Unregulated Farm Tiling Puts State's Waters at Risk

  • Last week the Star Tribune published and article by Dennis Anderson titled " Unregulated Farm Tiling Puts State's Waters at Risk". The article was sanctimonious and incorrect. It didn't include any factual evidence or scientific research. Here's my rebuttal to the irritating published opinion.
I'd like to point out that I don't fault anyone for not understanding what we do in rural Minnesota and on America's farms. Most people in this country go to work and take care of their families every day without having to worry about safe food and a clean environment. My issue is with a journalist attempting to sway opinions about something he clearly doesn't understand, and clearly didn't research.
Here is a link to the article:

I can't stress enough that if farmers believed they were hurting our natural resources through drain tile, we wouldn't choose to use it. I would love for Dennis to contact me and come join us on a pattern tiling job this next summer. I'd like to point out that I don't fault anyone for not understanding what we do in rural Minnesota and on America's farms. Most people in this country go to work and take care of their families every day without having to worry about safe food and a clean environment. Zach, isn't that what "journalist" do today, the inernet and any social media does? I am not going to get too political here, but that is what they are doing to sway folks. I doubt they would ever write a rebuttal. Also, do you think Hunters would go a long with this? Hunters need farmers, so any of these hunting groups would probably side and help you. EXPOSE this mess. Again, go to the news, go to your local gov officials so they keep rolling this shit UP HILL....... Then keep going. Embarrass these idiots, sounds like with the permit process there is already something in place and "someone" and "others" want a job to do something that is again uneeded.

Pollution from nutrient loss occurs with surface runoff and erosion. Proper tiling reduces surface runoff and erosion. Simply put, tiling reduces waterway pollution from soil nutrient loss.

I just watched this video and then went back and watched Installing Farm Drain Tile to Prevent Erosion (Dec 8, 2017). The general idea is really quite simple for a non-farmer like myself. It seems like a pretty straight forward approach to dealing with water runoff, preventing loss of topsoil, and creating clean water downstream. Well done.

Media is so full of BS... most of it is based upon emotion and opinion, and very little sources stating where the facts come from. I try to use land efficiently and while at the same time respecting mother nature. If relying on government for the answer, might as well as just call it quits at that point.

I hate when people think they know everything when honestly. They don't know anything about the topic. They should really educate themselves before they tell the world about their beliefs. Tiling is a great thing for the environment. It costs alot of money and we don't just dump money in the ground to "pollute" or "poision people" or "drench" our crops in pesticides. All things that we do cost alot of money and we want to save as much money as possible to make our bottom line better and tiling is a thing that makes are bottom line better. How Government works; 1. Governor (father-in-law) creates new State agency with 7-person committee to control farm tiling 2. Governor appoints new commissioner (son-in-law) with 6 figure salary 3. Commissioner appoints 6 committee members with 6 figure salaries (father, uncle, brother, sister, cousin and girlfriend, just friends you understand). After one year of HARD work by committee only result is; Moose hunting season is extended.

However, you won't see many out hunting. At least in Minnesota. Those who actually hunt, go out to the Dakotas. Intensive agriculture, yes tiling, has changed the wildlife landscape for the sportsman. Dennis Anderson has championed the Minnesota sportsman for decades. And Minnesota is a state of sportsmen. I respect what you do, but Dennis has been a fair and necessary voice for our resources for years. Give him a break. He's merely trying to hold on to a piece of Minnesota that is nearly gone.

Since Ive lived on my place I have experienced an increase in flooding due to field drainage. First it was ditching then drain tile. When ditching was the big thing my pastures had an incredible stink after a flooding event. Id have to keep critters off those pastures for a few good rain showers so all the silt and whatever else washed away. Since drain tile became the big thing I still have the flooding but the aftermath is only plowed down fence. Once the fence is repaired the critters can go back on those pastures. It would be nice to get some help fixing fence line but at least MY land isnt out of service for an extended period of time anymore. I guess my biggest worry is Ill lose use of my land because now Im experiencing more frequent flood events and God help us if a little manure ends up washing out.

I think we should write an article about them...I bet Dennis has a lawn that is greener than his neighbors... they add more N and P per square foot then we do, oh and they dump the herbicides on to kill their dandelions. All they have is concrete and goes right into the sewer system water... I could rant on myself. GRRR. Best get everything tiled you can now...all they do is TAKE TAKE TAKE from rural MN. Great Video...Keep em coming!

I'm from Sweden and many on my school says that the fertilizer and sprayer are bad and you have to grow and eat ecological or how ever it is called. I'm on of the people that understand that they are wrong and I do fertilize and spray because the world need more food and I'm not going to stop whit my spraying, keep up the good work and good luck with the farming.

Very well said, I live in Iowa where there isn't a hill around so we also have a lot of tile in our fields to drain. People that write these articles sit behind a desk their whole life and never go out and actually see the farmland and how it operates. Therefore making false accusations. I fully support your opinion on this!

DeMers10 that's what should be challenged to that guy, but he'll never accept because they never want to risk being proven wrong. Get him and a agreed upon third party to pull samples from the tile on 3 or 4 fields and then from 3 or 4 municipalities and have them tested just to see which is safer.

I wish I had seen this before. My father and grandfather along with the help on the farm tiled our farm in south jersey by hand 🤚 back in the ‘50s and ‘60s ‼️ Most of them went directly to ditches (also dug by hand 🤚) on our 258 acres we owned and some were on the neighbors 200 acres that we leased. Most fed into our irrigation ponds (not dug by hand 🤚) that we irritated our potatoes 🥔 from. The same issue you are having with this story is one of the many issues my father dealt with back then and caused him to decide to quit farming ‼️. I hope you put that nincompoop in his place ‼️ signed, Spud the Spudman ‼️

Preach it brother Zach. I couldn't agree with you more. I'm not a farmer as you know. But I've grown up in an AG area. And I understand farmers. I don't know of a single farmer that can afford to apply fertilizer, and chemicals will nilly. I worked at a fertilizer manufacturer. we also did custom application. I inloaded two pallets of chemicals. Which I'm sure you know is approximately thirty boxes or so with two 2.5 gallon jugs per box. When I was done my boss looked at me and said you just move 250,000 dollars. Now someone that is better at math can figure out the cost per oz and per acres, as I'm not up to application rates. I believe the last time I had anything to do with fertilizer, nitrogen was something like close to 1000 dollars a ton or something like that. I guess my point is who could afford to waste these products at these prices. So according to this reporters article. It's better to let all the rainfall just run off the ground and wash and eroide the soil. Send him a history book. When around the time of the civil war alot of farmers were moving west, why cause they abused the land and it stopped producing. Sorry your dealing with this. Bit we seem to live in an age where out landish ideas and opinions are the norm. Finally something we agree on Zach, this dude is a wack doodle. Sorry for the rant. Btw how did you control yourself I would of had steam coming out of my ears

We need more young farmers like you! The problem with stuff like this is that the average age of farmers is.......... old. Old farmers aren’t on social media and don’t really voice what they do. This leaves the door wide open for journalist to write whatever they want and send it to a mass of people. That mass of people don’t go to the source for facts, they go to the internet. On the internet they find whatever the hell they want and cherry pick their info giving them the false sense of being an expert. Then those people get elected and tell us (the farmer) what to do. Because they know more than we do cuz they are wiki graduate students. Thank you for your videos!
