From dull to BIG Punchy Drums Sound (Mixing with SSL Analog Console)

- My approach for mixing drums and getting a punchy sound using an SSL Mixing Console and Pro Tools. The sound is achieved mostly using the SSL channel EQ and Compressor and some digital plugins (UAD EMT-140 Plate Reverb, Slate Trigger 2, Waves C1 Gate). Any questions or video suggestions leave me a comment!

Solid. Thanks for sharing! 🙏
Awesome drums George!
Nice one!
I love the way you do and when you turn on the plate reverb on the snare!!! Cool. I will try on my WING futur mix. Thanks! Fred from France!

Can you do a studio tour of your gear and how they are routed?
Will try to make this happen. Haven't had a lot of free time lately. Thanks for the suggestion!
Hi George. I have an SSL AWS 916. I don't know very well how to route the physical knobs Fx1 to Fx4 to the returns to use plugins. If I have used hardware reverbs and through my patch of connections I can use it, but with plugin I was not able. You can help? How do you do it? Do you also patch to get to use the plugs from the knobs on the analog console? Thanks you so much...!
Hey, I route my FX sends to inputs in my Avid HD I/O converters. I then make AUX channels in Pro Tools that have the reverb plugin 100% wet and use the inputs I selected for FX from my converters. Then I route the output of the reverb AUX channels to "ST Return 4" in my console so they are added back to the analog mix. There will be latency as there is one roundtrip of AD/DA conversion, but it works great for me since that becomes like a pre-delay on my reverb signal.
Another question, you put differents compressors per tracks or just a few, like 2 or 3?
I rarely use more than 2 compressors per channel. It’s usually one or sometimes 2. But there are no rules 😁!
@@GeorgeGoire Thanks. I found by myself that add reverbs on snare and toms gave me more sustain and big sound. I'm not a pro, but I like sound and make big sound on my drums. It's a huge challenge for me...
@@fredbob7521 that's cool! And you can apply a compressor to it to beef it up a bit!!! It will sound incredible!
What type of mixing console are you using cuz I'm interested in possibly a quantity of mixing console
I have a SSL AWS 900+SE console. The new ones are SSL AWS924/948.
@@GeorgeGoire joy that thank you for getting back with me in reference to your console my question again to you do you use a lot of plugins or do you use outboard gear cuz I have a lot of plugins and I'm just wondering how well it will work out should I able to acquire this console can you help me out with that information thank you
