Tarring and feathering was absolutely brutal. To get it off, sometimes the skin would go along with it. In many cases those who were tarred and feathered ended up dying. The worst (fatal) versions were being stripped completely naked, then tarred, then feathered, then being tied to the top of a fence which was lifted out of the ground and then being paraded around a city. Just for doing your job.
I teach American history at the high school level, and the most common teaching is the stirrings of the Revolution started in and around Boston, with the Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, and Lexington & Concord happening all before the Declaration of Independence. But I’ve heard from colleagues in North Carolina that in their schools, they teach that the Revolution really started in NC with the Regulator Movement.
My opinion, both things can be true at the same time.
One of the many, many reasons I love Outlander is that it tells stories that are often skipped over in history classes, not for lack of interest but for lack of time…. From the Jacobite Rebellion, to the laws stacking the deck against anyone wanting to free a slave in the southern colonies (as we see when Jocasta tries to give her estate to Jamie in the beginning of season 4), to Native American traditions of adopting people (Ian and the Mohawks), and now, the Regulators in Colonial North Carolina.

Thank you for explaining that, for some reason I had a feeling I knew what happened to those who were tarred and feathered but hoped it wasn't true..lol
And that is awesome you teach History! It would be cool if you could use Outlander as a teaching tool in class.
      Thank you for the lesson

Were you aware that Governor Tryon is an actual historic figure ? He at some later point is transferred to New York to become its Governor. Fun aside: Sam Heughan & the actor who plays Tryon were in a series of Beer commercials in the UK several years ago.

"How would they get it off", well that was the point largely. Practically impossible and not without immense pain. The American revolution is to most Americans a sacred subject, and so aspects of the uprising, like the cruelty and sheer barbarism of patriots against loyalists who did nothing but declare that they favoured the Crown, is never discussed. There were of course heinous acts comitted on both sides, but the patriots are always portrayed as the morally unquestionable heroes, never highlighting the suffering they subjected people to whom simply disagreed, forcing them out of their homes lives, ostracising and persecuting them and their entire families. Revolutions are very easy to romanticize, but each and every one of them would've been truly horrid processes to experience first hand.

TV show Roger, unfortunately, is portrayed as bumbling and almost helpless. Book Roger is much more pro-active and confident that whatever 18th century skills he doesn't have yet, he can learn. I guess it just makes for more tension in the show (between him and Jamie especially. It really does leave one HOPING for them to bond and start to earn each other's respect somehow).
