disliked this video definitely can't grow a beard.
i cant find this version anywhere, i want it oh so desperately. i've watched this video so many times, im beginning to think its unhealthy
pretty amazing how this has evolved from the original recording.
great post, man.
love to ya, and thanks
I listen to rap mostly but oh dayum these dudes ROCKED that tent lol soul a fied amazing what you find by mistake. Gladly I did.
Exceptional…
Cold Weather Company - Upward Over The Mountain (Iron & Wine Cover)
check out this cover!
16 years ago. Only 800 and some likes?? Thats wild
this version takes all the sadness out of it...damn...totally different vibe all jazzed up.
I disagree. I think it's incredibly sad. He mixes that inherent sadness of the lyrics w accompanying music that feels "safe", somehow. Together, it feels bittersweet, which is the best emotion.
The words have a profundity at any speed.
yeah, that's his primary acoustic for live performances, from what I've seen. But he's also used many manufacturers of electrics(Used a gubson SG on Letterman).
Awesome songwriter
@barrytam20 I normally dislike slide guitar but this was incredible.
This version of the song rules.
The pedal steel, it is THE sexy!
David Foster Wallace on the slide guitar.
liked this comment awhile ago but back to see the vid again and you totally nailed it my dude lmao RIP DFW love from Chicago!
This is the best version of Upward over the mountain. I could kill to know if there is a cleaner version of this song
iirc this was the first year they released soundboards of shows after the fact. its probably available.
Can someone send me tabs for the lead guitar of this version? I love it so much.
wow, I actually like the sped up version a little better. didn't expect to
I am a huge fan of Iron and Wine. I love all of Sam Beam's Materials. Thank you for Posting this! Would you mind checking my stuff I wrote them myself...? I think it's definitely up your alley... and you will not regret it :)
UA-cam wants this in better quality. Dear Internet, please help UA-cam out.
I'm pretty sure at least 40,000 of these views are from me
I wish I could know the chords to this song on guitar for this version:( beautifully crafted!
isn't it still just the same fingering as the normal version (just bumped up three frets?) - e minor, c maj, g maj, f# sustain/d major
@TheIorfino He's done some collaborations with Calexico.
so good...4:40
@sora1995KH true my friend
Still the best live song ever recorded (if the standard is it's comparative quality to the studio).
@BMWfinatiq4ever No, the guy from The Hangover looks like him.
the mans a genius
Actually, if you listen to the lyrics carefully, it's a joyful song....not a somber one, and ther person that went WHOOO in the middle of the song.......maybe they were just feeling the power of the Holy Spirit, and you can't fault them for that. So much for tolerance.
Context clarification for the win!!
@marsman888 really? i thought the slide guitar guy killed it
*insert Zach Galifinakis smile and nod meme at **3:50*
I'd love him to perform a studio album full of early songs played at quicker tempo, and with a full band, as he did with this. I love mellow Iron and Wine, but this version is so much better than the original.
Ooooh I like the harmonies in this version but I prefer the song at a slower pace.
Who is the guy at the end of the song playing that instrument?
THE ZITAR MASTA
sitar was a nice addition
@dinkus92 its probably the beard
@dudewtf1776 I think thats his sister.
Is that David Foster Wallace on lead guitar?
Isn't the steel guitar player in Calexico?
He looks like the guy from the hangover
It's cool but a little fast... It seems like it's lost it's impact a little bit, even at what I thought was the most powerful point about half way thru. It seems a little more commercialized, but I appreciate it nonetheless.
Who is the woman singing with him?
Sarah Beam, his sister.
the presence of the woman is key
this kinda feel like the 2000 centuries hippi music
This is easily my favorite rendition of the piece, but I wish the audience would shut the hell up. The most somber part of the song and some drunken loud mouth decides it would be a good time to yell at the top of her lungs. Who cheers at, "Cried 'til the morning?"
Couldn't agree more, hate how the audience always feel entitled to shout when there is a quiet part
A drunk one.
Also, the version on the Live from Bonnaroo album is even better than this one. Has a better beat to it.
I believe he uses taylor.
dude whos the violenist chick? she is hott!
that looks like a gibson archtop to me.
@thearchangelmichae01 nah it's more folk
Am I the only one that teared up and cried? :(
Yes
