Oil furnace pump bypass plug
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 сер 2024
- This is an explanation of how the bypass plug is used to change an oil pump from one pipe to two pipe operation.
This video is part of the heating and cooling series of training videos made to accompany my websites: www.graycoolingman.com and www.grayfurnaceman.com to pass on what I have learned in many years of service and repair. If you have suggestions or comments they are welcome.
If you are a homeowner looking to repair your own appliance, understand that the voltages can be lethal, the fuels are highly flammable and high pressures are used. Know your limits.
Think that pumps only around 150-200 psi max. Would blow out over that. Oh and I like the video too. A lot of people miss that bypass plug. Thanks for making this.
two pipe uses the principle of an " ejector" (venturi)as deep water wells use to use pump to force water up from low levels . Nice video thanks
Nice clear simple explanation.
Well after 2 weeks of watching videos to see why my furnace was leaking oil, like a lot,,,it was the little screw,,,🤷♀️ I took it out
You are gold GreyFurnaceMan. I want to remove my old steel 275 single line and replace with a new double wall Granby or equivalent. I am trying to learn what is needed. Thanks. Have a 1 year old Peerless with Riello burner.
Thank you
Thank you.....
You also need that if you going to put in the tiger Loop tigerloop is like a two pipe system
I tell my techs that oil pumps follow an ODD rule... 1 line = odd (or 1 thing), 2 line = even (or 2 things), 2 line + plug = odd (3 things). Always be ODD.
Gracias Thank You
Fantastic informative video thank you..

Question on 2 pipe on 3400 rpm Beckett AFG in New furnace. Is squeal in return line due to cavitation? It varies but get loud sometimes. Barely hear it in the supply line. I just changed the filter and it wasn't real dirty but it did quiet it. I have about 20 ft of line each way to an outside tank. I am lifting about 5 feet then thru wall,, across ceiling in basement about 10 ft and down 5 feet to the furnace filter and into it. Beckett 10323 pump with bypass plug installed.

BTW, I love your videos.
Great explanation, I think I saw an old Beckett burner in 1 my ole parts buildings the other day not sure if it's complete, I might maybe check that out today and make a video on that crazy thing! Hope you dont mind me stealing a idea or two from you LOL
i have a oil beckett burner and starting to make noise would it be the mortor or pump .
Thank you for making this video I am putting together a newer burner to retro fit on my old National and the newer burner I have was set up for a two pipe so if it was not for your video I would have not taken out the insert and messed up my pump.
I do however have a question the suntec oil pump on my new unit has a box on top of the oil pump with wires going to it what does thsi do? And there is a sticker that says pump pressure set at 150psi can that be adjusted?
Thanks!
Walter Null The box is a solenoid valve that lets the pump get up to speed before it opens and lets oil in. Means a cleaner burn. The pumps have an adjustment screw. Not sure where it is on your pump but you might check thru some of my videos on pumps to see if yours is there. Hope this helps.

can you explain to me that it may be that I have damaged my pump
valuable information...
Thanks very helpful !!
Old and reliable. My american standard a-3 boiler usually runs without issue. However recently pump shaft seal started to leak. I had a J2CB-100-3 pump and suntech told me to use a J4PB-1000-G pump to replace it. Everything works as before, except now when the burner shuts off you hear a last 2 or 3 pulses of flame. Is this normal/ok. The old pump flame would just stop.
I would not be concerned. If you want to stop it, you could install a shut off on the gun line.

Question, let's say I want to change a 1 line system to a 2 line system I. E. Tiger Loop. Is the bypass plug currently removed on the 1 pipe system? Do I need to add/purchase a bypass plug now for the tiger loop?
You must install the bypass plug.

Thank you sir

I do have question on two pipe system!! Can we use the bleeding valve or the bleeding valve it’s not gonna work when install the plug on the return and converter to two pipe system? Thanks
What size is the bypass hex screw
Beats me. I just use the one that comes with the pump.
GFM
Ive got an older beckett burner in a miller furnace in my shop. I recently mounted the heater about 7 ft up on the wall. Had it running yesterday. Took a while to bleed. Undersandable its prob 8 ft of line to the pump. Pump looks different then the one in your video. Do I need to put a plug in somewhere? Remove a plug?
You must install a bypass plug. The pump should have marking that tells which tap it should be placed in. It is an allen set screw fitting.
When you install the plug, a return line must be installed at that fitting.
GFM
Ok. I'm gonna try a check valve first. If that doesn't work ill try 2 lines
Could ya add the words "two pipe to one" (or vice verca) to the tittle.... Once almost learned about the oil pump shaft (from the distributor) in a 327 the hard way too...
Go for it.

ya verifique si mi bomba y si trabaja bien pero Él diésel no sube
What size hex head plug is used inside the return line of the pump?
Edgar Babineau I think is 5/16"

I have a question I am in the process of changing out my pump. now when I snug up the two bolts to attach the pump to the housing the squirrel cage gets tight if I back off the two bolts you can spend it freely but it does have some tension on it what could be causing this thank you for the help
+Topgunviking Hard To Kill The coupler may be either too long, or if the coupler tightens to the shaft with a set screw, the screws may need to be loosened and then tightened when the pump is tightened down. Hope this helps.
GFM
Definitely an issue with length of pump coupling.
Hi Gray, I noticed today it appears I have a slow drip coming from my bypass plug (Bolt 4.39 in your video). Normally would that require replacing the bolt or just tightening it? I figured I'd ask before possibly over tightening it. Thank you for your input and video.
physiquesSorry about the wait. I would remove, clean dope the threads (no teflon tape) and tighten. You can be fairly generous with tightening torque. Hope this helps.

grayfurnaceman Thank you it does, I wasn't sure if putting a little muscle behind it could damage it. Thank you again ;)
my pump is set up for lines but I want to make it to one line I removed the insert plug my question is do I have to reset the pressure on the pump or no and if I do can u tell me how?? thank you, you are a great help: )
+Jaime Baeza It should make no difference in the pump pressure.
GFM
OK thank you so very much!!!!!
Instead of having a tank oil return line, why not install a Tigerloop?
Because it is simple and effective.
GFM
Tigerloops are also about $100, and the company says to replace them ever 10 years as preventive maintenance.
A tigerloop will fail before a simple return line will.
Why complicate something that doesn't need it.
Let’s say someone is clueless what happens when you forget the bypass plug and pipe it with tiger loop and no bypass plug on suntec fuel pump
I ment 2 lines!!!
That's a very old style pump.
Yes, and its been working for all those years.
