  • ►WHAT IS THIS
Hi, I would like to show you how to make Hydrogen gas using 12M HCl and Zn as a single replacement reaction.
    ►SAFETY
Don't touch, taste, smell, or even look at Hydrochloric Acid without protection. Here's what you need:
    Nitrile Gloves
    Safety Goggles (with splash shield)
    Chemical resistant beakers/flasks
A brain that is not stupid - this is a potent acid
    ►TIMESTAMPS
    0:56 - Reactants and Products
1:29 - Where to get Zinc
    2:18 - Safety (Don't skip this)
3:30 - The Reaction Taking Place
    5:59 - Exploding Balloons?
    ►MATERIALS
    HCL 27% - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
Zinc - from pennies or anything galvanized

Back in the day (when people used to say things like "Back in the day"), I worked in a precious metals mint as a tool-maker. One boring Sunday, with only a skeleton crew in the plant, a co-worker and I were there purely for production support, aka: nothing to do while booking double time. We grabbed a bottle of hydrogen from the jewelry dept. (platinum welding torches) proceeded to fill finger-cots and pop them just the way you did. Cool, but nowhere near mischievous enough for us. A nitrile glove the size of oooh, 3 basketballs... now we're talking !
Holio-shit,.. both of us, temporarily deaf, knew that security was on their way. We grabbed some inspection equipment and made all busy like. Just as the rafter dust was hitting the ground and the ear ringing was easing up, they came into the tool-shop. "Oh yeah, we heard it too. Sounded like it came from the fine wire dept." Off they went, Lmao.
This marked the beginning of a very "creative" friendship and we topped that prank several times over. But, those are stories for another time aaand some records, of course, are sealed for life. [smirk]

    Very nice!
Reminds me of an army prank:
we used to mix hcl acid with aluminium foil in a plastic water bottle. The bottle swells and eventually explodes sounding like a gunshot!!

I'm 66 and way way back when I was in 9th grade our science teacher showed us how to make hydrogen gas by pouring hydrochloric acid over chips of zinc. He then demonstrated how the gas expolded. My father had a jug of acid and me and my friend were soon making hydrogen bombs using glass peanut butter jars. We got some big explosions.

The mechanism that you stated for the production of hydrogen gas is incorrect. This is an oxidation-reduction reaction in which a zinc atom transfers two electrons to two hydrogen ions causing them to bond covalently and leave solution as diatomic hydrogen.

I’m pretty sure the byproduct at the end can be neutralized and disposed of (Some how).
You can also keep it or take it to a waste company.

My school has chemical disposal. You can check the OSHS webpage for disposal requirements. Otherwise, just secretly dump it in the neighbor's coy pond - they'll never know.
JK. Don't do that last thing. Hold onto it if you must. Glass jars work.

Hydrolysis seems easier and less chemically. Work smarter. Not harder....

There's a disagreement over what an "acid" is?... Thats news to me. Ive never heard of any other definition other than the definition you stated

It's complicated. Point and case: Water; it's sometimes an acid and sometimes a base and sometimes neither.
What I said only applies in about 99% of cases.

Two protons (H+) do not make a hydrogen molecule!! where are the electrons. The electrons comes from the oxidation reaction.

You do know it’s illegal to do what you just did to US currency (title 18 chapter 17)? Surprised you didn’t get a call about it yet lol

    • @BlueprintScience
      @BlueprintScience  2 роки тому

A common misconception. While destroying US currency is illegal, the US penny is legally exempt. In other words, you may destroy as many pennies as you like.

This isn't "squeaky voice" hydrogen that can be inhaled. It has too much HCl vapor in it to be safe.
