@LFR FAMILY Lol the Mitch slap is what us PTX fans call the expression on everyone’s face the first time they hear Mitch’s voice. You didn’t disappoint! 😆
Shortly before he passed, Leonard Cohen the gentleman who wrote the song, heard Pentatonix cover of his song. He said It was the best cover of his song he had ever heard
If I'm not wrong Leonard Cohen died 20 days before the cover was released, so I'd only believe this if someone from the group say they show him the song and that hasn't happened.
Avi was bass in this song. Whenever the bass singer has a solo, Scott, the tall blond who sang first, takes over as bass. Avi left in 2017 and Matt became bass late 2017. That was the only member change in their 10-year history. Thank you for reacting to Pentatonix. I look forward to more Pentatonix reactions.

Pentatonix is the best a cappella band on the planet. 19.4 subscribers, almost 6 billion views, 3 Grammys, 10 million records sold, numerous world tours, etc. I highly recommend their cover of "Amazing Grace", "The Sound of Silence", "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" or "The Prayer". They have hundreds of songs including originals to chose from and honestly EVERYTHING that they do is mind-blowing.

You asked about what it was like for the try outs of the group. Scott, Mitch and Kirsten all went to high school together. After Scott and Kirsten had graduated and was finishing their freshman years in different states, Scott approached them about trying out for the NBC show "The Sing Off". They added Avi the bass singer in their earlier works on recommendations from people Scott knew, and they asked Kevin to join the group based on a UA-cam video he posted "cello-boxing". So the group never had any tryouts until Avi left the group a few years ago. They did hold try outs for the replacement who turned out to be Matt Salee.
It was interesting when Matt went to tryout for PTX. He was already a massive PTX fan, he even attended concerts and other events with them. When he answered the audition, he didn't know it was for Pentatonix.
At the point when you asked about the bassline, it was actually their baritone (blond) covering bass because the bass (beard) was singing lead. That's how gifted they are. Every member has at least a 4 octave range, including the current bass (possibly excepting the beatboxer... I think he does, but I haven't seen a compilation addressing that yet). Welcome to Pentatonix!
Welcome to Pentatonix! We fans are called 'Pentaholics' because we can't get enough. Get ready for the viewer and subscriber bump on the channel! Since it's the season of the holidays, you can't go wrong with reacting to their holiday songs. Pentatonix was started with Scott (blonde, baritone with insane range down and up), Mitch (round had/high tenor/insane vocal range up), and Kirstin (latina soprano) in Arlington Texas. They added original bass Avi (knit hat, insanely low bass) and Kevin (black man, beat boxing/percussion, tenor, also plays cello on a couple but they show the instruments they use) before they competed on a TV show for A Capella groups in the early 00's called "The Sing Off". They won the Sing Off, got a record deal, they all moved out to LA as neighbors in the same apartment complex for the contract, and then a week later the producer dropped the contract because they didn't believe there would be enough of an audience for A Capella. Pentatonix decided to stick it out. They began to shoot videos and used UA-cam as their main vehicle of popularity and publication of their songs and videos. One strategy they use consistently is releasing crazy-popular Christmas Albums every year (Hallelujah was part of one of their holiday albums). And they steadily rose in popularity, signing back on with the parent recording company of the original production label that dropped them. Look at the number of views on their videos.... over half a billion on Hallelujah alone. They won three Grammy awards, each for covers, so... there's that. One of their early videos, Daft Punk Medley, they produced for $400 in their closets at home, and it won them their first grammy. For holiday Grammy awards, they did an adaptation of the music from the Nutcracker ballet, "The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy", which is entirely instrumental. That won them their second grammy. In later years, Avi had some family concerns and realized he couldn't keep up with their world tours (yes, world tours) and concert and recording schedule, and he had to part company with the group. It was a friendly split, and Avi helped the group audition his replacement, which is another black gentleman named Matt (also insanely low bass, just not _quite_ as low as Avi, but still an excellent musician). Avi and Matt are the only two members who swapped places. However, Mitch and Kirstin have a habit of radically changing their look and their style for each and every music video and appearance, to such an extent that folks new to the group can get confused and be like, "Wait, wasn't there a blonde in the desert? Who's this morticia goth lady?" So for holiday faves, you can't go wrong with "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy", and they just dropped this year's runaway hit, "The Prayer". Folks like their rendition of "Mary Did You Know?" too, but I'm personally more partial to their rendition of "O Come All Ye Faithful" where they took historic African arrangements and polyrhythms and actually use a choir to back them up. One final note - Pentatonix takes great pride in releasing videos with 'real' sounds. While their videos do get some mixing in the sense of voice balancing, compression, and reverb for production quality, they don't rely on auto-tune or digital sound effects. There are no instrument tracks unless they show you themselves playing the instrument. There are no drum tracks - it's all Kevin who is arguably one of the best beat-boxers alive today. There is only one video where they used any kind of vocal effects whatsoever, and that was in their "90's Dance Medley" when they sang "Believe" by Cher, who was the first artist to use vocoder effects to give her voice an obvious electronic warble in the chorus, so Pentatonix in homage to her used the same effect in the same place, but clearly called out that's what they're doing. Live versions of many of their songs exist, which proves that they can and do produce the entire range of sounds, in real time, that you can hear on any video. If you watch "Daft Punk Medley" next you'll see why that's even a question for many viewers. They have been singing and practicing and living their lives in close proximity for so long that they function both as soloists and as a single vocal organism, and they have a sympathy which allows them to pivot on a dime. You can see that in motion in one video which has a radio show giving them the game "Pentatonix Tries to Sing 100 Songs in 10 minutes" (they don't make it, but they stopped at like 96). Welcome to the fan club. We're glad to have you. Next Pentatonix video, please, sir. ;)
Congrats, you have just been added to the ever growing people who have been Mitch slapped, the moment when you hear Mitch (the smaller guy with the big hat) sing

Damn I been watching you so long and I just realized you haven’t been put onto Pentatonix yet 😱😱 idk how!! oh you’re in for a ride!! 👌🏼🔥❤️ so in order of appearance you got Scott, Avi (bass, but when he sings Scott takes over for him temporarily), Kevin (beatboxer, who also sings when there’s no beat happening), Kirstin, & Mitch!! You should check out the renditions of Sound of Silence, Bohemian Rhapsody (insane!!), Mad World, Amazing Grace, The Prayer, their 90’s Dance Medley and their Daft Punk Medley 👌🏼😊 oh and Kirstin, Mitch & Scott actually grew up with each other so they’ve known each other since they were kids & have been singing with each other for a long time!
Here's my favorite Pentatonix request: Please go to their UA-cam channel and pick whatever song YOU want to hear! They're all excellent and you deserve a chance to treat yourself after putting in all of this work on your channel. Cheers, Man!
Everyone says that about Home Free until they listen to PTX lol. If no one else said it "You got Mitch slapped" lol They do xmas gospel, pop, hip-hop, rap, techno lots of variety to choose from can't wait.
Mitch (counter tenor, highest voice range), Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty mezzo soprano) and Scott (baritone and bass when the bass has a lead) have been together since about 10 years old. Kirstie and Mitch are chameleons and constantly chasing their looks. They are so great at singing together and not stepping on each other's vocals. Kevin the beatboxer and cellist also played in Carnegie Hall twice before 14, he also plays the saxophone and speaks fluent Mandarin. Avi the bass while no longer in the group, it was nothing wrong, he wanted to go solo but they got Matt Salle who had a voice like liquid silk and was a great addition to the group
Can't wait for you to react to their cover of The Prayer. It's always so refreshing to find reactors that are educated in music and immediately identify each of their skills and talents because you know they're going to enjoy a PTX video.
We “Pentaholics” consider their covers to be upgrades. 😉 On top of 5 of the most diverse and talented vocals, their arrangements are always amazing. There’s a vid floating around called A Beginners Guide to Pentatonix. Congratulations on your FIRST Mitch-slap. 🤙🏻
The reach out and grab you effect is called dynamics. PTX are the kings and queen of dynamics, among...like a thousand other things. These guys are not human. You're only about 10 years late to the party. They are a rabbit hole of epic proportions. I wouldn't even be able to tell you where to go next. EVERYTHING they do is gold.
You ain’t heard nuthin yet! Great reaction, it’s nice to hear someone who picks up on the technical gems in their arrangement. Congrats on your son’s book being published, that’s exciting! You’ll probably enjoy amazing grace, Mary did you know, the sound of silence. And bohemian rhapsody.
There's a live version of Pentatonix Hallelujah. The live version really showcases their raw talent. Definitely react to "Mary Did You Know". These 5 are amazing! The beat boxer Kevin also is a classically trained cellist. Mitch, Kirsten and Scott have known each other since they were kids. They met Avi, their bass, through a friend and they found Kevin on youtube. Avi has since left the group on great terms and help find his replacement Matt. Matt is also an amazing singer. ❤
You've only marred the surface of Pentatonix! They've won 3 Grammy Awards! And they have some new killer Christmas videos to go with their other 8 years of Christmas videos! I will greatly enjoy joining you on your journey down the PTX rabbit hole 🕳! Enjoy! 💖
So many incredible performances of theirs are must-sees… The Sound of Silence, the Daft Punk Medley (won one of their three Grammies), the Evolution of Michael Jackson, Bohemian Rhapsody, Mad World, ‘90s Dance Medley, Imagine… all fantastic.
Pentatonix and Home Free were both on the show, The Sing Off. Pentatonix won season 3 and Home Free won season 4. It is always amazing to see where they started and how much they have improved to get to where they are right now.
Love that you finally got around to Pentatonix! You gotta check out their cover of Sound of Silence, Daft Punk medley, 90's Dance medley for starters 🎶 🎵🔥❤🤘
💕💕💕 ***************SOMETIMES, THERE IS JUST NO WORDS GOOD ENOUGH*************** 💕💕💕 Really loved your raw & emotional reaction! Never get tired of the *MITCH SLAP* 😊
Welcome to it Van…SO much amazing music from them… they really shine in “the dance of the sugarplum fairy” where there are no words, and there’s a collaboration with Jennifer Hudson where they sing “how great thou art” it’s amazingly beautiful ❤️✨💚hope you get the chance to check it out
Pentatonix, Homefree and VoicePlay. They are (in my opinion) the perfect trifecta of the A Capella world. And they often have crossovers. I look forward to any reactions you do to any of these groups.
I always love when this is a reactor's first listen to Pentatonix!! It never fails that they are "mitch-slapped" at the same spot. I love Home Free too, but I think I have to say that I love Pentatonix slightly more. You should do Home Free's "Ring of Fire", because Ari (the bass for Pentatonix) joins them for the song.
Home Free and Pentatonix, best acapella bands out there. But, aside from all that, your son wrote a book!!! As a parent myself, how thrilling, how exciting that must be! Congratulations to your son. I will have to check out your son's book. Such an accomplishment! You did good "dad"! Raising kids is not easy, there's no handbook, but you did it wonderfully. You must be so proud. I know I would be! My boy's are in their early teens, so they haven't found their niche yet, but I can only pray they follow down the good road your son has. In the meantime, keep on giving us the Home Free/Pentatonix reactions. I promise you, no song will disappoint!
If you are enjoying acapella I would also suggest VoicePlay-Hoist the Colours and Voctave-Disney Princess Medley. And for more Pentatonix-Can You Feel the Love Tonight.
Imagine, dance of the sugarplum fairy,Daft punk medley, can't stop us,love again are some of my all time favs.just a drop in the bucket to start you off...man Van I've suggested this group to you before & have been waiting for you to start your PTX journey. Welcome and enjoy!! Also,Home Free is AMAZING as well, and I might recommend Voiceplay, and the Bass Gang, and for solo acts from these groups I suggest Tim Foust & Austin from Home Free, and Geoff Castellucci from Voiceplay, and Superfruit (a duo of Scott & Mitch) from Pentatonix ( or PTX for short).😁 Have fun with all these fantastic people!!!😄✌
You described it perfectly, the crescendos... well done. Also, great Mitch-face! Last but definitely not least, congratulations to an Jr on publication of his book - yay! I know how challenging that can be! Will check it out...
Started in high school Pentatonix comes from pretty humble beginnings. It all began when three childhood friends from Arlington, Texas - Scott Hoying, Kirstin Maldonado, and Mitch Grassi - began creating a capella trios together.
It is to do. You cannot help but smile when you're watching them, because they are so amazing, and so touching to the heart. And then to watch you turn your son onto it. You try to sell it to him, like I try to sell it to people I know. Then you watch them when they listen, and you know you've shared something special 🥰
This is their original lineup. The 3 in the middle all went to the same high school together. 4 other great videos with this lineup - Bohemian rhapsody, daft punk, Mary did you know, little drummer boy. The guy with the beard has since left the group, 2 great videos with his replacement; sound of silence and amazing grace.
PTX, Home Free, Voice Play and Voctave are all amazing acapella groups. All have their fans and a lot of cross over fans. I started with PTX because they had TV specials and New about them that way. But from comments from others listening to them on UA-cam I found Home Free which has become my favorite of the acapella groups.
I have found much comfort in this song these last 2 years. Being on disability with a very compromising autoimmune disease has left me a little depressed at times. This song lifts me up in so many ways.
The fact that there in the middle wanted to compete on a show and we’re told they needed two more people to be an A cappella group. Then to find avi and Kevin with in days of the show is amazing. Then to go on and win it is mad insane.
PTX is indeed one of the premiere a cappella groups around today. I’m glad to hear you react to them and this is a great song. As far as pop a cappella, they are definitely the best currently. Home Free is also a great group and has brought a cappella to country. However, a group with tons of talent that sings a lot of traditional a cappella, as well as some twists on more contemporary music is a group out of Orlando, FL, called Voctave. They are all professional musicians, with several having Master’s Degrees in Music and Singing. All of their arrangements are original and they pride themselves in not using autotune. They sing a lot of Christmas, Disney, Broadway, & Christian styles of music. All of them have worked or currently work as a singer at Disney World with either the Voices of Liberty, an a cappella Americana group that sings at the American Pavilion in EPCOT, or with the Dapper Dans, a barbershop quartet on Mainstreet in Magic Kingdom. They have more than 5 members so they can get a richer sound and present a full wall of sound musically. Quite often you don’t realize you are listening only to voices with them, but you are. Kirsten from PTX has been a guest soloists on a couple of their songs as have many other notable artists like Sandi Patti, Mark Lowry, Rachel Potter and many others. One of their truly unique numbers is The Great Movie medley (ua-cam.com/video/PVKa1LEFPas/v-deo.html) where they literally sound like a vocal orchestra. Probably their most popular song is the Disney Love Medley featuring Kirsten Maldonado & her then fiancé, Jeremy Michael Lewis (ua-cam.com/video/aBCukAJwKN0/v-deo.html) or the Disney Princess Medley (ua-cam.com/video/aBCukAJwKN0/v-deo.html), and one of their most technically proficient numbers is The Prince of Egypt Medley (ua-cam.com/video/2iyWMt1Me0Y/v-deo.html), but I defy you to watch their version of Where Are You Christmas? (ua-cam.com/video/fl9L52HFjeo/v-deo.html) and not cry. They have some of the highest sopranos in the industry down to some of the lowest bases and they are strong on all parts in between too. Generally they sing with 5 women & 6 men but the number has changed off and on over time as the group morphed into what it is today. So please check them out and give us a reaction. You really can’t go wrong with any of their numbers.
Kirsty - mezzo-soprano, Scott (blonde guy - bass-baritone-tenor), and Mitch (round hat guy (tenor-countertenor) went to high school together in Arlington Texas. Avi (bass-baritone-tenor) and Kevin (cello-beatboxer-tenor) joined them the day before they competed (and won) the 3rd season of The Sing-off in 2011. The Pentatonix rabbit hole is deep and wide-spread. We fans (known as Pentaholics) are a decent group who loves to see others fall in love with these young people's unequaled talent. Be well and enjoy, Duke
Pentatonix is by far the best selling Acapella group ever. It is hard to believe you missed them. Just this year they were part of the Capital Fourth, the Kennedy Center honors for Dick Van Dyke and will be part of the special at the White House on Christmas. They have three Grammys and have been on multiple award shows. If you like Acapella you should definitely react to their Evolution videos.

Two words. Amazing Grace. It will blow your mind.
Cant get enough of everyones reaction to the Mitch Slap (guy with the rim hat) 😂😂
If no one else said it "You got Mitch slapped" lol
They do xmas gospel, pop, hip-hop, rap, techno lots of variety to choose from can't wait.
This is one of my favorite groups. You need to check out their Christmas albums!! Incredible!
Keep the Home Free and Pentatonix battle going! We won't have a loser.
Small piece of heaven on earth . They made my spirit jump . Gifted of God.
Yep, you've been Mitch slapped!!😂😂😂
I love watching another Mitch slap. I would love to see your reaction of their cover of The Prayer.
sound of silence by them is amazing...
Don't forget the evolution of Michael Jackson by Pentatonix is really awesome too. Great reaction as always!
Beautiful ♥️.
This is one of the best songs ever written IMHO! Great reaction! Much love from Canada.
You've only marred the surface of Pentatonix! They've won 3 Grammy Awards! And they have some new killer Christmas videos to go with their other 8 years of Christmas videos! I will greatly enjoy joining you on your journey down the PTX rabbit hole 🕳! Enjoy! 💖
I love me some Home Free. But the pound for pound acapella champ is Pentatonix. They are bleeping amazing!! Peace from Texas, my friend!
You ain't seen nothing yet... you've missed out. BIG time... Time to catch up with their awesomeness!
They are sent from heaven. Best Acapella band on Earth!
First time to the channel, I saw you were reacting to Pentatonix! Enjoyed your reaction, and keep that Pentatonix train rolling!!
Welcome to the Awesomeness of Pentatonix. You're in for a hell of a ride.
SUBSCRIBING BECAUSE YOU HAVE JUST DISCOVERED GOLD, NOT EVEN GOLD BUT ❤️❤️❤️ PENTATONIX
Bohemian Rhapsody 🔥sound of silence and amazing grace are popular PTX covers
Home free is an amazing vocal acapella group as you said. Pentatonix is also Amazing as well, both groups so much God given vocal talent.
Pentatonix is the best singing group EVER! They have well over 200 videos for you to check out!
Welcome to it Van…SO much amazing music from them… they really shine in “the dance of the sugarplum fairy” where there are no words, and there’s a collaboration with Jennifer Hudson where they sing “how great thou art” it’s amazingly beautiful ❤️✨💚hope you get the chance to check it out
My first time hearing/watching this....and damn!!!!! They send it out, they take it back and then they bring it home!!!!
Pentatonix, Homefree and VoicePlay. They are (in my opinion) the perfect trifecta of the A Capella world. And they often have crossovers. I look forward to any reactions you do to any of these groups.
That look on your face at 5:41 that's what the Pentatonix fans call getting "Mitch slapped" lol The guy has amazing range, power and tone
And of course your reaction to the lad in the big hat was perfect. I knew you’d go ballistic when you heard him ❤️
Home Free and Pentatonix, best acapella bands out there.
It's like the heavens opened up and God sang. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!
Simply heavenly!!
They're very good, try " the prayer " next, mind blowing new release. Congrats to your son 👏 💙
Imagine, dance of the sugarplum fairy,Daft punk medley, can't stop us,love again are some of my all time favs.just a drop in the bucket to start you off...man Van I've suggested this group to you before & have been waiting for you to start your PTX journey. Welcome and enjoy!! Also,Home Free is AMAZING as well, and I might recommend Voiceplay, and the Bass Gang, and for solo acts from these groups I suggest Tim Foust & Austin from Home Free, and Geoff Castellucci from Voiceplay, and Superfruit (a duo of Scott & Mitch) from Pentatonix ( or PTX for short).😁
Have fun with all these fantastic people!!!😄✌
You described it perfectly, the crescendos... well done. Also, great Mitch-face! Last but definitely not least, congratulations to an Jr on publication of his book - yay! I know how challenging that can be! Will check it out...
These gentlemen and lady are PHENOMENAL.
Thank You! He worked extremely hard for this, this means a lot to all of us.
They are the best ever !!
Started in high school
Pentatonix comes from pretty humble beginnings. It all began when three childhood friends from Arlington, Texas - Scott Hoying, Kirstin Maldonado, and Mitch Grassi - began creating a capella trios together.
Yep...can't even with them. That is pure talent and acapella at its finest!
Kevin Olusolo, the beatboxer, sings tenor and plays the cello as well.
I literally just smiled the whole time watching your reactions, so cool. You can hear some amazing things, keep it up👌
It is to do.
Pure music that's how it should be
PTX, Home Free, Voice Play and Voctave are all amazing acapella groups.
It's called being..Mitch slapped. Lol. Great reaction
I cry at the end of this video or the live one. The end of this song makes me feel love so much!!
The fact that there in the middle wanted to compete on a show and we’re told they needed two more people to be an A cappella group. Then to find avi and Kevin with in days of the show is amazing. Then to go on and win it is mad insane.
Mitch slapped!!! 😆
Your going to want to hear a lot of there stuff. Especially Mary Did You Know.
Mary did you know is one of my favs they cover! Absolutely beautiful!
@@rebeccadowds844 Best version of it ever.
I'm a total Home Fry but I can not deny the talent that PTX has.
Close to perfection and not an instrument in sight. thank you # van
About time!!! Heck yeah Van keep the Pentatonix coming! They’re the best 🔥
Mitch is insane! He’s tone sounds like a angel❤❤
they are phenominal! INSANE good talent.
You want Perfection from Pentatonix then try Mary did you know or Amazing grace!! ♥️♥️
can not go wrong with any pentatonix or home free song
If you like Acapella you should definitely react to their Evolution videos.
watching u listen to Pentatonix feels like i'm watching it all over again for the first time. thank you for this 🙏
