It's impossible for me to think of Howard Keel without thinking of "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" and "Calamity Jane." Great actor! Great singer! Class act!
We saw him in concert on this tour and he was fantastic. Something I'll remember as long as I live. He also sat outside and signed every autograph for a huge queue of people and didn't leave 'tll he'd finished. The guy was a legend. Sadly missed. Why do people have to mock? Pathetic.
Now learnt there are two versions of this song, female and the male, but I am ever so glad Howard Keel's was the first version I ever ran into back in those sunny days of the eighties when the world seemed right.
I love this man’s presence and of course his spectacular voice. He somehow gives me strength and confidence. Then l must add if we take the lyrics seriously maybe we will get to know ourselves better.

@@nhlanhlanene4847 Nhlanhla - thanks for the info. I did not know the Temps had their own version, with what may be their own lyrics. Spent some time listening to it several times today. So soulful, very moving. With the right and varied voice(s) this song is a story worth listening to every time. For some reason I picture the female version being two sisters where the formerly wild one talking to the steady settled one. The male version makes me think of a wayward father to his now adult son whom he is afraid is following the same path.
On this day in 1977 {September 24th} Charlene's "I've Never Been To Me" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart for a three week stay, peaking at #97... Five years later in 1982 it re-entered the Top 100; and this time it reached #3 and spent 20 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #1 in Australia {for 6 weeks}, in Canada {for 4 weeks}, and in the United Kingdom {for 1 week}... It was originally recorded by Broadway musical star Howard Keel...
He didn't start recording until 1984, so no, it wasn't originally recorded by him. It was originally done by Randy Crawford and then Mary McGregor before Charlene did her version.
RANDY CRAWFORD RECORDED THIS SONG FOR HER DEBUT ALBUM IN 1976 (NOT RELEASED AS A SINGLE) 6 WEEKS AFTER CHARLENE DUNCAN RECORDED IT BUT DIDN'T RELEASE IT AS A SINGLE UNTIL 1977. CHARLENE ACTUALLY RECORDED IT FIRST. ALSO THE SONG WAS WRITTEN BY K. HIRSCH AND RON MILLER FOR A FEMALE VERSION, AFTER RON MILLER WROTE THIS ORIGINAL VERSION FOR A MALE PERSPECTIVE.
Actually...the male lyrics were the original ones. The writer changed them to fit a female perspective when they needed a song quickly for Charlene to sing. :3
@drbuzzmann I don't mean insult, but your posting is made out of ignorance. The ignorance is understandable, as scant few people know the "history" of this tune. The song was originally penned for a man to sing. The song lyrics were rewritten by Ron Miller for a woman to sing when he recognized that Charlene would be the ultimate performer for a song with such a theme.
So much misinformation in these comments. The first person to release this song was a woman, Randy Crawford. Howard Keel was not the only person to record the male version of the lyrics, but he's probably the most famous, and he recorded it probably 7 years after Charlene. Charlene was the only artist to chart with the song.
My mistake... it's not the Generation game, Brucie (and Howard for that matter ) is wearing the wrong syrup for it to be that early... MY guess is that it is some sort of pilot episode of Play your cards right..." Now, Give us twirl Anthea my love"
I don't remember that episode of The generation game.... I wonder how the contestants got on with singing that and how many points did Howard give them....... "Alright my love"
It is very true. The original lyrics were written from a male perspective, presumedly for a man to record. Ron Miller rewrote the lyrics for a woman, and the rest is history. I have never known of the original (male) version to have ever been recorded for popular release.
One of my colleagues tends to liken information on Wikipedia to a public toilet--"it may be perfectly fine...but you never really know, do you?" However, I bought the sheet music for the song when it was re-released in 1982, and the male lyrics were included.
Well, the song was written by Ron Miller, and then the lyrice were rewrote to fit a female point of view. Charlene was a new signing for motown at that time and the recordcompany wanted a hit material song written for her and Miller choose this song. The song in it`s original format has not been released on motown sofar and probably never will. And why ask patrick for proof, either you study musical histroy or you use google, bot gives you the answer
This is ... bizarre. But imagine how strange it would be if the lyrics were the same as they used in Charlene Duncan's version. Took the hand of a preacher man and you made love in the sun? Moved like Harlow in Monte Carlo in showed them what you've got? Being undressed by kings?
Well, I'd say that is the point here. It's not the same at all when you look at it from a male point of view. The Temptations did a version of the song on their 1983 reunion album. They dedicated it to their sons. As a man with a couple of good ol' boy sons, I can see exactly what they were singing about.
Er, I hate to have to be the one to tell this to you, but no, that turns out not to be the case. Some good female versions have been made. Nancy Wilson's stands out among them. But Charlene's version was nothing more than emotional manipulation with no substance.
Not by a long chalk, no it isn't. Matter of personal opinion, I agree but just think of the images evoked in this Howard Keel's rendition....unparalleled if you ask me and unmatched by the female version.
AzNightmare As one of the other commenters noted, these are the original lyrics which were changed to a female perspective later on. I think he sang it well too for a man of his age. :)
An absolute disaster of one of the worlds all time worst songs. Bruce whatshisname's involvement is just the icing on the cake. This may never be topped, even by William Hung.
Ángel Miguel Ramírez Gómez But Charlene's version wasn't a hit - until it was re-rleased. For some reason, radio stations balked at the spoken word part of Charlene's original version and stopped playing it before the song really took off. A couple of years later, Mary McGregor recorded a tremendous version which was the follow up to Torn Between Two Lovers. It was also minus the spoken word. After Mary McGregors version ran it's course, Charlene's version was recut without the spoken word and it became a hit again. Both Charlene and Mary McGregor possessed beautiful voices and should've more his that what they both had.

I don't like to compare one version to another. But let's just say, this is in the top, and the song begs for a mature bass-baritone such as his.
