Thank you for posting this. I have never fixed a lawnmower before, and mine was a little different than yours. But I managed to hook it up. Your very last advice turned out to be the most important. I almost gave up! But then I remembered to tighten the lever, and voilà! IT WORKS!!! 😁🎉
Perplexed for a couple of days. That little rubber cap escaped my attention. Popped right out. Glad you mentioned how to deal with that second cable running through the cap. I think this is doable. Hope I can barrow the needle nose vice grip from my son. The spring was difficult to remove and I can see how it will be a challenge to get back on. Thanks, tons for this video!
Use the slack to turn the spring "upside-down" so the spring hook curves towards you and hook it on the bottom side of the lever, then flip the spring around so it's hooked "right side" up on the lever. Took just a few minutes to remove the old and feed/attach the new. No brute strength required, just a little ingenuity.
Exactly like I wound up doing it- works like a charm! Another way to visualize it: hold spring under lever, cable end toward you, hook end going back and up over the lever. End of hook will be positioned at attachment hole, let spring drop down and around, spring loop should go right into hole.
After struggling trying to put the spring in the way the video described. I started thinking about the show on Netflix called Stranger Things, and thought about the Upside Down world and that’s when it hit me! Try attaching the spring by flipping it and attaching it from outside the deck! Worked the first try!!!
My wonderful wife loves using this mower to mow and mulch/pick up leaves! This evening she told me the self propel wasn’t working. My cable was broken just like yours! So, rather than wait in line to get the shop to fix it, I now know how to fix it! That way she keeps doing what she loves and I don’t have to push the mower! Did I mention I bought an electric start Toro for her birthday? Am I a smart husband ,or what? Thanks for the video. It was very well done?
You are genius. I also bought a electric start mower for the gf. She never used it so it back fired. Lol. Glad it is working out for you. Hopefully , the repair goes smooth. The spring is the only hard part. Just be patient. Good luck.
Ditto a comment below. If you ever update this (or your other one) please show where the cable attaches at the top. Secondly, since it's difficult to move stuff around to feed the new spring in from the top, couldn't the cable assembly just be fed from the bottom so only the cable,(not the spring) has to go through the hole in the deck? just one other comment. Thanks for making it a quick tutorial. Sometimes I have to run UA-cam at 1.75x speed. On yours, I almost need to slow it down. Good work. I'm subscribed.
Thank you so much for this video!!! I was able to fix my mower today using the steps that you showed here. I was not able to slide the old cable into the larger hole no matter how I tried it would not move. My solution was to forcefully pull it out using wire cutters and excessive force. Then the next thing that helped immensely was to bend the tip end of the new spring outward so it could slide into the hole at an angle without having to twist the spring down too far. I was able to install the new spring with my fingers. Lastly I did not cut the zip ties holding the old cable but instead slid the cables out and into the zip tie.
Thanks for the video, the spring was really hard to replace. I ended up taking the 3 bolts off the side and was able to secure it. Funny thing is, when I push down on the handle, the rear wheels don't move, but if I pull up on it, the wheels move, so it's doing the opposite. I have no clue what happened. I put the spring on the same way it was on before.
A suggestion that worked for me - bend the hook outward slightly - makes it MUCH easier. Wrestled with it an hour then tried bending and done in a minute.
Awesome video I just snapped mine recently and I'm looking for the correct part number and a location to purchase it from if you would put a part number or a location that would help tremendously👍
video was very helpful but my mower has two cables with two holes. I can't seem to find your video with the mower like that like you mentioned. I can't seem to pull the other cable into the smaller hole to get the new cable (drive cable) into the larger hole. Advice?
You can run a long piece of wire through the spring hook and wrap it around a screwdriver for a handle. Now pull on the spring while working it through the hole.
Do you need to disconnect the spark plug first before turning mower on its side? Where do yo I get a replacement cable? Of course you need Torro model#? Thanks!
Suggestion - place hook from bottom and feed wire from bottom to top through hole. Very easy that way. Also just push the plastic anchor in the hole from the top instead of trying to slide it
What is the model number of that mower? I have a similar, but slightly older that needs a cable. Looks almost identical. The bar code sticker on mine says 21038 20017, but that doesn't correspond to a Toro Model Number. OEM model sticker long gone.
What I ran into with mine is that after replacing the belt and the cable, I still can't tighten the cable enough to make the self-propel feature work well. I have to push the handle nearly all the way down before it kicks in and moves.
Dave, If you're talking about where the top part of the cable goes. look at the black wide top handle underneath it should be grey in color not the wire handle that you grip that keeps the mower running. Its the part of the handle that pushes down to put in drive. hope this helps.
How about a four-wheel self-propelled Toro 6.5 personal space my lawn mower the four wheels turn how do I fix the four wheels to make them turn just with that one cable or do I need another spring to connect I took out six screws it was kind took me an hour to figure it out of easy
My toro self propelled mower will start but when I put in in "drIve" it shuts off. Any ideas as to what is causing this? It has fuel and oil and recently changed the air filter. I've only had it for 3 months.
the only thing i can think of is a sheared key somewhere, probably wherever the drive side of the self propel system is, under the deck on the bottom of the crankshaft, the key makes sure that it fails before anything real nice fails, making the engine out of tune and such, if you want to take it to the stealership then go ahead
I ended up ordering a cable through amazon because no one carried them in stock & Home Depot only carried universal cables, which will not work, [but they sell the mowers????] At any rate, I keep telling my wife & son not to jam the drive handle all the way forward while the mower is off. Every time they do that, I get asked to come outside & put the drive belt back on because they've managed to pull the transmission cable loose through the holder...
You can get them from Amazon but make sure you have the model number which is under the bagger flap on the left rear of the mower. I ordered the wrong cable the first time.
Anyone have information on removing the whole person pace assembly? I was thinking of taking the handle and parts off mine and putting it on another Toro mower. Both mowers have the same connections and parts it is just that one is personal pace the other is not.
Hi Toolsman. I need to see how the personal pace traction cable connects to the handle. My torsion spring under the handle dangles - its ends aren't attached. I can't tell if something is missing like a broken tab or something, or if the spring simply came unclipped. Thanks! Follow up - I found another tuber show this. Its called the speed control spring; it has one of the handle bar rods through it. That video here: ua-cam.com/video/grzMnmp-Gas/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared. Cheers. BTW, my model is 20372 SN 312xxxx (DOB 2012).
With your video I was able to fix my self propelled cable. Saved me $100

Perfect video!! Short and to the point. Well done!!
Thank you for your kind words
@@thetoolsman49 Thanks for taking the time to make the video!
Thanks for the video. Mine broke today after 10 years of service.
Thank you for making the cable replacement easy!! Changed my broken one today.
Thanks! I followed your example and saved myself $80 at least.
Have to agree though getting the hook spring reloaded was a pain. But I got it.
👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you for the video. My mower is back in service again!
Just broke my cable. Thanks to your vid . easy fast fix up , thanks
Easier to just put a new end on the existing cable.
Thank you for the video. Bro short and sweet. Straight to it!
You made it look so easy....😂. I'm having a hard time just popping it to side.. thanks though for video 👍

That's what I said too

Would have loved to see where the cable connects up top. But otherwise great video. Thanks
Thanks for the great vid. You’re detailed instructions made changing the drive cable on my buddy’s Toro way easier than expected, much appreciated!
Best video on this cable job
Great video... Subscribed
.. But how do u adjust the cable at the top? Do u wind it down towards mower?
Where the cable attaches to at the handlebar is a nylon or Teflon nut that you can loosen to slack it.
You never showed where it attaches at the very top.
Exactly only reason I needed the video wasn’t shown had a tree fall on my mower and can’t figure out how it attaches to the push handle
Thanks for the video, the spring was really hard to replace. I ended up taking the 3 bolts off the side and was able to secure it. Had the same issue. Turns out I was connecting wrong. Top end goes under the plastic handle, not the metal pull bar.
@@smg53719 ya that was my fix too. Felt like I was an idiot

great helpful hint.
Same here! Wtf!
This is just the video I needed, Tyler your suggestion to bend the hook worked perfectly. Took me 10 minutes !!!!Thanks guys.
What is that free floating washer on the shaft of the gear box? I have that washer on my Toro too.
Good video. It took me 1 hour to get that dam spring on but I did it. Thanks for your help
Glad you were able to fix it. I spring took a while for me too. LOl It sucked.
Thank you very much, just saved a divorced lady some well needed cash.
Awesome video I just snapped mine recently and I'm looking for the correct part number and a location to purchase it from if you would put a part number or a location that would help tremendously👍
This is what I came here for lol... just snapped mine yesterday.
There should me a model and serial number tag/ sticker somewhere. I picked one up at the local toro dealer.
Thanks for vid, did you ever find the cap?
video was very helpful but my mower has two cables with two holes. I can't seem to find your video with the mower like that like you mentioned. I can't seem to pull the other cable into the smaller hole to get the new cable (drive cable) into the larger hole. Advice?
Extremely helpful!!!!!!❤
Where do you order the cable from? I just broke mines
Thanks so much!! Very helpful!
how do you replace the cord to start it? mine has some allen wrench thing
I did this today. It's easier if you hook the spring on first and then thread the cable through the hole.
You can run a long piece of wire through the spring hook and wrap it around a screwdriver for a handle. Now pull on the spring while working it through the hole.
Can you help me in fixing a wobbly front ( right ) wheel on this same model?
Where you get the cable from.
What length is the cable
Best video yet, this is a piss poor design!
Do you need to disconnect the spark plug first before turning mower on its side? Where do yo I get a replacement cable? Of course you need Torro model#? Thanks!
Jusy tip it carb side up
Where did you connect the cable on the handle part?
Suggestion - place hook from bottom and feed wire from bottom to top through hole. Very easy that way. Also just push the plastic anchor in the hole from the top instead of trying to slide it
Is it a big deal to have that cap my new mower didn't come with one dont really think it would jw
I tried to get that spring on for an hour before I just loosened the 3 bolts on each side holding the transaxle and dropped it enough to install.
Good tip
I happen to have the same lawn mower would anybody have the part number for that cable
How to disconnect cable from other end at the handle?
Sorry, mine is different.
how you get the spring to go on that little hole i cant get it on for some reason
Me too what a pain in the ass?!
WTF!

Sorry. I don't know. I got a new mower

There is an adjustment on the top part. I could make a quick video this week
@@thetoolsman49 Hey, that would be awesome. Thanks so much! I would really like to have the self-propel feature working properly.
Pull the blade off, then the pulley, take the belt off gives you room to pull the cable off and put the new one back on the transmission
My cable broke at the handle at the top. you didn't show where it goes. Can you tell us that? Thanks.
I did another video. I show it in this video.
There's a hole on the drive handle over on the left side on the bottom of the handle. You wiggle the ell on the cable through that hole.
I was at a Toro dealer and looked at their mowers and seen how it was installed thanks.
Where? I can not find it!

Nice work. My neighbor has a front wheel drive Toro. On his the cable just gets loose
My toro self propelled mower will start but when I put in in "drIve" it shuts off. Any ideas as to what is causing this? It has fuel and oil and recently changed the air filter. I've only had it for 3 months.
I would bring it in. They usually come with a 3 to 5 year warranty

Very sexy! Thanks so much for the video. Ours just broke. Did you have to order or are they available at Homeme Depot?
Not sure if they would have that part at home depot. I got mine at a hardware store that services toros
Where do you get the replacement cable mine just snapped and cutting the front without it almost killed me lol
online or hardware store.
You can get them from Amazon but make sure you have the model number which is under the bagger flap on the left rear of the mower. I ordered the wrong cable the first time.
Link for part?
Sorry I bought it at my local hardware store

Thank you
You didn’t show where to attach by the handle. It’s kind of hard when the thing breaks and don’t know.
Good video, but what is with the love mood music?
You skip right past the hour and a half where you swore and kicked the mower trying to get that damn spring off.
Lol. Very true.

Love the 80's porn music
You offer no real clue about the most difficult part of the fix - reattaching the spring hook - as such I think this was a real waste of time video.
Not clear
What is the purpose of that small rectangle hole on front right side of mower body? Mine used to have a black cover, but it fell off.
