  • In this video, I'm going to show you guys how to unlock 2X PCIe bandwidth performance on your H710P mini RAID controller. There are 3 variants of the H710P mini RAID controller and of those 3, one of them is capable of PCIe 3.0 x8 and has the LSI SAS2208 Rev D1 chipset. That one is Dell P/N 0TY8F9. The other 2 variants are Dell P/N 0TTVVV and 0N3V6G and these only support PCIe 2.0 x8 and use the older LSI SAS2208 Rev B0 chipset. So, if you want to enable PCIe 3.0, be sure you have the TY8F9 part.
    In this video, at 12:09, I show exactly how to enable PCIe 3.0 for the H710P mini. After that, I boot into the OS to confirm that the controller is indeed running at PCIe 3.0 speeds.
    Here's a summary of the Dell PERC H710P part numbers:
    - Dell P/N 0TTVVV - H710P mini monolithic Rev B0 (PCIe 2.0)
    - Dell P/N 0N3V6G - H710P mini monolithic Rev B0 (PCIe 2.0)
    - Dell P/N 0TY8F9 - H710P mini monolithic Rev D1 (PCIe 3.0) (find it on eBay: ebay.to/3O1fQZd)
    Need a mini monolithic controller with IT mode firmware?:

    Thank you for sharing. Setting the link speed to PCIe 3.0 x8 even works for the H710 mini on a R720 which came with PCIe 2.0 as default.

    Wow. Another informative video from Art of Server! Thank you. This worked for me as well. However the DP/N for my H710 Mini is: 05CT6D (Long version: CN-05CT6D-75435-2CP-09AG-A00)

      Glad this helped! Yes, 5CT6D is the other part that is PCIe 3.0 capable. However, if you're going to use hardware RAID, get the H710P with the P/N I mentioned in this video. That one has more cache, supports FastPath feature for higher IOPS when using SSDs, etc. It's overall a better RAID controller for this generation of server.

    • @ArtofServer

      Thanks! Unfortunately, no... this generation of mini monolithic cards only lasted 1 generation so they will only fit 12th gen servers like the R720, R720XD, R620, R520, R420 and R320. (not R820)

    Specs for the full H710 is PCIe Gen2.0 ... to get 16 disks going, adding a PERCH330 would do the trick, but I believe there are cheaper options... which one would recommend to match the H710P Gen3.0 card? LSI9311, 9341, 9300 ??
    The goal is to have 16 DAS disks for ZFS in a R720 ( 2x 8 SFF backplane ).
    And keep up the good work 😀

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  10 місяців тому +1

      H330 mini is not available for 12th gen Dell servers. This H710P/H710 Mini is specifically for 12th gen only. And you can get PCIe 3.0 if you have the P/N mentioned in this video and follow this procedure. Honestly, the SAS3008 generation of HBAs are only useful if you plan to use SAS-3 SSDs, and even then there's not enough PCIe bandwidth until the gen4 cards like 9500 series.

      @@ArtofServer I meant using the H710P mini P/N 5CT6D + H330 Full PCIe card (P/N 4Y5H1).
      The H710P mini P/N 5CT6D is gen3.0 capable. The H710 PCie card is described as gen2.0 .
      I meant to ask which Full PCIe card would be enough to match the H710P mini P/N 5CT6D to get a 16-disk setup.
      H330 (P/N 4Y5H1) is somewhat expensive for a HomeLab in Brazil.😬

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  11 місяців тому

      I don't think so. I think the PCIe card versions just behave like normal PCIe cards and negotiate link speed to the highest level mutually possible. I honestly don't know why Dell disabled the PCIe 3.0 ability by default for these specific H710/H710P cards. I wonder if they were planning to sell a "license key" to enable the extra PCIe performance but didn't happen?

      I found a post that someone put a H730P into a T620 and that card has 2G of ram and runs at PCIe gen3 speeds, so I might do that. The only problem is that idrac doesn't report the backplane properly, but they said everything else worked. @@ArtofServer

    0TY8F9 with IT firmware ( without BIOS ) works at 8GT/s ( PCIe3.0 ) without the need to enter device configuration ( there isn't one, since there's no BIOS ). Backplane signaling is working fine... any reason I should put the BIOS back ? And I chose LSI9217-8i ( DELL 0GTP9G ) for the second backplane since it is PICe3.0 and accepts IT firmware 😁

      @@ArtofServer yeah I'm still exclusively R720 for my servers. The Ryzen 5 5600G is doing great for video editing so probably won't bother to upgrade anymore. The current setup can saturate 4Gbe. I've actually had some moments where I have needed that speed. Most the time they are overkill nas boxes though.

    Very informative video thanks, however HW Raid in 2023 is considered a bad practice in most strorage solutions.

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  6 місяців тому +1

      Although I'm a ZFS user for many years, and that is what I prefer, I don't think HW RAID is bad practice. I think people should use whatever works best for their situation. I know of many very large organizations that still use HW RAID and it meets their needs just fine. I also know many organizations and individuals that use ZFS and it meets their needs just fine. There's a different solution to different needs, and that's a very good thing to have variety.

      @@bentheguru4986 it's the server's memory that makes ZFS work (L1ARC). Recommended minimum is 16 GB but I think this will only work for small storage-only setups. If you want to run VMs and/or kubernetes you need more RAM for better performance. And if you have 60+ drives, then you need even more memory (~1GB per 1TB) and if you are using SSDs then it should be minimum PCIE 3.0 with matching RAID/HBA controller (12Gbps) to make it work.
