Hey great video. We live in Utah where Rosemary does not grow through the winter. So, we tried the dehydrator method last year which has worked. But we eventually had some mold growing on the dehydrated rosemary needles later in the winter. Has anyone had this problem? Suggestions on storage? More dehydration? Thanks.
Hey Michael, with the mold, I've seen that where the Rosemary either isn't dehydrated all the way, or, its a really moist environment and the dried Rosemary is actually pulling moisture out of the air.
When you say mold, what did the mold look like? Little white fuzzy things on the ends on the stem side? I looked at that under a microscope, and it looks like that is the male portion of the plant. When you look at it under a microscope, you will see two white fuzzy pods on each side of the main stem, at the base of the leaves. Not every leaf will have them, but I noticed that every 4 to 5 inches, you will see these white fuzzy object coming out of the stem.

Hey Sarah, don't dispair! All three of those plants should be perennial where you live. Repotting should be easy. Just get a quality organic mix, make sure the root ball is loosened, and pot to the same level as they are now, just in a bigger pot. Don't over water, and place in a somewhat sheltered area! Should be good to go!
@@sarahfaye7953 repotting isn't as severe as pruning. You're not actually doing anything to the plant. If anything, you're giving it a bigger growing area and more of a buffer towards extreme temperature swings! Repotting isn't really an issue. Just don't over water as the temperatures dip down and the plants are slowing their growth. :)

The thicker stems can be used as a skewer for meat when grilling. Also good in marinades with garlic black pepper, red wine vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and olive oil. Best on beef or wild game such as venison. It’s a hearty herb
You definitely can, but you don't have to. If grown organically, without chemicals or pesticides, there's no need to wash Rosemary.... or any herb really!

Georgia gets a lot of rain during the winter months, where I am at, I fear that rosemary would get drowned out. So far since February we have gotten two bonus months worth if rainfall. I go to the grocery store to dry rosemary instead. The rosemary at the store turns black so I get the non blackened ones and those turn black the next day. I'm new to this and have absolutely no idea what is going on. Should I stop buying rosemary from that location? Washing then waiting for the rosemary to dry ends with them going black as well.
Oh man Caelestis...you need to grow your own. No way should they turn black like that! Its March now and I have Rosemary that I cut and dried in NOVEMBER and it's still quite green. We get a ton of rain as well, I would just combat it by either growing it in a raised bed situation or a container with excellent drainage. Its really quite a vigorous plant once it gets established and the amount you can harvest off of one plant is astonishing!

Hello! I tried the dehydrator method and put them in a jar connected to the stem. I just pulled some out and noticed a few that had a fuzzy stem. Is this an early sign of mold? If it is, is all of it ruined since it was in a jar together?😢

Outdoor or indoor Angelica? Try spraying them with water if outside, that usually works. For indoor ones, if you can take them outside briefly, the whitefly usually take off. Sticky tape traps also seem to work.

Hi Kaitlyn! I'm in Canada and I have never brought it inside. Albeit, we are on the west coast, so it is quite mild. Rosemary is quite tolerant of cold zones with most varieties sold in your area probably hardy to Zone 5. If you are bringing it inside, you can definitely harvest no problem all year. You can actually harvest when the plant is cold and dormant....its the time BEFORE dormancy that is the most challenging because the act of cutting causes the plant to branch out new growth. That new growth will freeze and die if you do that too late in the season. Indoors, you should be ok though!
I think I have done a huge mistake. We have one massive rosemary plant in the garden which branched off to all sides, and I cut right into a very thick branch. I hope this won't kill the plant... It also has a lot of woody small branches underneath and I'm not sure if I should just leave them be or cut them back?
Dang....ok. What I would do it give it a heavy, good watering. A nice mulch, and then observe. No more cutting until you can be certain the plant is fixing itself and starting to regrow. Let me know how it goes!!
Sorry didn't check back on this video, the rosemary bush survived and thrives 😁 It grew new branches and we always have more than we could use in the kitchen 👍🏻
I've always picked it washed it and dried it but I saw a video where I'm pretty sure I saw a guy saying the taste was better if it was blanched first. Has anyone heard of this or tried this? The video was playing in the background so I wasn't focusing on it and I left in my browser window thinking I would watch it later and make sure I was hearing him correctly but it somehow got shut down and I've never found it again.
Blanching is usually done with vegetables to retain their color and vibrancy, but I've never heard of it being done with herbs, especially rosemary. Now I have to try fellow Jeff! :-)

Same here. I'm in Victoria, BC Canada and mine grows all through the winter too! Eventually, like all shrubs or trees they will outgrow their pots... Just gotta replace them with me cuttings, no other option unfortunately
@@scrappydappydoo I took it out of the pot, cut it into 3 pieces (large plants), planted one in the ground in my front yard, one in the back yard, and the other in the same pot. It all died. Since then I learned that you can't separate the mother plant :D I've starting new plants this year and they all look great :D
Even though Rosemary is a perennial in most parts of the world, it’s not in New England unless you grow in pots and them protect them from a harsh winter. I’m in zone 5 and usually lose my Rosemary 😢
I come from Iceland and I managed to keep my Rosmary year around by keeping them inside in my house :DD I do need plant light in the winter though because our winters are very very dark :(

More drying may help. Store in a jar and check for moisture every few days. If you notice moisture then dry more
I add a desiccant and store mine (after dehydrating) in glass jars. Look up moisture packets or silica desiccant for food storage. Good luck!

I keep my leaves whole and then grind them when I need them.

Sorry didn't check back on this video, the rosemary bush survived and thrives 😁 It grew new branches and we always have more than we could use in the kitchen 👍🏻

I never do. I feel like it would mold if you tried to keep it long term
I've always picked it washed it and dried it but I saw a video where I'm pretty sure I saw a guy saying the taste was better if it was blanched first.
Has anyone heard of this or tried this?
The video was playing in the background so I wasn't focusing on it and I left in my browser window thinking I would watch it later and make sure I was hearing him correctly but it somehow got shut down and I've never found it again.
Blanching is usually done with vegetables to retain their color and vibrancy, but I've never heard of it being done with herbs, especially rosemary. Now I have to try fellow Jeff! :-)
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I have some rosemary that I am going to dry tonight - I guess I could try part of it blanched but I have never blanched anything so I don't know how long it needs to be ?submerged? in the ?boiling? ?hot? water or if you just pour it over?
Maybe I can find a decent video on blanching vegetables to figure out how long or what you are looking for to know whether it is blanched enough

In SC my rosemary grows all year - I planted it in a very large pot and now it is overflowing - I started selling it but the more I cut the more it grows :D What can I do now? should I take it out of the huge pot and try to repot it #TheRipeTomatoFarms
Same here. I'm in Victoria, BC Canada and mine grows all through the winter too! Eventually, like all shrubs or trees they will outgrow their pots... Just gotta replace them with me cuttings, no other option unfortunately

@@scrappydappydoo I took it out of the pot, cut it into 3 pieces (large plants), planted one in the ground in my front yard, one in the back yard, and the other in the same pot. It all died. Since then I learned that you can't separate the mother plant :D I've starting new plants this year and they all look great :D
Even though Rosemary is a perennial in most parts of the world, it’s not in New England unless you grow in pots and them protect them from a harsh winter. I’m in zone 5 and usually lose my Rosemary 😢
I come from Iceland and I managed to keep my Rosmary year around by keeping them inside in my house :DD I do need plant light in the winter though because our winters are very very dark :(
You can dry them in the microwave for two sets of thirty seconds.
You really shouldn’t microwave anything. It’s going to destroy beneficial nutrients.

What a waste of electricity! Air or Sun dry it, much more natural and free.
