I've been on the comedy circuit a couple of years, I'm still little more than an 'open-mic comic' but I've gigged with a few pro-comedians and Andrew Lawrence is the only pro who really gave me the time of day and treated me as an equal. Was a real pleasure to chat a bit about the industry with somebody I grew up watching on Live at the Apollo. Top bloke and a fantastic comedian.
I remember Frank Skinner said that when he was starting out in comedy, he asked an experienced pro for some advice and the comic told him to ‘never leave your wallet in the dressing room’. And Frank’s lived by that for 30 years.

Wow! I know you guys often make jokes about the how much comedy is affected by this growing woke culture but listening to Andrew really hits home how long this has been going on and to what extent. This has clearly really affected him and I think he was incredibly brave to call it out when he did and it's admirable that he hasn't allowed the nasty, bullying woke left to quieten him. Another great interview, thanks.

As such, at the very best it was a calculated and childish fuck you to anyone with an inclusive world view that didn't include him.

It is really scary. I posted something questioning a certain famous person who writes for the Guardian and I returned to my twitter feed and was swamped a tsunami of abuse since he retweeted what I wrote taken out of context. When it happens to you it's really awful. Sympathise for this guy.

I've watched some of Andrew's stand up and he's genuinely hilarious, not something you can say about most 'mainstream' comedians.
As an older man who grew up in the 1970's and watching TV where comedians had a voice. You are a complete breath of fresh air. Please keep writing your great material. I am looking forward to coming to a live event as soon as you announce your dates. The woke left and left leaning comedians are far from what I want to listen to. He’s right though, I’ve finished with the MS so called comedy because it’s just about insulting one group of people. His Johnny Smugface and Prince Harry videos had me laughing straight away.
From the U.S. and unfamiliar with Mr. Lawrence’s talent, so I took a break from this interview, to see if I could catch one of his bits. Sure did! Brilliant isn’t the word. Incredible. Unbelievable. Amazing. After watching one of his clips I keep thinking man could deliver one hell of a eulogy. Adore this man.
Society needs comics like Andrew - especially now! So much respect for this guy and deserves much more success.

Andrew sounds beaten, I hope he isn't! They can't keep a truly talented person down, just got to keep fighting them, and keep doing what makes him special! If he fights, he will win, because most people agree with him, support him, and want to see him.
I've followed his whole career and these events clearly made him quite ill, but he has a decent tour schedule and still writes for radio. I think he's reasonably financially secure now, which would have been a major concern at the time. His material is still very good. Watch him where you can, you can download sets from his website.

This is what middle class lefties don't take into account - the economic effects of immigration on the lowest paid. @@oliviamaynard9372 The definition of racism and sexism keeps expanding though, and it's done purposely so that one side of the debate can freely label everybody they disagree with as racist and sexist and use those labels to silence that person. We're at a point now where stating a fact is considered racist or sexist (unless you're not white, in which case you can be as racist as you want and you will be defended by the left and given full time employment at the BBC or Channel 4).

@@ostrichman Hes saying that Andrews story is exactly what the BBC and many other left wing news outlets missed when reporting on the Brexit polls. Everyone thought Brexit was going to be a landslide for the remain campaign. I saw polls at 80/20 remain, however. like Andrew stated, there were many facts that the left ignored that ordinary people wanted for the country and thus it took them by surprise.

The BBC is the voice of the british govt and state and by no means is that left wing, its political commentators are usually right wing, one only needs to look at the build up tpo to the last general election to see what side of the fence the BBC sits on ffs, its run by the same oxbridge people who make up the upper echelons of the tory and labour parties ffs.
As for brexit you do realise it was the vote was called by Cameron (that renowned socialist) to try and make the anti-EU element in his party stop their incessant squabbling and to bring the balance in favour of the pro-EU tories such as himself and Teresa May (trotskyite?) and many others who actively campaigned for the remain vote nor does it make any sense when there has been a very large element of the labour party who were opposed to britain joining the EU in the first place and have always campaigned to get out of EU. One only needs to look at how the Labour Party leader at the time tried to handle that vote to see that brexit was not a left v right thing, it is not as black and white as the rabid right seem to be now trying to paint it.
i think youll find it was the Remain Conservatives who got the mood of the nation completely wrong and then resigned when it went the way of brexit.

I was a support worker for two years and I have some idea about the autism spectrum (not to mention having tested significantly highly for it myself), but I'm sorry if you thought it was a judgement. I guess I've just been trained to pick up on things like that, I found his demeanour notable. I'm surprised you thought it was a derogatory thing to say. Far from being a label, AS characteristics are often part of a wider language with which to navigate the complexities of individual personality, and some of them are actually quite common. I agree that the word "spectrum" gets thrown around a lot these days (probably too much), but this by itself has neither a positive nor negative implication about it's validity.

I was just wondering if it was due to the effect that the events he was describing have had on him, because if it was it would be a further indictment of the current media tribalism, or if the mildly avoidant mannerisms he was exhibiting (such as little to no eye contact, frequent touching of the face and head, and frequent movement of the head) were just a general trait.
It doesn't really matter. But like I said, I've kind of been primed to notice these things.

I can’t believe that Mock the Week is still going! I stopped watching just before my daughter was born and presumed it was on verge of getting cancelled as it was so pathetic. Daughter about to start secondary school. I wish Andrew and Alistair Williams all the best.

People forget that comedians are artists and many (most) are sensitive souls irrespective of their in-act demeanour. To be undermined by their own industry is soul-destroying for them.
I remember seeing him on 'Live at the Apollo' and thinking he was good. I liked him even more when he dared to speak out about the wokeists.

All of the many comedy panel shows on C4 and BBC and ITV are basically the same. They have the same comedians telling the same jokes at the same subjects. Their wages are paid by a few powerful people in the industry who all think alike and expect 'their comedians' to say exactly what they want, not what the individual comedians want to themselves. The concept of 'self' has lost it's real meaning these days, they are merely employees, they might as well work in Tescos for all the autonomy they have, which is zero. It reminds me of Python's 'Life of Brian' in the scene where Brian is pleading with the people to leave him alone, 'You are all individuals' he says, 'Yes, we are all individuals' the crowd replies in unison.
That's one of the reasons I love QI. It is practically alone in its ability to leave politics alone. I'm sure they'd love to shovel some into it, but given the modus operandi of the show, it wouldn't work.

@@killcat1971 I'm only referring to the joke material itself. I'm not so anathema to political correctness that even the box-ticking offends me. As long as every second joke isn't about Boris, Brexit, Dominic Cummings, or worse Trump, I'm happy for the other things to happen. Also, I haven't kept a tally chart for how many jokes there are about men, but given the show is heavily based on history, and as history was performed and written almost exclusively by men, it's going to come up quite a lot lol.
For the record, I still do watch all the other shows I'm critical of. Have I Got News For You, 8 Out Of Ten Cats, The Last Leg etc still contain enough other jokes for me to enjoy them. I draw the line at The Mash Report, however. Nish Kumar is an absolute cretin.
