It's impossible for me to think of Howard Keel without thinking of "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" and "Calamity Jane." Great actor! Great singer! Class act!

We saw him in concert on this tour and he was fantastic. Something I'll remember as long as I live. He also sat outside and signed every autograph for a huge queue of people and didn't leave 'tll he'd finished. The guy was a legend. Sadly missed. Why do people have to mock? Pathetic.

(spoken:) I was a-walking down the street the other day And a fellow looked up at me, and he said:
Hey mister, hey mister, I just want a dime 'cause I need a cop of coffee and a moment of your time
I can see you're raising hell the way I used to do
But I wish someone had a-talked to me like I wanna talk to you.
Oh, I've been to Georgia, and California, any place I could run
Stole a women in Tennessee, and we made love in the sun
But I ran out of places with friendly faces, because I had to be free
I've been to paradise, but I've never been to me.
(spoken:) Thank you, mister, thank you kindly,
Hey, hey, Please, please don't walk away 'cause I have this need to tell you why I'm all alone today
I can see so much of me still living in your eyes
Won't you share a part of an old man's heart on the day before he dies?
Oh, I've been to China and Asia Minor on any ship that could sail
Made some noise with some good old boys, and we wrecked the county jail
I've seen the best men fall and some teardrops fall,
    there ain't nothing that I haven't seen
I've been to paradise, but I've never been to me.
I've even been to marriage, and children crying for someone they couldn't find
There ain't nowhere that I went searching for things I left behind
I thought my heart would break when I learned too late, only love can set people free

@@nhlanhlanene4847 Nhlanhla - thanks for the info. I did not know the Temps had their own version, with what may be their own lyrics. Spent some time listening to it several times today. So soulful, very moving. With the right and varied voice(s) this song is a story worth listening to every time. And I know the song itself had a journey prior to Charlene's original version via Motown. Another soul track (whole album really) which always moves me and may be one of the very greatest ever recordings is Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?". I'll never forget the first time I heard that, never forgotten. (New York City). Thanks again.

On this day in 1977 {September 24th} Charlene's "I've Never Been To Me" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart for a three week stay, peaking at #97...
Five years later in 1982 it re-entered the Top 100; and this time it reached #3 and spent 20 weeks on the Top 100...
    It reached #1 in Australia {for 6 weeks}, in Canada {for 4 weeks}, and in the United Kingdom {for 1 week}...
It was originally recorded by Broadway musical star Howard Keel...

@drbuzzmann I don't mean insult, but your posting is made out of ignorance. The ignorance is understandable, as scant few people know the "history" of this tune. The song was originally penned for a man to sing. The song lyrics were rewritten by Ron Miller for a woman to sing when he recognized that Charlene would be the ultimate performer for a song with such a theme.

So much misinformation in these comments. The first person to release this song was a woman, Randy Crawford. Howard Keel was not the only person to record the male version of the lyrics, but he's probably the most famous, and he recorded it probably 7 years after Charlene. Charlene was the only artist to chart with the song.

  • @Shivadur

Well, the song was written by Ron Miller, and then the lyrice were rewrote to fit a female point of view. Charlene was a new signing for motown at that time and the recordcompany wanted a hit material song written for her and Miller choose this song. The song in it`s original format has not been released on motown sofar and probably never will.

Ángel Miguel Ramírez Gómez But Charlene's version wasn't a hit - until it was re-rleased. For some reason, radio stations balked at the spoken word part of Charlene's original version and stopped playing it before the song really took off.
A couple of years later, Mary McGregor recorded a tremendous version which was the follow up to Torn Between Two Lovers. It was also minus the spoken word.
