Thank you, Eric! Great video... very well done. I enjoyed watching, learned a lot, and lusted after that cable! (not kidding) My cable box is under construction and I'm still waiting on crystal and caps to arrive. This is an exciting project... maybe the best open community project to come along in 10 years. Thanks again for all you do. Marcus
Thanks Eric! I was watching the HHC video where you almost got started putting on the decals when the video cut off. It was great to see this demo. Even though I've done one myself, I learned several things about how to do it right!
thanks Eric! great video. you make the smd soldering look so easy! I am looking forward to installing wp34s on my own 30b in a few days. do you know if/when overlays will be available again on your site?
Thank You, Eric! Really nice demo and excellent work! Just to let others know, the WP-34S is probably the most powerful RPN calculator ever build, and it is available ready made from commerce.hpcalc.org/34s.php for those who don't want to diy.
"If you don't have a cable there are other ways to do this." The secret gnosticism of the HP-adjacent projects. Time to light a candle and head into the subterranean archives.
The clock crystal and capacitors are optional. If you don't need the timer functions, you can skip installing the crystal and capacitors, then flash with the file calc_full.bin instead of calc_xtal_full.bin.
There are plenty of generic cables available for `USB-TTL but they will not have those buttons. Do you know what pins those buttons go to on the calculator?
Only just found out about all this and this is hypothetical, as there don’t appear to be any overlays available. If you have completed the conversion, under operation, the home made cable (as you are correct, the hp items are essentially rocking horse shit) you will need to cobble together is the only way of backing up your programs....?
Here's a blog entry showing how someone flashed the firmware without the special cable: www.thereminworld.com/Forums/T/29229/diy-calculator-hp30b-to-wp34s
I think he switched the calculator when applying the overlay, like the cooking shows do. Hahaha just kidding. Seems a little stupid from HP to not sell the 34S slightly cheaper than this one if is only firmware plus cristal (and btw that back cover seems very wasteful on plastic).

Thanks for the great video. Can the HP 20B be hacked same way, so I can end up with a 34S? Thanks.
Just a question, my hp30 do switch off occasionally when entering and calculating numbers. Any suggestions of how to fix it, please
Maybe try reflashing it. Is the inside of it clean?
Hi, do you know when the overlays will be back on sale. Thks

I'm looking for information on the programming cable and/or the 6-pin interface on the calculator. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Does anyone know if HP plans to make any new pocket sized calculators? Maybe a new update to the 35s?
@Falcrist: agreed - if we can't build one of these cables, this project can't be replicated by mere mortals.
Does anybody still do the conversions?
I used Arduino and few wires to rewrite its firmware
might i ask where can i get the files to flash this calculator?
sourceforge.net/p/wp34s/code/HEAD/tree/trunk/realbuild/
I love that Eric doesn't give two fucks and just dose his own thing..... go Eric
Why the clock crystal and the capacitors are soldered? Is this operation necessary for building a WP 34S from an HP 20B?
I guess no, but you could not use timer otherwise

the erase should go to the top two pins from left to right

Great!!! I'm waiting for the componentes!!

Sweeeettt! Give it a good whack. 🤔
